UK Governmet To Get Power To Monitor Everyone

What on earth do you make of this? Sounds pretty extreme to me. Powers already exist where crime is suspected. Sems to go way beyond anything reasonable.

Here's hoping this is April Fools'!

Anyway, if not, it seems the Brits are learning from us (Americans).

Of course states that aren't free, e.g. Russia and Belarus, already have such laws. Of course, basically every communist country had/has such laws (for phone calls, etc, if the internet didn't exist).

I'm hoping it's a major troll by the BBC.

If not, then just when we thought Cameron couldn't get any worse...

(And honestly, I wouldn't put it past those bloody Tories. They've arsed up everything else.)

Huh? The Brits have peasant control down far better than our government. I've not (yet) seen us put anybody in jail for an offensive tweet.

No, only some British citizens for "questioning", right? And then not permit them to enter the country.

So what happened to Cameron's opposition to such things? Worse still, the Tea-boys...sorry, Lib Dems?
They did scrap the ID card idea, the whole civil liberties trend much trumpeted before ended there however. One suspects now that was actually about the costs.

David Davis, a more Liberal minded - on some issues at least - Tory MP has attacked this. Though he was a rival to Cameron to be Tory leader in 2005, however he seems sincere on this.

Some reckon this is really about 'officials' wanting this for years, who have been agitating for a long time, when you are essentially a lightweight politically, as most of the Coalition is, they have more chance of getting their way in the end.
Wonder what 'Big Beast' Ken Clarke makes of this, it's partly on his patch.

GCHQ has quite enough power and resources (I'm currently reading an excellent history of that service) - especially with their strong links to the NSA in the US and their resources, to deal with these sorts of threats.
There are plenty of actual Islamist terrorist/plotters, serving long sentences in HM Prisons, often in part due to monitoring by GCHQ.

Sneaking this in, or trying to, will create a shit storm. The government currently is wading in enough of that already.
To paraphrase 'Alex' from A Clockwork Orange , to the Lib dems, 'show us your yarballs, if you've got any....'
