Your Favourite Beer (brand)?

Sun Apr 08, 2012 1:41 am

easy question, specially as we know that aviation enthusiasts normally drink beer (and not only one)

so whats your favourite brew?

My top 5 from the comercials one...

Tegernseer Hofbräuch (all bres)
Erdinger Weissbräu Urweisse
Augustinger Edelstoff
Pilsener Urquell
Weihenstephaner (all brews)

so whats yours?

Cheers

Sorry Avianca, didn't you mean to post this in Non-Av?

As far as my favourite beer is concerned, it's Budweiser. It pays my bills  (mostly)

As far as drinking is concerned, my favourite among our products is Becks (and no, I won't refuse Stella). I like Bass and Boddingtons as well. For a short time we had Spaten on tap in our J. K. Labatt lounge as well, I loved it. Unfortunately, the brand is not available in Canada. Of our Canadian products I prefer the Keith's family, Labatt 50, Kootenay True Ale and the Jockey Club.
Beside that, I like many craft beers, especially with bitterness above 30BU

You know what? I pretty much like them all   Even a cheap swill light beer has its place *occasionally* (like on a hot day on the patio, that's about it).

I've really gotten into homebrewing lately. I am in the process of making my first lager ever. It is almost done (you beer guys will understand: right now at SG 1.015, needs to get a little more towards 1.010 or so). Summer is coming up and I plan on making lots of beer to get me and my neighborhood through the hot days!

Okay, the beer of the week here is: Old Speckled Hen, a good old-fashioned English brew.

Chimay Bleue , Orval, Kwak.... always remember, if it's not Belgian it probably shouldn't be calling itself 'beer' (no, Stella Artois does not count even though it does come from Belgium) .

Why not?

I have had plenty of "fruity" beers which have done the job of drinking the beer in the first place...

In fact, a favorite beer of mine is 21st Amendment's Hell of High Watermelon Wheat Beer. Delicious!

I enjoy hoppy IPA's and my two favorites right now are:

Sculpin IPA by Ballast Point Brewing Co.

And:

Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Co.

I also really like Booya Steez brewed by Port Brewing Co. but it is not a regular brew, more seasonal.

I'm a big fan of white beers (be they German or otherwise) so I'd have to say my top favorites are:

Kronenbourg Blanc ($13.00 for a 6 pack in Ontario..ouch)
and

Blanche de Chamby

Other favorites from the macrobrew selection in Ontario include Sleeman Original Draft and Cream Ale as well as Rickards White. International beers I favor are Grolsch, Erdinger (again a WeissBeer), and Czechvar (the Budweiser of CZ).

I agree with that remark!
No, just kidding, other countries have decent/good beers too, however Belgian beers still remain my favorites though.

Lately, I'm really into Tripel beers of all sort, but for the moment Chimay Tripel is on the no 1 spot right now, followed closely by Bush Amber (it is like 12%, heavy stuff), but it tastes really great!

As for the Lager/Pilsner, there is so much difference in the way it is served (tap, cans, bottles,...) and how long it has been stored (a week or a month), that it tasted sometimes so differently, I really can't pick a favorite one.
I can enjoy a Jupiler/Stella/Primus so much one day, and a couple of days later in another bar it can't really satisfy me. On the end of a hot summer day, give me any decent pils, I'll drink it with a big smile.

The problem with the Czech republic is that they basically reduced the beer to pilsener type lager.

My favorite beer is the one in my hand......

I do have my "go-to" brands:

Sweetwater
Terrapin
Stone
Southern Tier
New Belgium

But I also tend to discover a brand (or finally come across them at a store) and start trying all of their stuff. I found a place here in Atlanta that sells a large selection of Mikkeller (A "phantom" craft brewery out of Denmark, in which they brew all sorts of beers in partnership with other breweries.), and I think I'm in love. Too bad the beers are just so expensive though (Single bottles of some of their stuff starts at $4.99 and top out at over $11.). I honestly never expected this sort of beer out of Denmark. Of course these guys were clearly inspired by the American Craft beer scene, as most of their beers are hoppy IPAs and Imperial/Double IPAs (right in my wheelhouse when it comes to beers). These guys even have a line of "single hop" beers in which one variety of hops is used to brew that beer. That's an interesting idea, as even US craft brewers aren't so bold as to use a single variety of hops and use multiple varieties to balance things out. Another Danish brewery I just recently started to try is Evil Twin.

Quoting golfradio (Reply 7):

I like their Rum Cask and I really loved their Irish Whiskey cask aged Scottish Stout.

Quoting tugger (Reply 18):
Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Co.

That's the #1 beer on my beer wish list, with Bell's Hopslam being #2 (We get Hopslam here, but in such small quantities that stores will tweet or post on Facebook that they have it and it's gone within hours.). I'm meeting up in Vegas with some friends from the L.A. area this Fall and I may have to ask them to pick me up some on the way to Vegas.

My three faves are from microbreweries, and I know of nowhere I can easily acquire all three.

1. Pale Rider - Kelham Island Brewery

2. Bakewell Best Bitter - Peak Ales
3. Belfast Ale - Whitewater

My go-to beer is Molson M. It's a microcarbonated lager that's only been out for about 2 1/2 years now. It is by far the best beer for its price where I live. But if that's not available, I'll go for just about any lager.

Others I enjoy:

Rickard's White (I'm not into beers with fruity undertones, but this one goes down so well when it's hot out)
Carlton, Boags, and Hahn were my main beers when I lived in Australia
Molson Canadian

Also, when I was in Christchurch I had this local brew that was absolutely amazing. The guy who owned the pub told me it was only available locally but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.
Flying refined.

Craft beer tip: For those of you with a Trader Joe's where you live, they sell a beer brand called Mission Street Brewing. It's brewed by a brewery called Steinhaus Brewing, which is actually Firestone Walker Brewing. Their six packs usually run a few dollars cheaper than most craft brews and are pretty decent beers.

I had a lot of favorite beers from the countries I was in while in the Navy on West Pac.
Japan - Karin or Sapporo
Philippines - San Miguel
Thailand - Singha

Those are the ones that stand out in my mind.

There was a beer I had in Australia (not Fosters) that was really good but I cannot remember the name.
Do not remember the names of the beers from Singapore and Korea either but they also had some that were really good.

Here in the states I like Stoney's from Pennsylvania but will usually Drink Miller Genuine Draft and Miller 64 (calorie thing)

I do like to hit the local micro brewerys now and again for some good beer though.

After I few odd conversations in Barcelona bars years ago ("Estrella?" "Yes, I am from Australia!") I learned to love Estrella Damm, but my summer quaffing beer of preference for the last couple of years has been Estrella Galicia. I hadn't tried Moritz (another Barcelona beer) until last night.

Winter has been mostly Budvar, since it's been available in Australia (seriously Annheuser Busch, why does any sane person drink Budweiser anyway?).

But there are many others I enjoy as well as these, for a little variety, or for the right moment. Stiegl, from Austria, at times. If you haven't tried Cooper's Sparkling Ale you've missed agreat beer experience, but the hangovers are brutal (bottle conditioned, 5.7% alcohol). Many decent Aussie pale ales and craft brewers too. Monteiths and Speights from across the dutch are fine too. Then there are the range of beers at my local German club, including Maissels Weisse with pork knuckle on a warm day!!!

Behold one of the great websites of our time, one that can stand tall in the company of such megasites as...Airliners.net:
http://beeradvocate.com/lists/popular

Amen to Pliny the Elder, quite possibly the single greatest beer in all of history. I also love Russian River sours, Supplication makes the top list. Somehow these guys manage to get more fizz into the sours than the Belgians I've tried, which get very flat halfway through the bottle.

Still, full credit to Belgium, they did invent the stuff, and then had the courage to try mayonnaise with their fries. Those two feats alone are worthy of the very best the West has ever gifted to humanity.

If I'm drinking to excess, (which I rarely have a chance to do anymore), then it's Bud Light or Coors Light.

I'm pretty much an import beer drinker, not really a big fan of domestic Canadian beer.

Domestic:

Keith's

Imports:

Stiegl(Austria)
Pilsner Urquell(Czech)
Staropramen(Czech)
Czechvar(also known as Budvar)

I'm sure I could list many more but that's just a sample,it also helps that here in my hometown of Ottawa in our Little Italy section of town there is a great pub called Pub Italia which serves over 200 kinds of beer with 36 of them being on tap. They essentially have what is called a "Beer Bible" to list all the beers.

And now they own Fosters.......

Fits perfectly into their portfolio - undrinkable!!   I haven't seen it available in Australia for ages - its only positive was that it wasn't as bad as the old full strength XXXX.

I had one last year on a flight SYD-HKG on CX ... was not bad but on my trip report was commented that its one of the worst beers in Australia...? really?

Lowenbräu actually is for me by far the worst Munich Brew!

This one for me:

The best of the best. Their abt 8 comes 2nd (and doesn't get you drunk as fast as the 12 does, which is a shame since it is a good advice never to drink more than 2 of the 12's)

Other favourites: Chimay (preferably Bleu Grand Reserve) and Orval. Jupiler is the best pils (but, like somebody already said: with pils there are many factors in play).

And about Czech beers: they really are a different ball game than the Belgian beers. Are they not as good? Probably depends on taste. However, I have tried numerous Czech beers last summer and only found Gambrinus to be passable. Urquell and others are too light, the Belgian pils beers just are stronger in several aspects.

Finally, those special beers, like Abt 12 and Orval are becoming increasingly hard to find in Belgium. This really sucks! And to know that I recently spent a ski vakation on Alpe D'Huez where we found a bar that serves Jupiler, Mardesous, Chouffe and 2 other belgians from the tap, as wel as Abt 12 and Orval bottled. Amazing. Price for an Orval: €8! Since Maredesous from the tap was €3,3, I of course didn't pay that €8.
