Must Have Android Apps

Mon Sep 26, 2011 7:13 am

I'm getting a Nexus S tomorrow and I wanted to know what some must have apps for it are. I know Flightaware is a natural, but what other apps are absolutely necessary?

This list has several of the apps I use.

It also has a tutorial link in the first paragraph about how to use QR barcodes to download the apps quickly (although they have you download ShopSavvy whereas most of us prefer BarcodeReader).

As for other things on my phone, I'm a fan of internet radio, and am using AOR to listen to various radio stations, but I imagine there are some better apps out there for that.
Inspiration, move me brightly! Light the song with sense and color.
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.
Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last.
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin!

A few for me.

First, Operation apps:
Pandora (or iHeart Radio) - radio streaming is one of the best things about smart phones, IMHO.
Green Power (battery saver app) - I used JuiceDefender for a long time, but I didn't like how intrusive it was. I've since switched to Green Power, and I just ran 63 hours on a single charge. If you have a job where you can't make personal calls or use your phone much during the day other than texting, and you don't use it during your commute, this app is absolutely incredible. I went from barely lasting a day to running 2+ days on a charge.
K-9 Mail - if you use any e-mail provider other than g-mail, this is the best I've ever run into.
Wapedia - Wikipedia app
RailBandit - depending on where you live, this is the most comprehensive set of mass-transit schedules I've come across in the Android market.

Games:
WordFeud - iPhone users swear by "Words with Friends", but it is very unstable on Android and really bothered me. If most of your friends are into Scrabble-type games and use Android, WordFeud is great.
Dragon, Fly - a mindless, addicting game with a great physics engine. Lacks some development, and is short on levels, but hopefully this will change soon as they continue to update the app.
Live Hold'e, - if you're into Poker, there's nothing better. And definitely worth the paid version.
MathDoku - if you're into KenKen and Sudoku, this app is great.

Widgets:
Dazzle - this is a customizable "one-touch" access toolbar you can place anywhere on your home screens. Some phones come with something similar, but none of the built-in ones have proven to be any good to me. Dazzle can have icons for things like Ring Volume, Brightness, Wi-Fi, GPS, Sync, Bluetooth, and a whole lot more. No better way to manage your phone's functions.
Beautiful Widgets - great weather, clock, and calendar widget that is fully customizable in looks and function. You can really make this your own, it is fast and stable, and looks great.
