Anyone Have Any Useless, Fun Facts?

Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:47 am

Know any fun, weird facts... for example...

What is called a "French kiss" in the English speaking world is known as an "English kiss" in France.

A cockroach can live several weeks with its head cut off!

You can't kill yourself by holding your breath

There is a city called Rome on every continent.

It's against the law to have a pet dog in Iceland!

It's against the law to burp, or sneeze in a church in Nebraska, USA.

Months that begin on a Sunday will always have a "Friday the 13th."

Coca-Cola would be green if colouring weren’t added to it.

In Kentucky, you have to take a bath at least once a year.

If you think the US Treasury prints a lot of money, you should know that more Monopoly money is printed than US currency.

AA saved $440,000 by removing one olive from their first class salads back in 1987.

Combine all the other planets in the solar system and Jupiter is still bigger.

It is against the law to slam your car door in Switzerland.

In Utah, birds have the right of way in a public highway.

In Tennessee, it is an offense to drive while sleeping (I've never tried it before...so tempting...)

In Miami, it is forbidden to imitate an animal.

A Graham's number is unimaginably large..it is so large that there is no space in the entire observable universe to write it.
The last ten digits of Graham's number are ...2464195387.

The quote linked to there does not disprove the above "fact". The quote on the coca cola company website simply says coke has always been brown (at the point of sale). It does not say that it is not naturally green. i.e they may have always added colouring to it to make it appear brown rather than green...

Useless Information You Really Need to Know...

If you yelled for eight years, seven months and six days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.)

Two-thirds of the world's eggplants are grown in New Jersey. (That's funny... at least two-thirds of the world's upraised middle fingers come from New Jersey, too.)

If you farted consistently for six years and nine months, enough gas would be produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it.)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood thirty feet. (Yipes!)

Most banks have Braille on drive-through ATM machines. (Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people do. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference? Anyway, is this going anywhere?)

A pig's orgasm lasts thirty minutes. (What? Can you just imagine it? That's almost beyond comprehension!)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Still not over that pig thing... )

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. (Thirty minutes - can that be right?)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (In my next life I want to be a pig.)

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (Can you imagine - thirty minutes!)

In his book "The Insects," naturalist Url N. Lanham reports that the aphid reproductive cycle is so rapid that the females are born pregnant. (Poor aphids – lucky pigs!)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head, before it starves to death. (Nothing new here. I know politicians who can go six years easy. Tell me more about the pig.)

Some lions mate over fifty times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life. Quality over quantity.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. ("Honey, I'm home. Wow, don't you look lovely! Hey, what the... ")

Butterflies taste with their feet. (That's something I always wanted to know.)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing... but I can't get that pig thing off my mind. Thirty minutes!)

A cat's urine glows under a blacklight. (Wonder who was paid to figure that out. Your tax dollars at work.)

An ant can lift fifty times its own weight, pull thirty times it own weight, and will always fall on its right side when intoxicated? (I wonder if the pig falls on its right side when it's finished. I would be happy with ten... even five minutes!)

The only animal besides the human that can get sunburn is the pig. (And do you really think that the pig even cares? Thirty minutes is a half an hour!)
The first major use for peanuts was as food for pigs. (Hmmm... do you think that if one ate five bags of peanuts they might have a thirty minute orgasm?)

Peanuts are cholesterol-free. (A non-fattening aphrodisiac?)

Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite. (Well, I'm not going to try eating any dynamite!)

The first notable use of peanuts as food for humans came during the Civil War, when both Northern and Southern troops used the peanut as a food source during hard times. (Guess this peanut thing isn't the answer. Wonder what else could make it last thirty minutes for the pig?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (Hey, I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed. (Who knew? Who cares!)

Every year 11,000 Americans hurt themselves trying out bizarre sexual positions. (Hmmm... I better watch out.)

Sex burns 360 calories per hour. (Wonder how many calories a pig burns during orgasm...)

The first toilet ever seen on television was on "Leave It To Beaver." (Maybe so, but you never saw them flush it.)

The first couple to share a double bed on prime-time television was Fred and Wilma Flintstone. (Doesn't that just figure - cartoon characters! You know, pigs don't need beds.)

One male dog or cat can personally father 750 babies. (Who cares? It's the pigs that are having all the fun.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmm... really?)

A giraffe has a 21-inch tongue. (There are times that could be useful... )

A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out. (I wonder if the pig sticks its tongue out during orgasm.)

There are only three animals with blue tongues, the Black Bear, the Chow dog and the blue-tongued lizard. (Who cares?)

Everyone's tongue print is different. (So what? Change the subject!)

Your nose and ears never stop growing. (I wonder... oh, never mind. Let's just move along, please.)

Hershey's Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like it's kissing the conveyor belt. (That might be interesting to watch... just visualize it.)

Barbie's measurements if she were life size: 39-23-33 (That's interesting, but every time I see the number 3, I can't help but think about those pigs!)

The Ramses brand condom is named after the great pharaoh Ramses II who fathered over 160 children. (Looks like we're changing the numbers as a distraction now.)

One beaver can cut down 216 trees a year. (Are we going to start with the beaver jokes now?)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about the pig? With a thirty minute orgasm, I highly doubt that a pig is doing it as a substitute for going to the gym!)

Denmark has more coastline than continental USA

So that'd be minus Greenland and the Faroe Islands for DK

and minus Alaska and Hawaii and other overseas territories for the USA

Don't believe it? Well do a search. It does not sound realistic, but as far as I can tell, the info is correct.

Does that count the USA's Gulf Coast? Or the Great Lakes? If so, wow.

I knew about Norway, what with all those fjords, but that's pretty amazing about Denmark. I do have to admit that the more I think of it, our coasts are pretty straightish, except for Maine and Oregon. Which also have the practice of naming cities "Portland" in common as well...

1.) Still my favorite equation in math, and still boggles my mind even though I've learned it in multiple math classes:

e^(i*pi) = -1

Or, to phrase it in a way that uses mathematicians' 5 favorite numbers (as my high school calc teacher told us):

e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0

What else to I have....

2.) There are no integers a, b, c for integer n > 2 that satisfies the following:

a^n + b^n = c^n

That would be Fermat's Last Theorem, stated in 1637 and finally proved in 1995.

3.) It is conjectured that there are infinitely many twin primes (two prime numbers with a difference of 2) such as (5,7) and (11,13).

(If anyone can't tell, I've been reading a bunch about number theory lately   )

Yeah, basically the estimated how many flakes are in a square mile of snow an inch deep, then estimate how much snow falls per year and the amount of land that is covered on average by snow each year. Then finally, they estimate there have been around 3 to 3.5 billion winters, and voila, you have the estimated number of snowflakes that have ever fallen on Earth!

RE: Anyone Have Any Useless, Fun Facts?

Mon Sep 26, 2011 9:43 pm

There's so many facts here that are little more than urban legends and came from those lame chain emails. Let get some real facts out here shall we?

I've got some of my own, I know it's non-av but as a flight instructor I always like to point these out to my students:

*There's no specific (FAA) regulation saying an airplane strictly has to land on a runway.

*You can legally drop anything you want from an airplane as long as you don't cause damage to property or persons.

*I've successfully hovered and even flown a plane backwards

Does that count the USA's Gulf Coast? Or the Great Lakes? If so, wow.

I knew about Norway, what with all those fjords, but that's pretty amazing about Denmark. I do have to admit that the more I think of it, our coasts are pretty straightish, except for Maine and Oregon. Which also have the practice of naming cities "Portland" in common as well...

I think it only goes for the coastlines at the oceans, but I am not 100% sure.

But yes, no one believes me when I tell them this.

Somehow, I'm still not convinced. I mean, I know Denmark has a few islands scattered nearby, but I'd have to see measurements. How can a country many times Denmark's size, with 2 coastlines (Pacific coast, Atlantic coast), have a shorter coastline?

According to this article, the US has more, though I suppose it takes into account Alaska and Hawaii.

I don't know...I'd like to see proof of this.

Mt. McKinley (Denali) has the highest topographic prominence of any mountain that's not a high point of the land mass on which it's situated (it's 3rd overall behind Everest and Aconcagua). This is despite the fact that Denali isn't even in the 100 tallest peaks in the world.

Rhode Island is the smallest US state with the longest official name: State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Alaska is the largest US state with the 4th smallest population.

Juneau (capital of Alaska) is the only US state capital inaccessible by road.

I'm sure I have more somewhere in my brian.....

Marilyn Manson was a regular actor on the "Wonder Years"

Really!!!!

No, "Marilyn Manson was NOT on the Winder Years". This question got asked so much, that BBC Radio 1 named a feature after this, whereby people wrote in asking questions that they would research and find the answer to.

Yes, that is of course with Alaska and Hawaii included.

If we include Greenland to Denmarks coastline, then Denmark still has much more coastline.

But I agree with you, I have a hard time believing this myself, but according to the info I could find on the internet, then it seems that if you deduct Alaska and Hawaii from the coastline of the USA, then Denmark has more coastline.

Even according to the wikipedia article there, Denmark alone has almost the same amount of coastline that Brazil has.

This is not that hard to work out. According to the CIA World Factbook, the coastlines of the two countries are as follows:

Denmark: 7314km
USA (Total): 19924km

According to http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001801.html the coastline of Hawaii and Alaska are as follows:

Hawaii: 1207 km
Alaska: 10685 km.

That gives the USA (exc. Hawaii and Alaska) a coastline of 8032km, which is still greater than Denmark's coastline of 7314.

Okay so even if "myth is busted", it is still quite thought provoking that such a small country is just 700 km short of coastline compared to such a large country.
