Star Wars Being Re-released In Theatres In 3D

Thu Jan 05, 2012 7:51 am

Mark your calenders ... Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace is going to be re-released into theaters February 10th ... in 3D

Granted, it is The Phantom Menace but according to various articles I have read, all 6 movies will be re-formatted into 3D and re-released in chronological order.

I've been putting off buying the Star Wars collection on DVD until they came out with a complete box set, now that they finally have in Blu Ray, I was getting ready to buy it but I guess now I'll have to wait a few more years until they come out with a complete box set in 3D ..... curse you George Lucas  http://www.starwars.com/news/episode-i/3d/index.html

I don't know, I think putting the last ones in 3D will remove the awesome 70s-80s look that I enjoy when watching them...

Yay! Now we can see Jar-Jar Binks in all his glory in 3D!!

I don't know if I've ever had the same "what the hell just happened???" feeling as I did right after I first saw Episode I in theaters.

I don't think I would ever buy Star Wars on DVD/Blu-Ray until I could get the movies with the following:

1.) The original Jabba's Palace scene in Jedi without all the extra musical stupidity.
2.) The original Ewok celebratory song.
3.) The original ghost of Anakin Skywalker, not f**king Hayden Christensen.
4.) The original Han-shot-first version of the scene with Greedo. I can't express how horribly stupid the new one is.

I think there were a few others as well.

How many versions are there now? It seems as though the last few years a new version comes out every 2 or 3 years!

This was the very first thing that came to my mind, too. I almost ran screaming from the theater when it occurred to me.

On the one hand, the whole 3d thing appears faddish to me.

on the other, the space air to air combat scenes might be worth seeing.

As awesome as they were when they first came out, it is nice to watch them all cleaned up, however, I don't care for Yoda being CGI in the last 2 movies compared to the traditional puppet. But thats just the way it goes I guess.

I'm not a big fan of the extra "special" scenes myself, they just don't fit in with the movies themselves I feel. It would be nice to get a Blu Ray pack with the original theatrical versions though.

There's only 3 versions (4 if you include the upcoming 3D release). The original Star Wars came out in theatres in 1977 and was re-released as Episode IV in 1978 which was followed by Episodes V and VI. 1997 saw the re-release of the original triology in theatres when it was digitally remastered and had added scences and 1999 saw the start of the prequel triology.

I find it faddish as well, just look at the list of movies coming back as 3Ds, its quite something. But on top of seeing the space scences in 3D, the Death Star skimming scene in Episode IV and the lightsaber battles are gonna be freakin' awesome in 3D LOL!

Offical trailer with release date ..

I believe there are two versions of the Special Editions as well. One that was the new theatrical release from 1997, and then when they came out on DVD (which was after Episodes I, II, and III came out), Mr. Lucas had added some more stuff (like Anakin's ghost being played by Hayden Christensen).

You may have to wait more than a few years, because I've heard that one movie a year is coming to theaters in 3D. So by the time we make it to Return of the Jedi it will be 2017.

I think I'm going to skip Phantom Menace for sure, not sure about 'Clones. I'll probably see 'Sith in 3D and of course all of the original trilogy. So many scenes will be great in 3D. Both Death Star battles, Hoth battle flying between the legs of the Imperial Walkers, speeder bike chase on Endor. The list goes on.
I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

Unless the 3D versions has:
1. No Hayden Christiansen
2. No Jar-Jar Binks
3. No "Hold me like you did in Naboo" line
...it will not be any better than the originals. It's bad enough witnessing those 3 events in 2D.
Now you're really flying

I was just focusing on the theartrical releases, but the DVD releases are ...

2001 - Episode 1
2002 - Episode 2
2004 - Original Trilogy box set (special editon version, remastered and added scenes)
2005 - Episode 3
2006 - Original Trilogy box set (original theatrical version, no added scences and original film quality)
2008 - Original and Prequel Trilogy box sets (nothing new added to either set)
2011 - BluRay box set of all 6 films (first time all 6 in one set) and is also available as two seperate box sets of just the Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy.

I have the original 3 on VHS and Parts I, II and a trilogy boxed set (4 disc) on DVD.

I remember way back when Return of the Jedi was first released one of the older cinemas in Johannesburg with the BIG wide screen had a double header of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back the week before. Great way to pass an afternoon.

I also remember how crap 3-D was when it was around briefly in the 80s (or was it the 70s?). I still haven't seen a modern 3-D movie.

Bringing 3-D to TV might give it some longevity beyond the fad factor.

The whole problem with the 3D thing though is the ridiculous glasses. You mentioned you haven't seen a new 3D movie yet. They vary in quality. Avatar was great in 3D, but others I've seen left me asking why I paid an extra $6 to see the movie in 3D. In the mean time, I've looked at some 3D TVs in the big electronics retailer in this corner of the world. Most demo models have Avatar playing on Bluray. It looks great again, but the glasses are so large and obtrusive and I can't imagine wearing them for 2 hours to watch a movie. I also saw a soccer game ('football' for the rest of you outside the US) but it didn't really pop out as much in 3D. Maybe it would be worth it when they can develop a TV that doesn't require glasses, or at least downsize the glasses enough to make them comfortable.

On that note I have high hopes for Star Wars in 3D. It sounds as if Lucas is taking his time converting them to 3D so I'm sure he'll do it right. Here's hoping they blow me away as much as Avatar's 3D did. Now if Lucas/Spielberg which just hurry up and release the original Indiana Jones Trilogy on Bluray!

Me too - and I don't even have a VCR any more. Guess it's time to get with the program and buy the Blu-Rays.

I'll second that. By far the weakest link in the chain. They really should have quit after the original three and Jedi could have been shortened leaving out a lot of the Ewok-related stuff. Just cheesy IMHO

Sorry George Lucas, no more money from me. Over the past 35 years, you've extracted more dough from my pockets and my parents than I could even possibly try to recall.

No more chicanery from you. You own the films, you can F them up as much as you like, but I'm making the conscious decision to not go along with this crap anymore. The prequels were sh*t, wooden acted, with terrible character and plot development, clumsily delivered, and the changes to the Blu Ray original films are BS too. They're visually stunning and that and the audio remastering is the really wonderful thing, but the content changes are not welcome by most SW fans.

If anyone's seen "The People vs George Lucas" you'll know what I'm talking about.

SW is part of my life and has been since 1977. But the dude has lost his mind. More money grabbing under the guise of creative enhancement. Kiss my ass, George.

Ugh,.... as if old fat neck hasn't already gotten enough money out of the fans. I'm not going to see this re-release. The 3d aspect in this case is purely a marketing gimmick. Fat neck has had enough of my money.
