How Can Anyone Find This Stuff Entertaining?!

Tue Aug 16, 2011 5:20 pm

Why do people still watch Jerry Springer nowadays? Totally incomprehensible to me that this guy has been on TV for so long. There must be rather sustained market for this stuff.

I thought this thread would be about Jersey Shore before I opened it.

It's our good old sense of Schadenfreude! As long as we like to watch people we hate and/or people we can look down on in order to feel better about ourselves, such shows will continue to exist!

Maybe so, but isnt this just a little bit too much? I have seen Jerry Springer's show a few times, and I truly believe it is a disgrace. It is sad to see how low some people can go.

Jersey Shore

While we're at it:

Real Housewives of (whatever locale you want)

16 And Pregnant/Teen Mom

(John &amp Wink Kate Plus 8

The Hills

or basically any other "reality" show on TV. Not only is most of it scripted (or at least set up by the producers), it actually glamorizes people being pond-sucking scum.

No thanks.

I catch part of Springer every so often. I like how the Q&A always turns into a huge fight or almost a roast of the guests. Pretty funny.

Ten years ago I was working with someone from Boston. One day she came into work saying that she'd watched an episode of Jerry Springer and there on her TV screen was an old school friend who was claiming that his wife had cheated on him with a mutual friend. The thing was, as far as she was concerned, her school friend was out as being gay and far from being married to a woman. So she got straight on the phone to her mother back in MA to tell her what she had seen, and guess what? Yes, her mother told her that she knew of the situation and that her old gay school friend had been paid to be on the show.

I'm saying no more.

Ok,

So I'll admit it... I do watch Jerseylicious...

I dont consider myself to be dumb... I am fairly educated (MBA and all).... I dont consider myself shallow... I am aware of world news and politics... I read at least one book a month... I love to debate and read about history...

But Jerseylicious is so entertaining... I love it. It's like looking at a car-wreck... horrible, but fascinating (in a negative way, of course).

I think humanity has this fascination with freakshows. We just can't get enough of them.

Unfortunately this reality show trend is here to stay. They are cheap to make, the "talent" (if you want to call it that) is rather abundant, it takes very little if anything to write any of it and they are quick to produce. In some ways it is almost an extension of the TV game show. Only there is no prize!

I always thought Springer and Maury were just filler-shows for me to indulge myself in before The Price is Right came on at 11.

I just find Springer entertaining because it's like watching a semi-scripted wrestling match/soap opera from Hell that, on the odd occasion, has 'interesting' show premises.

It's either Springer or...well...Springer for my weekday morning coffee-sipping TV show.

Occasionally, it's good to "slum it" intellectually. I don't mind saying that I am a highly intelligent and educated guy. I also have a very demanding job that requires me to apply myself quite intensely.

Therefore, when "at leisure" for the most part I like to watch things that are fairly low-brow. (even reading I will alternate between light "John Grisham" style and more demanding and profound reading)

However, Jerry Springer has always been a step too far for me. Not so much for the intelligence level, but more so that I am a believer that it is all BS, scripted actors, etc. The shows structure/formula just plays out a little to contrived

Speaking of Jerry Springer................................................( you'll love this )

Back in the early 60's, I was working in Cincinnati for Yellow Freight as a "city man" while I was on lay-off from my road job; at the time, guess who the mayor of Cincinnati was ? Jerry Springer ! Anyway, being the mayor, Jerry had a city owned car; one day a Cincinnati cop chased a "perp" across the suspension bridge into Newport , KY; while he was in Newport, he notices the "mayor's car parked.................in front of a "cat-house"; he gets out, checks things out, and catches "the mayor" just pulling his pants back up. True story ! ( The newspapers had a field day with it ! )

I often thought it would be fun to get on his stupid show and ask him about it.

But I have to tell you this about Jerry; he isn't stupid; after all the "flap" over the "whore-house episode", he tried to run for Governor; that didn't work, so he convinced WLW to make him the evening news anchor; that DID work ! After a few years (and making big bucks, he announces he's getting this "show" on radio in Chicago; even commuted back & forth for a year or so. Then he gets on TV..............and the guy's making MILLIONS ever since.

I've even met the guy; he's very personable; easy to talk to; but he wanted to get rich and he has ! So at least he's successful !

They are all staged scenes, and plots repeated to death... and as long as people continue to tune in, the show will prevail. Or for that matter, every other nonsense show which does nothing for society!
