Hostage/Bomb Situation In Sydney

Wed Aug 03, 2011 1:07 pm

Worrying situation going on in SYD at present, an 18-year old has had a 'device' placed around her neck by an intruder to her home, been going on for several hours now. Police are not confiming the device is a bomb, but the bomb sqaud is on the scene & surrounding streets have been evacuated. The home is in the suburb of Mosman, one of the more exclusive Sydney suburbs. Not the sort of thing that normally goes on here.........

It has a remote connection with the Crimean War.

Jan is correct in its origin, but also Balaclava is local media code for the gear that a nasty person (usually male) who is bent on some misdeed wears so partly covering his head to make recognition difficult. In Jan's link, think the Top LEFT of the illustrations, but a bit less of the eyes showing. In practice could be a range of head-dress, but whatever, means that ID is a bit difficult.

Pic of her here. Still not sure if it would have exploded, but it obviously had them worried.

My reference to the Ibrahims was to a family who have been involved in a series of gun attacks and were the subject of a TV series last year, The Golden Mile about corruption in King's Cross.

The Nine Network has aired two prequels to the series, Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities and Underbelly: The Golden Mile.

Unless you are skiing, you generally do not want to meet one! So I suppose in other places ski-mask is what they would be called.

Non explosive, but according to a Chief Walloper this morning, quite well disguised. They consulted some fellows in the UK who apparently have a bit of experience with this sort of thing!!!! I had never heard of that, but they obviously had because they were on the blower quick as a flash to the UK for advice. Still took 10 hours to decide it was not going to go bang. Apparently quite plausible, but they will not say what made it look so plausible.

Apparently my friend you do manage to get out of the Southern Hemisphere, or at least visit the few ski areas south of the equator!

This story got quite a bit of airtime here in the States. I can't imagine what that young woman must have felt, it had to be terrifying. Being an 18 year old targeted because of her parents wealth. Unbelievable. I hope they catch the person(s) that did this to that family.

You cannot begin to imagine the number of subplots being mumbled about so this will remain close to our front pages for a while.

I do not know anything about her family and their wealth, but one of the commonest adjectives associated with Mr X Rich is the colourful Sydney identity X Rich - we like to use familiar names for our colourful identities. So far no "colour" has even been hinted at. But you can be sure if there is colour it will be produced and dissected. Colour in this context has nothing to do with skin, and everything to do with the types of activities that have lead to the wealth.

Interesting that it appears similar schemes have been sprung in the UK but AFAIK, those ones were kept fairly quiet. And given the kerfuffle with this one you can see why it would be a good idea. But I guess with evacuating a goodly part of a street, keeping it quiet would have been difficult.

If you want a few good rollicking murder stories get the DVD for Underbelly. But when you view it, remember that Mrs Moran is now in HM guest house on account of her being found guilty of murdering her brother in law, one of the folk depicted in the series. One of the shootings shown in Underbelly took place in a cafe next but one to where some of my Melbourne colleagues were having their usual Friday office lunch. You just never know!

Also remember that the person who did that particular shooting (found in court to be in self-defence) is about the only person featured in the first Underbelly who's either not dead, or serving a very long strech as a guest of Her Majesty.

Just a bit sickening to still see this person in the social pages of the paper attending chartity dinners, he even managed to get Jerry Lewis to sing his praises when he was down here a couple of months back, would've thought one of Jerry's minders would have given him a bit of background on who he was...........

When we do crime, we do seem to have a certain panache about it do we not?

I assume setting up a special task force for this latest effort in Sinney, they think there is a possibility that it is more than one guy taking a chance?????? Then again, task forces are the flavour of the century.

Some "simple" crimes seem to have lifted the lid off a monster mess.

On the other side there was a list in the Mockery (The Illawarra Mercury) the other day of how many suggested charges had arisen from the Wollongong Development/Sex/Bribes scandal and how few had got anywhere. And in Bunnings this afternoon had an hilarious conversation with an ex neighbour who now has as one of his neighbours - literally on the other side of an apartment wall - one of the stars in that fiasco.
