Priests To Test World’s Only Paradrop Church

Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:37 pm

Didn't see this posted anywhere, and I believe that it is more suited to the non-av than the military-av forum, so here we go:

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20120307/171825666.html

Quote:
"Priests with the Russian Airborne Troops will take a crash course next week to operate the world’s only paradrop Orthodox Christian church, the military said.
...
The paradrop church comes complete with nonbreakable religious items, a crate to carry them, as well as a diesel generator, air conditioning, refrigerator and a multimedia unit complete with a mini-theater booth and projector, the military said."

But it does not seem to be designed to be paradropped, does it?

Or is it April 1st already?

I guess they will pray that the church survives the paradrop!

In any case, they say all the religious items are non-breakable.

I guess the church and the priests will get a good testing on the first drop.

Then a few thousands years from now somebody will read in an ancient manuscript that in the old days "a church came from heaven and landed on earth". The A.net posters from the 30th century will have a 500 post thread disputing whether there is scientific proof that it really happened and what it meant. Some will say they'll never believe it unless the skies open up and the church appears again from the clouds in front of their eyes and they can test it and measure it, while others will argue that you have to have faith that it really did.

Lenin must be turning in his grave.

But the design looks very practical. The whole thing folds together and and be unbolted and extended at will.

Love the icons. Despite the injunction to create "no graven images" and to "have no gods before me", the Christian Churches have been sponsors and the inspiration of some wonderful artworks.

I can just imagine the priests intoning the Ten Commandments, particularly "thou shalt not kill", before the troops head off into battle.

I can picture it. But fortunately the A.net will have been backed up and available to members. Cue any A.net members in Russia: we want photos of the drop!

Gotta work "gilded dome" into that sentence somewhere!

Such things were common during the Internet boom, when various vendors would show up with one in our parking lot and try to wow us with their latest nerd goodies.

Seems the Muslims were the only ones to take that part seriously.

Cue "Onward Christian Soldiers", a favorite with the military crowd...

Don't followers of the Jewish faith do the same? It is interesting to see how in some countries Jewish culture and Muslim culture has combined in artworks, presenting themes that worship God but using geometric patterns.

That was actually one of the hymns chosen at my grandniece's baptismal and people looked at me oddly when I said, "This sounds like Jihad." I don't hold it against my grandniece who was a babe in arms, nor her mother who said she wasn't expecting that. But really, at a baptismal of an infant? The other one they sang was Stand up for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the Cross."

But I imagine this thing would be sturdy enough to withstand a drop from an aircraft. If it can, I'd like to buy one to travel along some of the roads we have in some of the more remote parts of Western Australia. It would save pitching a tent and survive some of the unmade roads we have.

A church with priests and no parishioners? Who will they preach to on descent? A priest needs not to preach to a priest.

They need to find a number of believers to go with them on their drop off to give it real meaning.

That shouldn't be a problem - the last line of the article says:

Quote:

The number of Orthodox Christians among airborne troops grew 10 percent to reach 90 percent of all paratroopers since last fall, the military said.

Pretty ironic, given that it was Karl Marx who said "Religion is the opium of the people". Lenin and Stalin's well preserved bodies must be rolling over in their graves. I guess there are no atheists in foxholes.
