Mark's pole lap .. not bad for a # 2... Lewis' dragged out something special for P2 as well

BBC commentary team alluded to Seb seeming not as comfortable or cheery as he had been earlier this year, certainly his body language getting out of the car and at the weigh-in seemed none too happy!

Quite happy to see Hammy in the middle of the two Red Bulls and starting in the front line.
Wil he be able to maintain this position during the race? That is the Big question.

I expected Sebastian Vettel in pole rather than Webber but things do change from one race and racing track to the other. I hope there will be rain tomorrow. Beautiful clouds during the BBC feed.

So it seems that we will have two races again. One in front and the other in the middle of the pack. Kamui is starting in 18th place. He knows all about overtaking so I am sure he will gain quite a few places.

Event of the day: Heikki Kovalainen taking a spin and driving against the traffic before getting back on track.

Completely missed that, TV screen is literally inches from me, heard Comm team talk about it but did not see it... must have been reading about the horrific events in Norway.

It's not the first time and it won't be the last time a driver has done that. It was off the track and he was turning around taking the long route to avoid driving through a gravel trap. It was hardly driving against the flow of traffic.

I just finished watching the replay of the qualifications. Congratualations to Mark, it's his second pole position in a row. Let's hope that he can turn that pole into a win tomorrow!

The four 1st drivers into 0.4 second, that should give us quite some drama for the race

Schumi is again blaming everyone but himself--

Quote:
Michael Schumacher said Mercedes failed to meet its expectations during qualifying for the German Grand Prix on Saturday.

Not sure all the blame can be laid on the silver cars..1.2 seconds behind his team mate, answering this--

Quote:
I was still nearly a second away and couldn't have matched his time, so we have to analyse deeply what could be the reason for it.

-- should be relatively easy!

BTW Michael it was over 1.2 seconds NOT "nearly a second"

From Joe Sawards F1 Blog...

Quote:
Mark Webber gave Red Bull Racing some food for thought by taking pole position for the German Grand Prix. After the team orders discussions post-Silverstone it was the Australian’s best answer to the Austrian contingent in the team. Team boss Christian Horner congratulated Webber on the radio but it sounded as though he was talking through gritted teeth – the sound quality no doubt being the problem.

Despite what I said a year or so ago, I think Christian Horner is a fine team manager, I even think he likes Mark Webber and would like to be supportive of him.
If Horner has a failing(sure he has more than one) it is that he fears the wrath of the Austro/German contingent and those that sign his cheques!
I think if CH had the courage of what I believe are his convictions, Mark would receive better treatment from the team.

Vettel certainly not comfortable in this race.

Track temps must be affecting lots of things.. remarkably it is only 1-2deg C warmer in high summer Germany than near midnight deep winter here in Sydney!!

The hero of the day if Adrian Sutil. What a good 6th place!
Kamui did a really great consistent race from starting in 17th place - no mistakes at any time!!!!
Schumi is his same good Schumi. He made some great moves... I hope he will stay!!!!

I hope Hammy will savour his win!!!

For once this race will be a no-Vettel win.

Not a boring moment!!

Brilliant race. Comes to show you that Hamilton is a fighter, and when Vettel isn't handed the race on a silver platter (pole) he can't fight for the race.

Also, wicked qualy lap from Lewis as well.

P.S. question - I thought if you don't make it around on your in lap - then you're disqualified? there's no fuel sample or weighing right?

Vettel had brake problems throughout the race, which adversely affected his pace.

Wow, what a great race - multiple leaders, front 3 or 4 never apart by much, lots of overtaking. Most enjoyable.

Very good drives by Hamilton & Alonso. Webber must be wondering how on Earth he went from 1st to 3rd in one pit stop.

He had brake problems for part of the race, but TBH, I don't think it made a huge difference. Lots of comments that he looked "off his game" all weekend.

Wow, what an interesting race. Lewis showed all the nay-sayers... ;P Very good pace from him, Alonso and Webber throughout the whole race. A very deserved win. No home GP win for anybody this season.

I'm curious however to Webber's good pace vs Vettel. There seems to be a crack in the RBR machine. Something's not right, Ferrari and McL have made progress. RBR in traffic does not perform that well, so V had to sit behind Massa for so long (or is that overtaking skill ?) and thanks to Ferrari's longish pitstop passed Massa.

Bad luck once again for Button another DNF. Good P6 for Sutil, Petrov managed to score points, I thought Ros and Schu would do better.

He needs to stop wondering and start figuring out how to stop it. That's 4 poles this season and 0 wins for Webber.

I think his result showed how much he is affected when things aren't exactly has he wants them. And it isn't the first time.

A strategy question with respect to the Vettel/Massa battle at the end of the race - given that RB (and indeed Ferrari) knew that the front 3 had all pitted for the allegedly slower tyres, but were all running faster, why on Earth did they leave Vettel out until the last lap (even accepting he ignored/didn't understand the radio instruction to do the opposite of Massa). They could have told him to pit with 3 or 4 laps to go and I'm sure he would have easily passed Massa, regardless of how good a pit-stop Massa had.

It seems to me a tactical error that luckily worked out for them due to a poor pit-stop by Ferrari.

Hmmm, given that the hard tyre wasn't the best (although proven opposite in the race in the final laps) and that Vettel wasn't so fast, and that Massa was on the softs I wouldn't be so sure about that. Ferrari's pit crew are to the ones to be thanked (unfortunately).
