Is There An 'airliners.net' For Ships?

Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:17 am

I discovered www.planefinder.net which tells me what planes are flying where. It really is a cool site. There's also a 'ship finder' companion web site. So I can see indications for what ships are in our area; different color codes for different types of ships. The ship names are indicated, but what would be great is if I could go to a web site and see a picture (or pictures) that enthusiasts took of a particular ship...like I do with airliners here on airliners.net.

Does such a ship-related site exist?

PlaneFinder seems to be much better. At any given time, I'll see more planes shown and identified on that one than on Flightradar24.

PlaneFinder was very slow on my High-End system, which FR24 doesn't!

The best one I've found so far is http://www.nauticalcities.com.

My two most favourite online ship trackers are

sailwx
http://www.sailwx.info/

and AIS
marinetraffc.com
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/def...x=30&centery=25&zoom=2&level1=140#

Both great sites and really accurate unless the ships haven't reported to the radars or are at rest.

let's try finding for example... Laksmi Mittal's yacht "Amevi"
go here and enter the yacht/ship name or call sign if you have it and you will get their position if the ship/yacht has reported it

http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/search.phtml

Ship last reported (UTC) position Callsign More info
AMEVI 2011-Aug-21 2128 N 36°25', E 022°57' ZCPY4

or richard branson's catamaran Necker Belle
Ship last reported (UTC) position Callsign More info
NECKER BELLE 2011-Aug-12 2056 N 18°24', W 064°32' MKYK7

or eric clapton's yacht Aviva
AVIVA 2011-Aug-22 1333 N 38°24', W 009°46' ZCPZ6

or the fabled Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2 2011-Aug-22 1329 N 40°41', W 074°01' GBQM
QUEEN MARY 2 WSQ5200 ULS VDC

You click on the position and you get the ship on the map.

Yesterday the Ruby Princess (290 meters long) was in port it was really nice watching her leaving from the pier. Todya we have Niew Amsterdam - she is 285 meters.

Our next big visitor will be Grand Princess this coming Friday - 290 m long.
