Armenia Pulls Out From Eurovision Contest 2012

Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:54 pm

Armenia has pulled out of the annual Eurovision song contest due to a dispute with Azerbaijan over a border dispute.

Armenia Pulls Out From Eurovision Contest in Arch-Foe Azerbaijan

Armenia withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s most-watched singing competition, that’s scheduled to be held in May in Baku, the capital of arch- foe Azerbaijan, the organizers said.
“Despite the efforts of the European Broadcasting Union and the host broadcaster to ensure a smooth participation for the Armenian delegation in this year’s contest, circumstances beyond our control led to this unfortunate decision,” Jan Ola Sand, the executive supervisor of the competition, said on the official Eurovision website today.

For one dreadful moment I thought you were going to say that they couldn't face up to the competition from Britain's entrant - Engelbert Humperdinck!

BREAKING NEWS: In retaliation, Azerbaijan has announced their entry into the Eurovision song contest will be "Don't Cry for Me, Armenia!"

Seriously, now, must politics enter into everything? Can't we just have a nice song contest?

Yeah, Eurovision is anything but a song contest. It's a thinly veiled political 'battle'.

It's one of the most politically driven things round. The uk VoiceOver guy who talks while the show is on here always jokes about it.

A bit sad, but Eurovision is nothing more than a political battle- not surprising to see Armenia pull out.

There is always some kind of controversy. The only one I can remember related to this kind of issue is when Morocco wanted to show Adverts on its national network when the Israeli song was on . This broke EBU rules so they pulled out.

I wouldn't call it political per se, people just vote for the countries they're close to culturally, whatever the quality of the music.

Now, corruption is another problem, not particularly political either.

Surely Sir Terry Wogan has godlike status in terms of Eurovision in the UK?   In Australia it's shown with our commentary team then repeated with Sir Terry's.

A little surprised that political ill feeling doesn't openly raise its head more often at Eurovision....

Greece should have also pulled out in my opinion. Unnecessary for a country that is broke to even spend one cent on Eurovision.

I am amazed Eurovision is still followed.

Seems like such a waste of an event so simply wave a flag.

Never understood it,

Indeed he did, but alas, Sir Terry got fed up and stopped, to be replaced by Graham Norton. I've yet to watch the show since he took over, but if anyone's holding an airliners.net Eurovision party...

Well... apart from this song, which got Georgia disqualified from the contest a few years ago on the grounds of political content. Can you spot it?

I hadn't quite caught up with this. Graham is probably the right choice for a Sir Terry replacement though - catty but not as nasty as, say, Julian Clary has become. Our Aussie commentary team (Julia Zemiro and ????) are pretty good though, with the right combination of Eurovision fandom and piss-take.

Subtle work by that Georgian act   They've had some good entries in the past, their 2007 (Sopho) one being the most recent Eurovision song I've purchased.
