Finding A Manual Transmission Corvette Rental

Thu Dec 29, 2011 12:09 pm

Hey everyone,

As the title says. I am looking to drive a Corvette during my stay in Florida next month, but all options I find do have automatic transmission. Is this normal or am I looking in the wrong place?

What are my chances of finding a manual gearbox Corvette in Miami for rent? I'm looking for a rental period for 12 days, and prefer to pick up the car in Miami. Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance!

Rgds,

Erik

Back when I worked in the rental car business we had no manual transmissions. It was all about making money. A lot of people, in the USA, can't drive a manual so the car would not be rented as much as one with an automatic. If the car doesn't leave the lot it doesn't make money. Manual trannys also can open the car up to more abuse than even a typical rental car sees.

Have you shopped the exotic car rental places? Many of their cars are manuals so maybe....

Even there I think they make sure that they always get automatic or SMG transmissions to maximize appeal and minimize $10,000 clutch rebuilds.

Shelby and Ford even built a bunch of GT500 Cobra's specifically for Hertz with automatics.

Because we don't know how to drive manual or because we really do have a cowboy mentality when it comes to driving? Manual transmission cars are the norm in Europe and they have no abuse issues.

yep.... Give a gearhead a sports car with a manual and you will get some abuse, especially when they don't own the car. The gearheads I know will go through a clutch and tires in no time. The teens I work with will tear them up to and it has nothing to do with the fact they don't drive a manual, its more of a problem they know it too well.

I must admit that is exactly why I wanted to rent a Corvette, to have some fun while driving. Next to that I hate to have that much horses connected to my rear wheels without being in complete control of how much power they deliver at what moment.

Renting a Corvette automatic for 12 days is going to cost me 1800 dollars, and that is a little too much for a car that is no more fun to drive than a Fiat500. Thank you all for your help, I think I'm now going to try and find myself a BMW 335i.

I think your chances of finding a stick shift Vette to rent, are about zilch; the Beemer sounds like a better idea to me anyway.

I have seriously never understood why so many people have always gone wild over Corvettes. Especially stick shift Corvettes ! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I have probably "driven" several thousand brand new corvettes; each one of them about 250 to 300 ft, from the "lineup", up onto and into my car carrier, where I had to chain them down, take the whole mess to 10 or 12 dealers all over the U.S.

I can guarantee you one thing about manual trans Vettes; if you have to drive them onto, or into a carrier, you will absolutely not like "sticks: And for the 5, 6 or 7 you have to back on, you can multiply that by about 4 ! IMHO........Corvettes are "good" for exactly one thing..............to make a lot of $$$$$ hauling the things; even then, it's not because they pay any more than, say, Yugo's; they don't. They are extremely "tricky" to load and unload, total "pain in the butt" to deliver ( dealers tend to get out the microscope when the Vettes arrive ) but overall, they mostly go a looooong way, and that's where the $$$ come from. I wouldn't have a Corvette if you gave it to me. I'm just not into 'look at me" cars.

Charley

P.S. Erick...............You ever been to Miami before ? That $1,800 rental fee............better factor in another 2K or so for a couple of armed guards, or you're likely gonna be spending much of your vacation explaining to the rental outfit where their Beemer went !

I can agree with that. I love driving stick but in situations like that a slushbox is just so much more convenient.

Thanks for your comments! I suppose the BMW is also a more comfortable option, I intend to drive all the way north to Georgia to visit some places and people. I found to my surprise though it's even more expensive than a Corvette. Guess being a European gives me a distorted view on the car market when visiting the other side of the pond..

Hi Charley, no, I have never been to Miami before and I do not have the intention to stay there for long. Avgeek as I am, I decided to fly through MIA over MCO just so I could fly KLM's MD11, but I will be staying at a place close to Kissimmee, further north.

The last manual transmission rental car that I recall (in the US) was the 1988 Thrifty CSX-T.

Thank you so much for that link, I booked it for one weekend. The rest of the trip will be done in the Beemer  .

My pleasure. That's probably the way to do that. The viper is. It as comfortable or economical for the longer duration, but its a blast for the weekend. Let me know how that company does. I've never used them, and unfortunately tHe exotic car rental places can be hit or miss. Bon voyage
