GE Working On A New Passenger Locomotive

Thu Nov 03, 2011 6:29 pm

Yes, GE is working on a new passenger locomotive, that could travel between 125 or 130 mph. The new locomotive will use the EVO locos, as a partly bases for the design.

Here is a drawing of the new locomotive.

This is excellent! I wonder what the 10 US corridors they're working on upping the speeds to 110-plus on.

Is it just me, or does it kind of look like a "touched in the head" P42?

I thought that as well... I was kinda hoping they would have something a little more aerodynamically designed like the trains they have over in Europe (TGV, ICE, etc), but I'll take it for now...

Or at least something somewhat similar to the Acela trainsets. Thems some smexy trains

Looks like Deltic or some Euro diesel. Not terribly impressed.

And why specifically a passenger loco? SHould have the option to gear it for freight or high speed cruising...

Already looks dated. But I suppose function over form.

I guess their R&D can afford this since they don't pay income tax.

The new GE proposed locomotive looks a little like the old EMD AEM-7(toaster) locos of the Northeast Corridor, something between the P42 as mentioned above and the AEM.

Not impressed. Give it a second prime mover and better styling.

I thought Amtrak was working on a Gas turbine version of the Acela for non electrified track, that could use high speed rail service.

Amtrak isn't working on any such thing. Bombardier was working on something called the JetTrain, which looked like an Acela. However, the fuel cost of such a thing killed it (just like it killed the Turbo trains in New York).

Also, for what it's worth, the caption clearly states that's what the locomotive "could" look like. The actual final design is probably far from being completed.

The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word, and doesn't even make sense.

This locomotive will probably among the fastest diesel-electric locomotives ever built, probably almost as fast as the British Rail Class 43 HST's. That's not a mean feat, especially since the locomotive will have to meet the new EPA Tier 3 emissions standards.

Very much so. I'm not too familiar with locomotives, but the first thing that came to mind was Germany's DB locomotives - from the 70s. Having just looked it up, actually more like the late 60s:

Hmmm... 125-130 mph compared to the DB locomotive above which did roughly 90 mph and was designed some 40+ years ago. Impressive, lol.

The 218 was designed for 160 km/h which is roughly 100 mph, but reduced to 140 kmh as the design speed was not needed in regular service for this locomotive.

There was a test loco BR202 which was designed for 250 kmh which is roughly 155 mph. In regular service, such a Diesel loco was not needed because all lines which allowed high speed of 250 kmh had been equipped with catenary systems.

In other words, the new GE loco may have some state of the art technical features, the design speed is nothing new.

I'd agree if there wasn't a need to clean up diesel exhaust emissions, but since such controls do sap a little power from the prime mover, being able to top out over 200 km/h and still meet EPA's new Tier 3 emissions standards is still pretty amazing.
