Are You Watching The World Series?

Thu Oct 20, 2011 1:30 am

Not poker, baseball. Nappy just hit a 2 run HR and tied it up 2 -2 in game 1. This series, Rangers vs. Cardinals could turn out to be a good one despite all the stats saying no. Thoughts?

Why is it called "the world series" when it only involves the US and Canada?

Yes, I'm watching it, but flipping around quite a bit too. A lot of other people won't be watching it though. I expect this World Series to have some of the lowest TV ratings in recent history. Dallas is a big market, but unless you're a fan of one of the teams, this matchup likely doesn't do much for you.

First, the best players come to the MLB to play. Secondly, the World Baseball Classic blows to high heaven. Nobody watches that crap.

I can't watch it here at work, but I'm listening to it on KESN radio out of Dallas. I've already agreed to shout a round of beer to many of my coworkers if the Rangers get to a clinching game. I'll find a nearby pub and we'll catch the game. There shouldn't be too many other sports going on here at 2 pm!

Go Rangers!

I will watch when a clinching game comes. If the Brewers where in it I would want to watch it more. I like baseball watched many of the Divisional and League Championship games but Cards v. Rangers probably the most boring combo possible that could have happened in this playoff IMO.

Because it has been that way since 1903.
And no other country has a league nearly as good and talented. The only possible league which may somewhat be able to compete with the MLB is Cuban baseball.

Same here, its gonna be tough for me to watch the first couple of games since they were so close to making it, but I'll get over it eventually. I'll be rooting for the Rangers, not just because of the recent Brewers-Cardinals rivalry, but I like Hamilton and he's one of my favorite players.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Yea. I really like a lot of the Brewers players, some of my favorite in the league.

When I'm around a TV (hasn't been the case for a few days, and won't be for a few more), I'll watch it. But I'm not going out of my way to do so.

Go Cards - I've had a soft spot for them ever since they beat the Phillies the way they did, and I'd like to see Berkman get a ring.

There's your credible answer.

MLB's clubs collect baseball talent from all over the baseball playing world, so World Series (of Baseball) is entirely appropriate.

Having missed Game 1 of the World Series I think I will watch the first couple of innings of tonights game. But I am not going to place any bets who will make it in the end. After the epic fail of the Red Sox in September and the elimination of the Tigers and Justin Verlander I am confident, that whoever I would pick, would definitely loose.

Since my team, the Giants, are not in it I will not be able to sit through the agonizing pain that is listening to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. I dealt with it last year because I had to for my team, but there is no way I can handle casually watching games featuring their horrible commentary. I tried the other night in the final ALCS game and it didn't go well. I can't stand hearing their pointless, trivial stats. They give a stat for EVERYTHING. ARGH! Tell me about the dynamics of the game, not when the last time a right hander under the age of 28 hit a double to right center in the bottom of the 7th inning with men on first and third in a game 2 or the world series! WHO CARES?!

I missed the original quote, but the next inning he corrected himself, saying it was a six letter word. He also said he spend the entire time between innings thinking about it. Must have been taxing (also a six letter word, btw).

Rangers score two in the ninth- bringing the series home all tied-up.

This is classic baseball- seriously good pitching, incredible strategic maneuvering, and perhaps the two most appealing managers in baseball.

Ron Washington is such a good guy, the way he talks about his team, almost makes me wanna cry.

This series is what baseball is all about.

I watched the game from the 2nd until the end of the 7th.
The highlights for me until I turned off the PC:

- Jaime Garcia´s pitching
- The two diving catches by Elvis Andrus with the following double plays

HOLY CRAP WHAT A GAME.

Cardinals down to their last strike TWICE (in two different innings), manage to tie it up both times, and then hit the walk-off homer in the 11th. This is why baseball is great.

It is baseball, not football. Coming back from a disappointment, a game which slipped away is how teams get to the World Series.

Tomorrow is a new day and a new game.

The biggest thing tomorrow is that neither team has much pitching left - and tonight it looked to me that the quality of the hitters in this series has caught up with the pitching, maybe even passed the pitchers.

True, but Texas got the wind punched right out of them..twice! STL has the momentum now, AND they are at home!

In 2002 the Giants blew game 6 and didn't recover. I cried myself to sleep every night for 8 years until last year when they made it all better. lol

Then in 2003, we all know what happened to Chicago after a disastrous game 6 of the NLCS.

Like I said, good luck Texas. I actually want Texas to win, but I have a feeling we saw STL win the series last night. Should be fun to watch either way!

There is no such thing as game to game momentum. Winning one game does not in any way affect the outcome of the next game. Sure there are injuries, fatigue, etc. to deal with, but "momentum" is a myth.

Update:It looks like game 6 will not be shown.Like it's been pulled. The Dish schedule is showing game 6 replay from 12-2.

I've never been a big fan of baseball but being from close to the St Louis area I decided to watch a couple games during the WS. If every game was like last night, I might get into being a baseball fan. If the Mariners didn't suck so bad.

Anyway, I wouldn't go so far as saying this:

Quoting BMI727 (Reply 36):

Even though it was sloppy at times, coming back from 2 outs and a 1-2 count twice to tie and later win the game sure made it seem that the Cardinals wanted to win it more. Highly entertaining though, I'll have it on tonight.

Trust me, you wouldn't want to be a Texas fan last night. That was fun to watch because I didn't really care who wins (although I'd like to see Texas win) but if I had been a fan of either team last night, I'd be missing a few hairs. I've been through a World Series like this with my team...worst day of my life! lol

Quoting BMI727 (Reply 39):

Call it what you want, but history is not on Texas' side tonight. I do hope they win. What happens tonight will determine the signiciance of last night in baseball history books. If Texas wins, we forget about last night. If they lose, we'll be talking about this series for a long, long time.

Well, thankfully I'm already missing most of my hair!!!

I'm ascribing some of the goofs to trying too hard to win. At least the Rangers played last night, they didn't lay down and quit. Unfortunately neither did the Cardinals.

These are supposed to be the two best teams in baseball. It ain't supposed to be easy.

Other than having been to a few Cardinals games growing up and before I moved west, if I had to chose a team it would be the Cardinals but I won't pretend to be a fan. So, not much different than you.

As an aside, could Nolan Ryan smile just once? They have the camera on him all the time.

And they'd be wrong. There are thousands of factors that go into whether or not a team wins a baseball game. Whether or not they won the night before is not one of them.

Momentum is not real. It's a convenient cliche for soundalike hack talking heads on the four letter network.

Game 6 had decent entertainment value as a dispassionate observer, but it was the World Series game that made us wonder just how these teams made it to the World Series. Baseball is funny that way: the playoffs are a crapshoot. The best team doesn't always win.

He does. He was high fiving and hugging the folks around him after Hamilton's homer. They just show Ron Washington at those moments because he is so excited.

Sometimes I suspect Nolan is wishing he was on the field rather than in the stands. Especially when Feliz or Ogando walked a batter.

Top of the first inning looked good for the Rangers, but walking two of the first batters is NOT the way to hold a 2 point lead.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why you feel this way. You're not saying you don't think that they're right, you're absolutly saying it's wrong. Given the atmosphere in St. Louis the past couple nights, I would disagree. The fans carry that momentum into game 7 just as much as the players do.

With the start the Rangers had I thought I could look away, but the Cards came back fast. Not over yet though. If last night taught me anything it's not yet done.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

You're not saying you don't think that they're right, you're absolutly saying it's wrong.

Because it is absolutely wrong. Winning one game in and of itself does not affect the chances of winning the next or any other game.

The fans carry that momentum into game 7 just as much as the players do.

No they don't. Home field advantage is one thing. Momentum is about as real as the Great Pumpkin.

Baseball people are finally moving past crap like that into the realm of reality and what really matters. It's time fans do too.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?
