Russia Finally Joins The WTO

Fri Nov 11, 2011 11:42 pm

18-year in the making, Russia this week agreed on final terms that would clear the way for ascension into the World Trade Organization.

Initial immediate benefits are estimated $4bil in added imports from Europe with lower tariffs and easier exports of oil, gas and steel avoiding quotas.

Biggest mistake we have made in a while. Makes me think twice about who I will vote for in the upcoming election.

Granted, the WTO means managed trade, not free trade, but do you dispute this paragraph of the article?

Under the deal, Russians would be able to buy European-made cars and trucks, furniture, clothes and all sorts of consumers goods and industrial machinery at far lower prices than before.

Its a great way to kill domestic industry though. Although it will make them have to compete or die.

Horrible. The Russian government should be dismissed after another treason.

Why the opposition?

Is opening up Russia's economy, reducing trade barriers, growing the economy and partnering with other nations not a good thing?

Yes for those old Soviet industries that are not competitive this would be long overdue kick in their pants to either compete or die as previous poster mentioned. Don't think it benefits Russia, or its consumers to prop up inefficient weak enterprises or industries.
