How Bright Do You Have Your IPhone / IPad Screen?

Sun Mar 25, 2012 9:11 pm

Saw a thread in another site asking this question so thought I would ask it on here too. So at what brightness setting is your screen on? Do you have auto brightness on or off? iPhone or iPad?

On my iPhone, the brightness slider is set to just over the first "s" in the words "Auto-Brightness" below - does just fine by me, and helps keep the battery lasting a long, long time. The auto-brightness is set to ON, by the way.

On my iPhone, my marker is set over the 'h' and the 't'. Works fine by me; gets good battery life. But auto is set to on; it knows if it needs to adjust itself to make it readable... On iPad, I'm at about half.

I have max brightness, auto brightness on....except auto brightness doesn't do a thing, so I dim it if there are no lights on around me

Change it as I go. At night in bed, its all the way dimmed. Walking to class fully bright usually if its sunny outside.

I have it set at about 60% (between the "n" and "e" on "Brightness" on the top bar.

Any brighter and it's painful.

You don't find it blinding?

About 80% with automatic adaptation ON.

Its authority may be limited when the base brightness is already set to maximum. Or your eyes may just been charred by the blazing light…

I've never turned it up all the way, and it works well in varying light. Not too nervously, not too lazily.

50-60% on my iPhone, auto brightness off. I'll usually bring it up to 100% if I'm using it outside for long periods of time when it's sunny.

I remember a friend of mine saying: Do you have your iPhone at full brightness?

I said that no, I don't. He started with "HA-HA! My Android has a better battery than your phone!"

I said: "No, the reason I don't have it to full brightness is this:" and I turned it to full brightness and put it right in his face.

His reaction: "GAAAH! That's bright!"

"Now you know why I don't have the brightness turned up all the way."

LOL that's funny, Doc.

I have my iPhone set to max most of the time with auto turned off. If I'm in a dark environment or if I need extended battery life I'll turn it down a bit.

I find the auto-brightness on the iPhone to be worthless. If you set the brightness for a good level in a dark room (near zero), it doesn't brighten up nearly enough in a bright room. Set it right for a bright room, and it's blinding in a dark room. And the slider is also worthless, as it is hardly gradual and there are really like 3 or 4 brightness levels. Why not just have low, medium, high and blinding settings and leave it at that?

iPad HD isn't much better either.

MacBook Pros are far superior in this regard, with good levels and a decent job of auto adjusting.

Strange. I use it in bright daylight and sometimes in near-total darkness and for me the auto-brightness works very well. They've built in a certain latency, however. When you're on a train, for instance, brightness won't constantly jump up and down, but it will adapt after a while. It's a pretty decent compromise in my view.

I cannot confirm that at all. Both the iPhone 4S and the iPad 3 have at least 64 brightness levels. They are finely enough spaced to make it hard to discern them.

The number of levels is comparable (when set with the slider – via keyboard there are much fewer levels than on the iOS devices), but the auto-adaptation is quicker.

Huge jumps and then infintesimal jumps aren't useful to me, even if they total 64 or so. That's how my iPhone 4 and my old 3GS behaved. iPad is a bit better, but still nothing as fluid as the MacBook Pros have been for me.

None of my devices has "huge jumps" in brightness anywhere. They are all almost completely continuous with barely perceptible steps. The percieved delta per pixel of slider movement can vary somewhat across the whole range, though.

Mine is set about half way between the last S and the on/off slider, with auto-brightness on.

Following my thread on the iPhone vs the Galaxy and my decision to go Apple I am glad to say I have not regretted it once. It's a great device!
