R.E.M. Is No More...

Wed Sep 21, 2011 6:37 pm

After 30 years on the road, band members decided to go their separate ways...

Their music was part of the soundtrack of my life growing up.

Weird, I just heard a riff of theirs being used on a segue on TV and thought to myself that I hadn't heard any of their music in a while... I don't think I have any on my iPod, but I probably have the CDs some where in the attic. I guess that says it all, no?
Inspiration, move me brightly!

I've been a fan since Lifes Rich Pageant came out in the mid-80s. I think Automatic for the People was a great album, but they kinda lost me after that. Not that they went stale or anything, it's just their and my musical tastes took different paths.

R.E.M. is the band I think of when I think of late 80s, early 90s indie/alternative/college rock. TBH I didn't even know that they were still touring or making albums.

They had a good run. Nothing wrong with calling it quits when you've pretty much said all you have to say musically. There's a lot of bands that just keep on plugging along well past the time they should have retired the brand. Like old athletes that don't know when to call it a career.

For me they pretty much ended when Berry left.

Ran into Michael Stipes in Athens a couple times, the guy's an ass. Never really was a big fan of theirs.

I'm not a huge fan of them, though I do like a few of their songs. I was wondering if there was a thread about this and I'm glad there is. Like them or not, they were a very influental band even though they haven't done much in recent years.

Is his talking voice as whiney as his singing voice?

...and that has not been a good thing. They have influenced a whole generation of crappy, whiney, wimpy male rock vocalist.

Saw them in concert back in '89 on their "Green" tour. They had alot of energy and the music was enjoyable. Following that I just lost interest as their following albums were rather morose and quite boring. I too honestly thought they packed it in years ago.
