"Would You Hit It - Pink" Threads

Tue Jul 12, 2011 2:47 am

I've been wondering - why pink? Why not rainbow? It'd make more sense, wouldn't it?

Or am I missing something?

The colour pink has long been associated with gay culture. The Nazis, in fact, forced prisoners accused of homosexuality to wear a pink triangle, a symbol which is now often used to represent gay pride and gay rights.

There's also the rather crude stereotype of pink things being 'gay' (in the derogatory sense). E.g. straight men don't wear pink shirts, because that's 'gay'.

In other words, pink = gay (much to my chagrin).

Settle down, it's just a question. Not sure why my asking it bothers you so.

I admit to owning one pink business shirt. Well, it's a very muted sort of pink... but I still feel very self-conscious every time I wear it. As if I'm somehow telling everyone I'm gay by wearing it. I really need to toughen up, it's only a freakin' shirt.

Pink is also associated with 'girly', right? As opposed to 'manly'. Young girls usually love pink while boys wouldn't want to be caught dead in it.

I wonder why that came about and when it started..

It actually used to be the opposite. Pink for boys, blue for girls. This continued until the 1940s, and I'm afraid I don't know why it reversed.

Also, gays constantly have to identify themselves and use symbols and colors to do so. Pink triangle is just one of them. We can't walk in a restaurant and pick out who's gay and who isn't. That stereotype is so overplayed, that we can spot a gay from a mile away. Sure, some of them you can.

You don't need a blue thread, because you already have the "Would you hit it?" threads that are straight. When those threads came out, I posted a pic of a guy and was quickly told that I should start my own thread for gays. I didn't start the pink threads, but that's sort of how they got started. Straights wanted their own, so we started pink, with "Pink" being the identifier.

I believe the pink triangle has is origin in Nazi Germany. Like Jews were forced to sew yellow Star of David patches on their garments, homosexuals were required to sew a pink triangle on theirs as a way of identifying them.

I don't know why pink, either. I guess it is my generation, but I had heard lavender, not pink. The first time I hung out with other out gays, the "father" of the group would talk about "the Lavender Legion." The only thing even close to pink I own is a pair of Calvin Klein underwear with black and red pipping that has been bleached. I don't like wearing pink.

A little disclaimer would have been nice...when I saw pink I thought all the lovely ladies would be sporting pink lingerie...how wrong I was...

Even if I weren't gay, pink (at least some shades of it) looks great on me.

And who gives an eff what people think of you???
If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

I once heard a vicious rumour that there are actually women on here too, they might also appreciate looking at photos of blokes as well!! In which case, pink covers both gay male and straight female.

Pink is not my favourite colour either. I do own a pink Ralph Lauren shirt which I wear when I feel like it which is not very often - come to think of it, maybe tomorrow.

But if you are in Amsterdam - the erstwhile gay capital of Europe - for Canal Pride on the first Saturday in August, the city will be awash with pink. Guess what? It won't be gays who are wearing pink.

Pink has another identity to it in the states now with breast cancer awareness.
