Any Updates On QE2?

Sun May 15, 2011 8:50 am

Any updates on QE2? I believe it is still in Dubai right? Will she ever be back in service sailing for Cunard or another cruise company?

I got to see Her Majesty of the Seas fairly recently while on a trip to Dubai. I had all the time to admire her. She is such a sad sight. A useless decorating item in Dubai harbour.

You can easily see her at take-off if you sit on the left side of the aircraft looking down at the harbour.

I doubt she will ever go back in service but she may very well cross the Atlantic once more and go back to the U.K.

Nothing is impossible. All that time she has been in Dubai she has been sititng at Port Rashid being moved about from one pier to the other a couple of times, repainted and been taken good care of. Other than that, nothing.

This has recent footage done on board the Ship.

QE2 enthusiast Rob Lightbody has filmed inside the former Cunard liner which has been moored at a dockside in Dubai since leaving its former home port of Southampton.

Wonder if she is still in service with Cunard if the Dubai government didn't buy it.

Any old ships left for us to cruise on? Saga Ruby?

She was too expensive to run, not enough room on board, she was old, didn't handle well and was basically past her use by date, Cunard couldn't wait to get rid of her. if Dubai hadn't bought her she should have gone to the breakers, nothing sadder than a magnificent ship tied up to a wharf, I'd like to see Queen Mary go there as well, what they have done to her in Long Beach is a travesty.

Wonder if QE2 can be used on other cruises

I believe the adminstrators have the right to overturn the ban on QE2 picking up passengers on cruises. Maybe another cruise company can takeover? Norwegian?

The necessary upgrades to fulfill new safety standards do prevent it.

No, retirement and replacement was a longstanding plan. As a liner she´s replaced by QM2, as a cruisehip by QV and QE.

Southampton would be the right place for her but I doubt the city could pay the running costs.

I´ll be aboard QM2 in a few weeks time (balcony cabin) and wonder how she´ll compare to the good old QE2.

Last I heard was there is not much maintenace being done to keep QM in the condition she deserves. Otherwise I must say that Long Beach must be honoured to keep her for so long, and in a condition largely true to her grand career. I hope she´ll remain afloat for a long time to come. As the sole survivor of a grand era of travel she should be protected by the government and be entitled to public funds to keep her as a museum. Her part in winning WWI is to be valued higher than any individual USN warship which is being cared for.

Part of the terms of sales was that she couldn't be used as a passanger vessel.

Nobody would use her as a cruise ship because she's too old, too expensive to run, her layout isn't suited to modern cruising, not enough balcony cabins, she isn't able to berth without assistance, (all modern cruise ships can berth without tugs), in todays world she is a lenon, she'll never ever see revenue service again, and she's full of asbestos.

Maybe it can be used as something similar to SS Norway

Wonder if the administrator can overturn that decision

It can be tied up to a dock and used as a floating hotel/convention centre/museum, it just can't be used as a passanger vessel.

I've been told that meeting the latest SOLAS requirements wouldn't be a problem.

She can still sail but she won't, they do keep her in a seaworthy state, however there will come a day in the not to distant future (my opinion) where it won't be worth spending the money on upkeep and she will end up like the SS United States, both ships should go to the breakers, let them live on in peoples memories not like this. It's like keeping someone in a vegitative state on life support because you want them to live, rather than doing what's best and letting them pass away.

I disagree with the scrappimg suggestion, at least as long as so many WWII warships built in series are kept in series. The SS United States has no chance other than a billionaire spending the odd 100 - 200 millions to bring her to a condition at least reminding its (short) glorious past, so I think its about time to send her to the breakers now that in decades no such enthusiast could be found. But I think QE2 deserves to be preserved more than, lets say, the USS North Carolina, one of the numerous WWII battleships, or HMS Belfast.

What's up with SS United States? NCL was planning to reinstate it but they didn't.

Do you not understand or comprehend anything written, she will never be put into passanger service again, she will end her days as a floating hotel or convention centre or go to the breakers, that is her future, she will never carry passangers at sea again.

Cunard don't want her, if they did she wouldn't have been sold, they have bigger, better and far cheaper vessels to operate today.

Still active. The ship is currently joined by 1981-built Saga Sapphire, which under its original name "Europa" was once among the world´s best cruiseships.

Here is the fitting written report:

Report of the first visit granted onboard QE2 since she was moored at Dubai. Good to read the ship is in "simply tremendous condition".

Pretty sure I've answered this before somewhere, but nevertheless in addition to the suggestions above, Marco Polo is still sailing.

Apparently being scrapped in China.

"The latest and most stringent SOLAS amendments thus far forced two of the last classics, the 1966-built MONA LISA (ex KUNGSHOLM) and the 1960-built KRISTINA REGINA, from active service and landed the retired 1966-built BLUE MONARCH (ex RENAISSANCE), 1964-built SAGA ROSE (ex SAGAFJORD) and 1957-built IVORY (ex AUSONIA) in the sledgehammer-wielding arms of shipbreakers."
"...while SAGA ROSE made a half circumnavigation of the world from Gibraltar around Africa, past Singapore and up to an anchorage off Shanghai, where she eventually proceeded to a berth in the industrial town of Jiangyin, known for its steel and scrap industry. It appears this will be where she meets her end. "

I suggest you check that site, which is one of the best on the net, for further questions regarding the fate of old cruiseships. Or even wikipedia.
