Earth Hour At An Airport?

Sat Mar 31, 2012 3:21 pm

Is there any possibility for turning off unnecessary lights at an airport ? Are there any airports that will celebrate the earth hour today?
The opinions above are solely my own and do not express those of my employers or clients.

Yeah, it seems so.

I cannot believe that people will really switch off all lights. I mean what do they think they do? Save the world?

As I would expect of the dutch - at least those in the city.

My most vivid memory of earthday was when I was a child and we had to go do "something" for earthday. The school bus got stuck.

BTW - we were all being indoctrinated on GLOBAL COOLING. We were being told that by 1990's we would be living in a frozen wasteland because of man's activities causing the globe to cool.

I'm more educated (Ph.D. Engineer) and informed today. If it wasn't so silly I'd celebrate by turning on all my lights for the day. That would be petty tho - so I will just ignore it and continue to do things that make rational and scientific sense. Resource conservation makes sense. Irrational fear mongering based on questionable science does not.

LAX will be turning the lights off on the large 'LAX' letters on the roads leading into the airport.

If these are unnecessary lights, and if turning them off for one day saves energy and reduces the impact on the environment, why don't airports and other entities turning off lights for Earth Day turn off these lights permanently?

I'm at AMS right now, but they only diffused 1/4 of all lights...

Not sure about that, but once they're done feeling good about themselves they certainly will cause a major headache to grid operators all over the world to balance it all out when everything comes back online within couple of minutes.
BTW, has anyone from those participating spared a thought on how much unnecessary CO2 gets released from all those candles?

Back on topic - Earth Hour At An Airport

Changi Airport (Singapore) does it every year.

If you haven't made any plans this Saturday, why not come to Changi Airport? Ice Age 2 will be screened at Terminal 3 check-in row 11. We will also dim the terminal lights at 8.30pm for Earth Hour so you'll have a rare chance to see Changi in a different light! - Melvin

One one hand Dubai builds all those ridiculous monuments of their gluttony like that indoor skislope in the middle of sun-scorched desert or those palms islands ruining entire gulf ecosystem and then they jump this pointless feel-good green bandwagon.
I mean who are they trying to fool they do give a damn about environment?

Excellent point, but then they would have nothing left to turn off to show how much they "care" during these one-off events, would they? It's much more sexy than let's say trying to work out a thought-through plan on how to streamline ground movements so there is not so much jetfuel wasted taxiing.

You may have been indoctrinated, but the vast majority of scientific papers published during the 70s predicted warming.

It's a cult.

They have Earth Hour in Monaco, the place in the world with the biggest number of Ferraris, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Jaguars, Aston Martins... and the most pollution!

Then they brag about how they want to save the environment with less carbon footprint.

Such hypocrits!

Sure.   I hear the global cooling craze was quite the rage back then. You literally couldn't open a newspaper without reading all those apocalyptic global cooling scenarios.

Because the answer to this really is the end-all and be-all of the environmental movement.

From looking at this thread, apparently it gets people thinking about the environment in various ways. That's probably all "they think they do".

Don't worry, I turned everything on to pick up the slack in the grid . Not really. But the thing is this won't make a difference. If you honestly believe turning something off for an hour makes a measurable difference you're crazy. How about you turn lights off when you leave the toom, turn your computer off instead of putting it in sleep mode, etc. I've always done it because my stepdad used to nag me when I left it on. But when you do that you can make a difference. You're using that much less energy! And this is coming from a global warming skeptic!
