Famous quotes

"Never trust anyone over 30"
"Nothing would be stupider than a 60 years old up on a stage singing rock and roll"

Boy were we dumb. It's nice being almost 60, and I wish I had Mick Jagger's energy.

Stairway to Heaven is still on my playlist.

The nice thing is we are starting to hear it and other of their songs in the local nursing homes.

Ditto that - saw them for the first time in 1973 - a lifetime ago. There's lots of people I work with who weren't even born then! When I tell some of the younger folks I saw Zep three times and had 3rd row tickets for a fourth time when Bonzo died they were envious. I know exactly how they felt because that's how I felt when older friends of mine tell me about seeing Hendrix, The Beatles and the Stones when Mick Taylor was still in the band

Love Led Zeppelin but I can say Stairway is not even on my list of top 10 favorite songs by them. I remember going into a guitar store as a kid and saw a sign that read "If you play Stairway to Heaven management reserves the right to help you discover if on really exists!"

  - anyone going into a guitar store should be banned from playing Stairway, Smoke on the Water or Freebird.

Maybe a good topic for another thread - your favorite Zeppelin Tunes.

We may be getting on in years, but it was a great time for music. Life before &*^$# "Disco" was good indeed!

Top of my list - over the hills and far away. I love the loping feel of the whole thing. Ramble on would be number two. Stairway is such a cliche, so maybe 10-12 on my list.

Well, considering we just celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of Led Zeppelin IV, a few of my songs are on that album. Stairway to Heaven is obvious, but some others are:

Four Stix (IV)
Black Dog (IV)
When the Levee Breaks (IV)
Thank you (II)
Whole Lot of love (II)
Over the hills and far away
Kashmir (Physical Grafiti)

And back in 1973 concert tickets were affordable!
In 1965 I saw the Beatles, prices were $5.50, $6.50, $7.50 & $8.50. Almost anyone could afford to go!

And throughout the 80s the prices were $12-$18 for top name acts like Pink Floyd, the Stones, etc.

Now the official price for a Roger Waters concert runs from $70-$230.

I think part of the difference is that in the old days, Concert tours were never intended to really make money - they were to promote record sales. If the tour itself broke even, that was fine if it helped you sell a million records.

But now that everyone listens to pirated music and music sales are down across the board, they figured to actually start making money on the tours.

Wait until you can remember groups some 60 plus years ago. There is another way to look at it all, count your blessings when you can remember that far back.

I got fired from a radio station in Shreveport, LA on a weekend wee-hours gig in Feb 1970 for playing the uncut version of that song.
