Anybody On LinkedIn?

Sun Jun 19, 2011 7:44 pm

Just curious if anybody here is on LinkedIn? Do you find it useful? Thanks.

LinkedIn is for Americans and Canadians where networking is the national sport yet no one there is any good at it.

I have been on it for a year or so but don't use or update it very actively. I got a very good job offer recently that was initiated through linkedin so I guess it's been good in that respect, (although I didn't take the job)

I have never used it for networking, although I observe that some others are very active on it

KiwinOz,

So did you find it worthwhile in Australia?

LOL

I use it - simply to keep track of coworkers I have met and all that jazz. It is also slowly but surely starting to replace the standard "references" some employers ask for - they will check your LinkedIn page and read the "recommendations" there first. If you have none, they'll ask for references.

It's also good to see who you know in an industry. For massive industries that doesn't help much (unless you know the CFO/CEO/Controller or something else of a large enterprise and are 'connected' to them), but for smaller ones, like the field I'm in, it can be very valuable.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

I was somewhat active on LinkedIn, but I'm having a tough time building my network. I'm into urban/regional planning and GIS, but I really do not know that many people in that field. It sucks, because I am currently a caregiver for the elderly, and I REALLY want to get away from that!

I'm going to be 30 in two years, and I would like to have a career initiated by then...

It's very popular in the UK, especially in the IT/Telecoms sector. Very handy for keeping in touch with colleagues, and the groups are handy to keep an eye out for job opportunities and the like.

I've been on it for years but never used it... just had an account. I logged into it yesterday funnily enough primarily because I felt I needed to get my contacts sorted as like noelg says above, it is handy and somewhat becoming essential (ALTF4) for references etc.

I'm in the contracting business and some of the agencies I've spoken to ask if I'm on LinkedIn... it's easier for them to check and take it from there rather than chase for references... I'm not a fan of LinkedIn but then I don't use it, but I will now.

I just recently started it. I have built up some connections and joined some groups. Interesting discussions happening on some of them, along with some interesting job postings. I just have not had the time to REALLY dive into it and see what it is all about. Maybe when I take some time off this summer I'll spend some time on it.

The job offer I got was from Sydney so yes. The Aussies seem pretty active on it, more than half of my connections would be from there

I've been on it for 3+ years. I've had a few job interviews from positions I saw posted on LinkedIn, it's a good way to keep up to date with former colleagues, and I've connected with former coworkers who have put me in touch with people at companies I'm interested in working at. I've also helped connect people with former coworkers fin similar situations. It's not a Silver Bullet for getting a new job, but it is definitely a worthwhile tool.

Can't you do that on Facebook anyways? I am on Facebook and have the Education and Work section filled out just like on LinkedIn. Already had employers check me out prior to getting accepted. Even read an article about this a while ago. Funny in a way as I don't consider Facebook to be very "serious". Nevertheless, one must always watch out what one does and does not share on there, and with whom one shares it with

Yes, I've been sent a couple of "invitations" to apply for jobs from it. And yes, I work in IT

LinkedIn is for professional networking only. Normally you would not want your professional contacts to be on your facebook friend's list and get spammed with updated about every single thing that you said or did online, or have them see you tagged in that picture that your friends took at a frat party.

I don't know about the other industries but for IT, LinkedIn is invaluable. I have been on LinkedIn for the last 5 years and the contacts I have made would not have been possible with out it. I have lost count of the number of very serious job offers I keep receiving from my network. Some of them are with the biggest names in the industry.
Bring back the old site.

Oh don't get me wrong please... a lot of my facebook content is NOT visible to my colleagues. That would be unprofessional. I try to separate private from business as good as I can

I contract. I have a rule that I only add colleagues AFTER I complete the contract. Certainly that's how it has been...

I'm kicking myself now though because while I don't mind them being on my FB, I would have much rather kept them on LinkedIn had I used that option... I like to keep a seperate private and business life. Saying that, Facebook works.

A lot of people seem to be having success related to IT but IT is one of those industries that it's easy to be successful at. I don't see how linkedIn could improve make it any better.
