Berlusconi To Resign!

Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:19 pm

Just announced on the Beeb:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15646536

He will go after major financial reforms have been approved.

More to follow.

Thoughts?

Word is that former EU Commissioner Mario Monti will take over as PM, but that's only speculation.

It will be interesting to see how the markets react to this.

He will go after major financial reforms have been approved.

Meaning he will be there forever?

Cynicism. See above.

I will give him 100 euros of my own to go!

Personally, I think he's resigning because he's been told the bunga bunga party of all bunga bunga parties will follow the resignation. Silvio was never one to turn down young, new you-know-what. Just ask them.

Are you implying that he is willing to step down if they pass the austerity measures that would otherwise languish in the legislature if he stayed?

If I am interpreting that correctly, it sounds like quite the selfless act. I would be trully shocked if I see this, from any politician let alone him...

I am sure this won't come to fruition, Silvio enjoys lingering like a bad smell and unless he keels over tomorrow he'll be in power forever.

Mario Monti has just been appointed as senator for life by the President of the Republic.

Especially if he loses all immunity and becomes fair game for criminal investigations into his various shady deals.

Exactly what I was going to say, and what a lot of Italian papers are saying. But in a way, I don't want him to resign, I want him to lose elections with a miserable result !

I think it's likely that Berlusconi could step down as early as tomorrow. Nobody wants him around, more or less.

The markets are rattled....the question is when the new government comes in will they make the changes necessary? Same question in Greece...it's tough when the people are now so dependent on government...

Berlusconi is resigning because he doesn't have the spine to fix Italy's financial woes...

He is too deep in the brown stuff himself, with all the accusations of tax dodging leveled against him. He tried to change laws, so that he would get immunity for illegal practices within his own business conglomerate, but it is also known that he is well connected with organised crime.

Yeah but that's been going on forever though...
