Thailand Floods Impact On The Computer Industry

Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:49 pm

So I have heard that Western Digital will not be able to ship any 2.5" hard drives for six or so months. And WD is not the only manufacturer affected, many HDD manufacturers are greatly impacted by the floods in Thailand. So what will be the impact on the industry as a whole? Will it cause a shift to solid state drives faster than is occurring already? Is SSD even a real option? How will it affect the "cloud" industry and the servers farms that the big internet companies have and depend on?

I was basically told that if I was planning on getting a computer for Christmas or in the near future, I should do it now.

If you plan to buy a laptop yes. If you plan to have a desktop machine custom built, it's already too late. The HDD's are already very expensive. I've gone to Tiger Direct to return a CPU last Saturday and couldn't believe what I saw. The 1 TB Barracuda I paid $ 59 for a month ago is now offered for $ 250. The 2 TB Barracudas I purchased some time ago for $ 79/piece are offered now for $ 350. And they will only sell you one! Good luck if you want to build a NAS.

it won't only be the HD manufacturers. Many other industries will likely be affected. I work in the injection molding industry and there were many Japanese car companies who had molders based in Thailand that were underwater. They didn't know when they would even get to their factories and even when they did, it was going to be a bit of time before they could get new machinery.

That is true. The Honda plant in Ayutthaya and many other suppliers have been under under. Up to 3 meters deep in some areas. This has inter-upped production in plants that aren't flooded as well.
