53rd And 6th- Halal Guys

Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:03 am

For anyone who lives in NYC, or in the new York area, or even anyone who has visited NYC, you must have tried to halal guys chicken and rice, on the corner of 53rd and 6th. I know this is a random thread, but I'm just sitting at home here in long island, craving it! How many of you have been to it?
For those who haven't heard of it, it's pretty much a food cart, that serves a platter of rice, lettuce, and chicken and lamb, (separate or in combo) . It's only $6, and when you add white sauce and hot sauce, it's like you are in heaven. It's open everyday from 7pm-5am, and it's mainly for people who go out clubbing, and need food afterwards. Im only 14, so I've never been there in the middle of the night, but my sister says she once waited for 2 hours for this amazing food!
So tell me, what do you think about it? And how long have you guys waited?

Have not been there - do not eat halal or kosher meat (do not agree with the way the animals are slaughtered) so wouldn't know, and living in NYC I generally avoid the food trucks at all costs (it is bad enough just getting sprayed with the smoke of a kebab that has been sitting in the grill of a cart for 5 days on your way to work and smell of burnt meat the whole day) but even if I was there are very little things in life I would spend two hours in line for (and can't think of any off the top of my head).

I did spend two hours in line for Shake Shack the only time I tried it but that was because it was the first sunny day after a long winter, I was out enjoying it with friends in Madison Square Park and would need to go into work on a Saturday afternoon after I wasn't in a mood to rush it. Still, the food was definitely not worth two hours of my life.
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Been there a couple of times, though not in the past six months. Usually my wait is 15-30 minutes max, if not less. A good (not great) option late at night if you're in midtown only because its operates late at night, but I don't think there's anything overwhelmingly amazing about the place and won't go out of my way to eat there. The location next to the Hilton probably helps their bottom line and reputation, but I can think of better options both amongst late night dining and food carts/trucks.

I have eaten there MANY a time for over a decade. I used to be involved with an organization that had a conference at the Hilton and it was always good for a quick bite to eat. Now you'll have me craving that all day and I just had a kebob sandwich last night on top of that! The white sauce may not be standard tzatziki/cacik but it's good stuff. I was more of a fan of the sandwich than the platter though.
