Genting, Malaysia...ever Been There?

Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:37 am

My daughter was watching a television show that had a segment about Genting which is evidently a big tourist draw in Malaysia. Anyone ever been there? Is it worth the trip of is it as cheesy as it looks? Thanks in advance.

Yes I have been there.

Depends on what you're looking for or expecting to find. The place is more or less a low-cost, less "classy" version of Las Vegas or Macau. If you're only interested in gambling, like very crowded places, and willing to travel the distance, it's the place to be.
Needless to say that it all comes with much lower price tags.

All I can remember from when I went there was that it was cold, windy, foggy and packed. I won't be heading back there in a hurry.

That's correct. The place is 1800 m above see level, so you're literally with your head in the clouds. Temperatures vary from 15 to 24 degrees Celsius which is considerably lower than typical tropical temperatures. Humidity is lower as well. A feeling similar to the Bay area in California in October.

I went there with 3 other families (all cousins) from different parts of India, and we met at Genting (and further to Kota Kinabalu). We all have kids 6-8 years old, and had an absolute blast. Nice rides at the indoor/ outdoor amusement parks which completely empty (as we were there on weekdays during off season), great food (Malay food is splendid anywhere), superb (though old) hotel (I don't remember the name, but we had massive rooms with 2 double beds each). Nights were spent consuming vast amounts of duty free tipple (picked up at KUL airport or as leaving from India) and catching up with cousins. Days were spent on the rides and keeping the kids occupied.

Kota Kinabalu was much better though - just gorgeous and kind of "untouched". Genting looks and feels rather old/ dated.

This was from January 2011, so fairly recent...

It's very cheap and thus very crappy. You can go there by coach from KL or Singapore. The casino is the only thing open 24 hours a day (I didn't go in as I don't gamble) and the theme park, if you can call it that, is a joke. The hotel is at best a 2 star hotel.

You're better off going to Resorts World Sentos, in Singapore, which is owned by Genting, and at least there is a Universal Studios, albeit a very small one, or to the MB Sands.

Cheers

Thanks much. You've all given us a good idea of what to expect, and we appreciate that. Especially the alternative sites you mentioned. Maybe we'll got to all three!
