When The First Lady Is A Man...

Thu Apr 12, 2012 12:33 am

So, first of all, is the term "First Lady", in reference to the President's wife, an official designation or a colloquialism?

Either way, on that future day when the President of the U.S. is a married woman or a legally-married gay man, what will their male spouse be referred to as?

"First Man"? -- nope, that's a reference to Adam
"First Lord"? -- nope, sounds too regal
"First Spouse"? -- has p.c. possibilities
"First Gentleman"?
"First Husband"?

Any other suggestions?

There have been plenty of female governors and usually the husband is referred to as the "first gentleman" of the state. I don't see why the President would be any different..

If the first female President is Hilary Clinton then she will be Mrs. President and Bill will be called Mr. President - just like he is today.

We have that situation here in Australia at the moment. A female Prime Minister and her partner who we call the first "bloke". I personnally believe she has bigger balls than him the way she has screwed the country, but thats off topic .

If it happens the first Gentleman seem approriate.

Mrs. Merkel is the top executive but not No. 1 in the hirarchy. Still, de facto she is. Her husband has to be carried in chains to an official reception. Seldom participating in anything. He is a Professor and just minding his business. The press leaves him alone and I never heard or read about him referred as first husband or anything.

For the figure head President we have it would be something different., His wife usually has to take responsibilities. I guess the next president could be a woman, we will find out how her hubby does as president of the "Mothers Convalescense Institution".

More pertinently, we have a female Governor-General who in the order of precedence outranks any PM. I thought that it was always wrong to call Mr Howard's wife the First Lady when Howard was PM. She was no such thing. If any one could be styled First Lady it would be the wife of a G-G, not that of a PM, though there is no provision in the Constitution for such a role, style or title.

Here it depends. The wife of previous president Rodriguez Zapatero was off the press radar and seldom appeared in public. It was completely different for the president before him, Mrs. Botella (Aznar's wife) who did not hide she had her own political aspirations (currently she's the mayor of Madrid).

Rajoy's wife seems to keep a low profile as well, though the issue of Rajoy's marriage would need a full thread by itself

yes, but very rare occasions, the yreally have to drag him to these.

Interesting with our new President who is still married to his first wife, abandoned a girl friend in between and now lives with a girl friend who also moved into the official residence. . So, onm future invitations it will read:

The Presdent oif The Federal Republic of Germany, Mr., ..... and Mrs........ take the honor to invite......

I think it is OK for a modern country.

Yep, together with a woman as chancellor, a disabled minister of finance in a wheelchair, a minister of economics with Vietnamese origin and some declared gay politicans like the foreign secretary or the mayor of Berlin.

Why do Americans (or anybody else for that matter) need to have a special designation for the spouse of an elected official ?

For myself, I'd like to see them keep a faily low profile - after all, nobody elected them.

In Canada, the wife of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Harper, stays out of the limelight, in spite of perhaps having a more congenial personality than her husband.

Our previous two Governors-General were women. Both had dildos for husbands. I think every Canadian appreciated that the less was seen of them the better.

While factually this is true, practically, it isn't so much so.

History has shown that Presidents' wives have always played a big part on their persona as it has been seen by the general public.

J.F.K wouldn't have been the same without Jacqueline Kennedy.

And what about Nancy Reagan ? Laura Bush ? Michelle Obama ? Hilary Clinton ?

They have all played a part in that.

The same goes for the much lesser know French president spouses : Bernadette Chirac, for example, has enjoyed great popularity in France at times. Carla Bruni too.

Wives of presidents can go from trophee wives to politically-active wives - but they always play a part in their husband's political career.

My opinion is that willingly or not, we all elect not only a president, but a presidential couple.
Cheers

What if they're not married ? Our possible next president (in a month) isn't married. He has four kids with the 2007 presidential candidate, and lives with a political journalist, but marriage isn't his thing, apparently. Since I don't know when, wives of presidents have been called "première dame", in a blatant imitation of the US usage, but to me it's more a tabloid thing that anything else, and you don't see them prominently during political campaigns. Some have played some charitable role when their husband was in power.

James Buchanan was the only president who never got married, he was also the only president from Pennsylvania.

There were six presidents who were unmarried at the time they entered office. Grover Cleveland married while in office, and Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and Chester Arthur were widowers when they entered office and never remarried.

If you guys think English is bad when naming the first gentleman, Spanish is just as bad. In PR, the first (and so far only) woman governor was elected without being married (she had divorced) so her daughter filled the role of First Lady (an action which was well received among us). However, the governor married during her term and her husband was named all of these:
1. Primer Damo
2. Primer Caballero
3. Primer Hombre
4. Primer Señor

and yet, none of the titles clicked. Basically all of them said the same thing: First Man, First Gentleman...

It was not a concern for RP's first female president as she was a widow. However, the immediate past administration had some image issues regarding the second part of the title with him often in the headlines about one deal or another.

That last question is interesting. We learned after our last presidential election that both main contenders were pretending to have a good and stable relationship going on, when in fact both were in the middle of a separation/divorce.

So I guess they thought being single would handicap them in the race (well, for Sarkozy it seems that he really thought he could keep his wife if he got elected).
