New Computer And Program Junk

Mon Dec 05, 2011 5:26 pm

Howdy!

Was just given a new laptop for christmas/birthday. My first time using something other than XP in a long time. Also some programs are much updated versus the version of them I have on my other computer. Overall I like it, it's nicer and faster than my old one and as much as I still love my old one I was probably overdue for an upgrade.

Rant: Whats with all the junk! Gadjets and see through menu bars and message centres and webcam thingers and all sorts of crap. I don't need any of that, I just want something that's simple and works! Turn it on, check my email, have a look at my facebook, read the news, have a boo at the weather, maybe talk to a buddy on msn for a few minutes, and turn it off again. No wonder these new computers are so powerful, they need it just to run all the junk that's being thrown at you.

Also the newer programs are even worse than the computer! I just got my msn going. It's a new version. Nothing but webcam this, group that, social something or other, share your photos, updates from here, news about that, profile this, and on and on and on. All I wanted to do was talk to some friends for a few minutes while I'm waiting for the dog to come back in!

If I wanted to call someone I woulda picked up the phone. If I wanted to share a photo I woulda emailed them a photo. If I wanted a facebook update I woulda gone to facebook. It's all f-ing junk! Side note I made the groups go away so it is back to just online or offline, but I can't get the list to be single file like it used to. That was clean and simple to read, but now my contacts are spread all over the screen and it's a pain to find one. Anyone know how to fix that?

Rant over.

Anyone else find it annoying all the junk that the new computer programs have? Gadjets and social updates and I swear 36 different programs all offering to share the same photos? My Windows XP with older versions of all these programs was far, far easier to use. Anyone else feel the same?

Dear computer geeks: Please please please bring simple back! There's so many "features" to every little thing now it takes me an hour to figure out how to do anything!

The first thing you do when you get a new mass market PC is re-install Windows.   That takes care of most of the bloatware.

As for your issue with MSN, I suppose that you may be able to downgrade that software to your earlier version. Alternatively, there may be third-party software that functions with MSN's protocol but has its own and simple user interface.

Call me cheap, but when i used to get PCs -before my mac - (shudder at the thought) .. i purposely bought computers that were intended for "business use". True the Hard Drive was usually a tad small, the graphics cards are seldom the best - BUT for my use (email, web browsing, chatting, occasional gaming) they worked perfectly. The best part is that they were loaded with nothing but Windows! No crap-ware or "free trials"

I agree about all the social networking junk. That fad will pass hopefully. I absolutely loathe the networking icon that opens up everytime you simply pass the mouse over it, and then won't close until you click the x. What idiot geek dreamed up that one?

I'll take a wild guess, you bought an HP? They are the worst for junk, I won't consider them after helping friends with theirs. A lot of it can be disabled.

"Crapware" is what's paying for part of your PC. The race to the bottom of the barrel in the PC market has squeezed out almost all of the profits from the actual machine, so especially in the lower-price segment "crapware" is shoveled on new installations so the manufacturers make at least some profit through what is effectively paid advertising.

It is one of several reasons why Macs are more expensive, but also some higher-grade PCs which both come without such preloaded crap.

As the saying goes: You get what you pay for.

It's a Toshiba actually.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I've got a fair bit of the computer's junk out of my way, still working on the programs though (msn, internet explorer, they're almost all worse for junk than the computer was).

I still find the good old Windows XP with some older versions of various programs installed easier to use though. Wasn't quite as fast loading and capable as the new stuff, but far, far easier to use.

Its the Canadian way ... buy a computer with a bunch of crap you don't need and the big box stores will customize/set it up for you .... for a small $100 fee of course

I love Toshiba.

I'm writing this post from one which I bought over 6 years ago and which has faithfully served me until today and hopefully for some time to come as the finances are unfortunately a bit tight for a new A.net accessing machine...

But even back then, the original XP came loaded with a bunch of useless software I had to carefully remove one by one upon getting the PC.

I suspect the same can be done with newer operating systems as I don't suppose all this junk is integrated any deeper into the OS.
As for those increasingly heavy widgets, 'apps' and programs full of redundant functionalities, I hate them as well. They're a waste of processing power and disk storage space. I'm also hoping for a cleaner and leaner approach to software bulding.
In short, I feel your pain, but unfortunately, there's little you can do about it.

Just clean the computer from as much of the collateral as possible and when available, use lighter version of the apps you need...

Interesting you mentioned it's a Toshiba, as I too would have expected it to be an HP. We got my mother in law a Toahiba laptop a few months ago and I was extremely pleased with the lack of crapware preinstalled especially since it came from Best Buy.

Yeah it indeed wasn't as bad as others I've seen for crap trials and whatnot on it, it was more the useless and in some cases almost annoying gadgets and dohickeys of Windows 7; and, as francoflier put it perfectly, how so many newer versions of programs that used to be relatively simple are now full of completely and utterly redundant functionalities.
