Computer/Power Source Strange Noise

Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:49 pm

So two weeks ago I noticed this whinning noise coming from the power strip of my computer. It is odd that my printer's adapter/power strip makes the same very high pitched noise also. Older people are not even able to hear this noise but at points with no background noise it is very annoying.

Any way about a week after noticing the nosie my computer failed to turn on so I figured the power source had a failure so I got a new one, a CORSAIR GS800, so a 800 watt source the same power amount I orignially had but a much better brand and quality at least I think.
The computer runs fine, without any problems. However when the system is shutdown I hear this lite crackling noise, it is hard to explain but it is there. It is an electricty type sound. When I turn the switch from on to off on the back of the computer the noise goes lower. However the noise only shuts off completely when the system is unplugged or the surge protector is turned off.
Any ideas? I heard I should try to unplug different components inside the system and see if the noise stops with one of them off and that could be the problem. However I am not comfortable with unplugging things inside my computer as I have no idea what I am doing with hardeware. If it is some type of componenet such as the video card (man I hope not!) does this need to be replaced? Or can it be something is out of line. I have already dusted the inside and all the vents.

Thanks for any info. It is just wierd that the orginal power source failed and now this brand new one is making a bit of a strange noise but not the same as the old one.

Good choice, Corsair is the rolls royce of power supplies.

My corsair 750 is dead silent. HOWEVER when I had it plugged into a UPS, the UPS itself would create a buzz at the wall outlet. I figured it was due to the very old and busted wiring in my house. The outlet wouldn't heat up or anything and it was extremely faint, so I didn't think much of it.

Is it similar to that static noise you hear on some old TVs or CRT monitors when turning them on or off?

Just try it. Do one component at a time and you can't mess it up. They're just plugs.

Without hearing the noises myself it's kind of hard to say for sure but honestly unless smoke starts bellowing from out of your case I wouldn't worry about it. I've never had a computer that didn't make some sort of noise one way or another.

Yes it sounds a bit like that. Right now when I have the computer off I just turn off the power to the surge protector. It seems that the less the computer is plugged in when off the softer the noise is. I had someone I know who is a computer wiz come in, he did not seem worried about the sound and could barley hear it.

Yea, the computer makes plenty of noises I just thought it was wierd it was making noises when turned off. I have noticed some other electrical things in my home making high frequency sounds etc.. When I am in my office on Monday I will see if my laptop power adapter makes the same sound as it does here at my home. If not then I think there might be something wrong with the electrcity in my home instead of the computer. The person who installed the PSU said the computer was built perfectly and in great shape so for now I am not going to worry about it. The Corsair has a 3 year warranty anyway.

I been looking in the case and I will probably will next weekend. Just do one at a time as you said.
