Prius Performance Pack!

Fri Jul 01, 2011 4:34 am

Amateur racers beware! Toyota's performance arm,TRD, is introducing a performance pack for the Prius which even includes a real anti-sway bar. At track days and autocrosses, this upgrade is expected to give Prius jocks a slightly larger knife at the gunfight.

Now the only question is when we will get the not so eagerly awaited Volt SS.

Only if it upgrades the cars software to keep it in the right lane when it is at the posted speed limit or below. If I had a dollar for every time I got stuck behind some do-gooder on the insterstate pulling 5-10 under the limit int he far left lane, I'd not have to work again.

Isn't a Prius 'performance pack' a little contradictory? They're supposed to be about efficiency, not performance! Having test driven one for 4 days, they don't live up to the quote on page 8 of their brochure; "exhilarating performance with world-class efficiency". The performance was nothing special and the efficiancy, at 55mpg was certainly not world-class. I went on to test drive a much large saloon car for 5 days immediately after the Prius and averaged 10mpg more than the Prius! It's all hype

Yes - it's a complete oxymoron. Apart from anything else it is not fit for purpose (it is not a performance car) . Anyone wanting a performance hybrid is just wasting their time with a Prius. The fact is that the tyres are designed to be narrow and have no grip/ less rolling resistance to supposedly boost fuel economy (as opposed to reduce cost) rather than increase grip as a performance tyre would do..

Putting performance bits and pieces on a Prius is like dressing a man up as a woman and calling them a supermodel. It doesn't matter what you do they'll still be a dude in a skirt. They shouldn't even bother, and focus on designing proper performance hybrids rather than a poor imitation.

No because that 'supermodel' at least has balls. This Prius doesn't.

Exactly!

Have the eco-freaks abandoned their slogan; "Speed kills"?
Ok I'm dating myself with that one.

Are they trying to fool gear-heads? Are they trying to give the Prius macho appeal?

We won't. Maybe a Cruze SS or a Cruze Z24.... but probably not!

I've owned one since 04 and love it, but yea - this is just plain dumb. Marketing - you gotta love it!

Nope. It's all about driving habits. Put a leadfoot in a Prius and you'll get crap. Ooo wait, maybe this "performance package" will help!

Ehh -

The Prius IMO is more of a statement car than anything. I think the thing is absolutely hideous. I think this is pretty stupid. Nothing says I'm gonna kill you in a street race more than a Prius! lol.

I watched a short-lived TV show recently, called Breaking In, and one of the main characters, first seen driving his Hummer H2 like a maniac, swaps it for a Prius. When asked about it, he explains that he has removed all the "hybrid crap" and put a V8 in it !

The Prius is designed like an airliner: to do its mission as efficiently as possible.

Putting a "performance pack" on a Prius makes as much sense as putting an "Aerobatics Pack" on an A320-NEO.

Sounds like that scene from the "Horrible Bosses" movie trailer where Jason Bateman is being interrogated for stealing his boss's Prius-

COP: You wanna explain why you were speeding?
JASON: I was drag racing.
COP: ...in a Prius?
JASON: (pause) I don't win a lot.
