If You See Money On The Ground, Do You Take It?

Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:52 am

Or do you leave it for someone who needs it more than you do?

I would pick it up, and try to find the rightful owner, I do not trust people all that much. I trust myself.

How much money are we talking about? Pocket change, as in a couple of quarters or a significant amount, like $10 or more?

I'm not going to care one way or the other who the rightful owner of a quarter may be or even something than say less than $5, unless I actually saw the person drop it. I'd try to return it then. Any other time, it's mine.

I have found large amounts of money (highest $80) in a parking lot on many occasions. Each time I turn it into the management of the establishment. Each time, no one has claimed it, and it was handed over to me.
I lift things up and put them down.

A sensible and realistic answer from someone who considers himself honest, as I do.

I've found money on 2 occasions - $5 and $50. I kept the $5..a few weeks later found a $50 bill at the university carpark..I just kept it...no point in handing it over to university security etc..they'll just pocket it anyway.

I found a $5 bill on the floor at Target a couple of weeks ago. I turned it into Guest Services with no expectation of ever seeing it again. I bet Target made $5 but I would have felt bad keeping it.

I did keep the dime I accidentally kicked in the supermarket parking lot tonight.

If I actually saw the person it dropped from, I would return it immediately. Otherwise if I find it on the street I keep it. If I am on a private place, like a parking lot or a club, bar etc. anything above $50 I give to management. Knowing that sometimes they´ll keep it, but sometimes they´ll return it to the rightful owner. At least my conscience is clean. Anything below $50 is mine.

Depends on the place and conditions under which I found it. If I saw the person drop it (whether bills or coins), I give it back, no questions asked. Otherwise, if I find a large dollar bill, I'll be around to see if the owner comes by. If I don't see anyone, finders keepers. I've been fooled too many times to be generous and give it to the first person I see walking by. It's a little harsh, but maybe the next time the person will be more careful with their money. Let's face it: how many honest people are there in this planet?

As for coins, I might bend and pick it up if it's silver colored. Pennies...meh

I found a 500NOK note last year in my hotel room, I kept it, if I didn't the maid would have, the person who lost if was probably on a plane and had left the country.

Finding money on the ground is one thing, finding a wallet with money in it is another, it's pretty difficult to prove ownership of a banknote, much easier to prove you own the wallet, I'll always hand in a wallet, never loose money.

I have no idea how much that is or what the "NOK" means. Fogive my ignorance please. But. Could it have been the tip left to the hotel chambermaid after the previous room occupant left?

Assuming no DSK type services were performed, of course.

NOK = Norwegian krone, 500NOK about 100 USD. The room was made up when I got it, the money was beside the tv, if it was for the maid she should have easily seen it when cleaning the room.

A wallet I will return to the police station.
Money, not - whatever the amount.

I will take the equal karma into consideration.

This kind of thing does not come my way. Never see money on the street, or elsewhere.
Even in Monaco people are very careful with their money, something I can't blame them for.

If I find cash of any value I ask around to see if anyone has lost it. In my experience its only been a few dollars so I've not felt bad pocketing it after.

I did lose my wallet while riding a bike in Vondelpark, Amsterdam in the summer of 03' and was greatly disappointed. Thank goodness I took over 200 Euros out beforehand. Over 6 months later an anonymous package arrived at my house in Tennessee, USA with my wallet and cash still inside. I was amazed.

I'd love to know who sent it to me so I could thank them.

I pick up coins, etc that I see on the street nearly every day (yes, including pennies). I keep a separate jar for them in my house. I collect Jan 1 to Dec 31 and then donate the year's total to a charity. I choose a different charity each year. Most years it yields between $10 and $20.

Last year I found $40 on one day. The money was with an ATM receipt so I took it to the bank labeled on the receipt. Was told they couldn't id the account and to keep the money - a big surprise to me. Made it a bigger donation year.

I would pick it up & try to find the owner.....If there is no trace of the owner....I'll give it to a few beggars or needy folks.

I found a $20 bill once in front of my local supermarket and kept it. If I would of turned it over to the store they would not try to find the owner and kept the 20 for themselves!

I seem to find cash quite often. I found $40 at a packed bar this year, as well as $20 in a deserted parking lot. I also find smaller denominations fairly often ($5 and such a couple times a year - I guess I have good eyes!).

For me, if I find it in a location where it would be very difficult to determine the rightful owner, I would just keep it. I have never turned simple cash over to a business (customer service or whatever), because I wouldn't trust the employees, and it would be very difficult for someone to claim it without it being attached to something identifiable like a wallet. I did find a wallet recently with about $100 in in, and returned it to the security guards at my place of work. The guy got it back the same day and called me to thank me.

The craziest I've experienced was when I was staying in a rented condo in Spain with my family in 2005. My sister found a scrummpled up 500-Euro bill on the top shelf of one of the cabinets in the kitchen! What we ended up doing was calling the owner of the condo (not specifying the denomination), and asking if any previous guests had reported any money lost. He indicated that no one had, nor had he lost money himself, so we ended up keeping it...

A couple years ago I found 20,000 yen in a bathroom stall at a train station - likely left by someone who was drunk as it was nearly midnight. That's around $200 so I called it my lucky day and pocketed the cash. Not my fault someone couldn't hold on to their cash.

Well it depends how much money. If it is a coin, or a small amount like $10 I would take it. No point handing it in. If it was a bunch of notes, then I would hand it in. I know how much the cops hate paperwork, sometimes you think to yourself, is it worth handing anything in when you deal with them.

So if you can find the owner, good. If not, you keep it? That doesn't sound reasonable. It still wasn't yours to begin with!

Ironic topic. When i lived in Long Beach and was unemployed, i was walking home one night from 7-11 and i saw about nine dollars on the sidewalk in front of someone's house. I didn't touch it. I assumed that once someone realized they'd dropped it they'd be back for it. My roomate at the time, who was also unemployed, practically threw a fit when i told him that i had seen the money but didn't pick it up. My attitude: it's not mine, so, i have no right to it.

My attitude: I hang on to my cash. If someone is unable to do same in certain venues, they had a right to lose it. A purse on the street or something like that? Different story. Cash in a toilet stall? Finders' keepers.

This is a good policy, though I probably would play "finder's keepers" with up to about $50. That said, I probably would ask management (if I was in a parking lot) first if someone had reported it missing.

Of course I'd keep it. Anyone who says they wouldn't is either too honest for their own good or lying - sure that's what we'd all like to do but in reality who would?

I found a £20 note in a hotel room drawer once, no point in handing it in as the hotel would have only pocketed it for themselves.

From that day every time I check into a hotel, the first thing I do is go through all the drawers when I arrive, and I check they're all empty again when I leave!

Wow! So the majority believe that if the original owner is too careless to hold on to the money, then ethically it beliefs to the finder???? Why?

So what if the hotel person pockets it?
