What's Your Favorite Holiday?

Thu Dec 08, 2011 7:38 pm

For me, Passover is number one. Family, food, political and social conversations. A time to be aware of how important freedom is.

Forth of July is second. My grandfather always used to read us the Declaration of Independance on the forth, reminding us never to take our freedoms for granted. Our family continues this tradition.

Shabbat is number three.

My favourite holiday is when I take the week off to go to the 24 Hours of Le Mans with my father and brother (my grand-father used to come before he passed away several years ago). From the scruniteering to the qualifications to the race, I enjoy every bit of it.

My second favourite holiday is Christmas.

My favourite holiday?

Every time I am on an airplane heading to somewhere I like.

I am not into these formal holidays, the ones determined by the calendar, religion, history or the government.

I always preferred to create my own.

Thanksgiving and Christmas. We always get together with family during that time of year.

My favorite holidays are Christmas and New Years.. I love the lights and decorations associated with Christmas... and the family tradition of having breakfast at my grandmothers Christmas eve morning and then having Christmas dinner at my parents.... I don't possess many southern attributes, but love love love the home-made buttermilk biscuits with honey and peanut butter my grandmother makes... and the turkey and dressing, candied yams, and sweet potato pie for Christmas dinner.

The main reason I like the two holidays, though, is for the social aspect... My calendar is always full with parties and events the entire month of December... Again, a lot of good food and good times seeing close friends and meeting new people... For me, it's always a month of taking things more slowly and less seriously and to unwind and recoup before starting a new year.

I agree. As a kid, growing up in a Filipino family, Christmas is a BIG deal. In the Philippines, we celebrate Christmas from September to early in January. It's definitely a wonderful time, presents, no class, being with family ,etc. When I was in elementary school, we used to have "Christmas Parties", we do secret santa, bring food, music, etc. It's not required by school law but it is a tradition, we often get out of school two weeks prior to Christmas and a week after New Years.

Now that I'm older and living in the US, I kinda lost that Christmas spirit in me. I really don't care for presents as much as I did when I was younger, I'm just glad I get 10 days off
It's a cultural thing.

Christmas!!! how can you not like having a good excuse to decorate your house/apartment with thousands of lights...the rest of the year I am fairly restrained and only have a few hundred fairy lights up...(yeah I know...pick the poof! LOL)

Ahhh and with LED lights it makes it all the better   hehe also love hitting the beach on a hot summers christmas day, relaxing having cold seafood and ice cold drinks

Second to that has to be Australia Day....its all about BBQs and Beer hehe...just awesome! need I say more LOL

Passover (Pesach) is when we celebrate the freeing of the Israelites from Egyptiona slavery. Moses was a messenger of God sent back to Egypt to free His people. (Moses was born in Egypt, and sent down the Nile by his mother so that he would avoid capture and death -- Jewish babies were killed at the time). Anyway, he told Pharoah to free the slaves, and he refused. God brought on 10 plagues, including locusts, rats, darkness, and finishing with the coming of the Angel of Death, which killed the first born in each household. The Isrealites put sheeps' blood on their doorways to signify an Israelite's household, and to allow the Angel to "passover," sparing that particular household its wrath. Eventually, the Israelites snuck out of Egypt and crossed the Red Sea and eventually made it back to Israel. This is where the Ten Commandments come from, as well as various ethnic foods such as matzoh, come from as well...

Plus, the dinner we have on Passover is the Seder, people would gather at Israelite households for dinner and waited while the Angel of Death passed over.

This from a Christian, by the way; my wife is Jewish.

Aside from that, my favorite holiday is 4th of July. I also love fireworks; I love the crackling, whistling, booming displays of color in the summer night time sky. Other favorites are Christmas and Easter; religious holidays spent with my parents, and I love putting up a Christmas Tree...

Halloween

I love the atmosphere & creepiness! One year we actually went to a pagan event on a hill in Co. Meath, it was very interesting!

Christmas is nice too when you're with good people.
