Audi Has Bought Ducati

Audi(i.e. Volkswagen) has bought the Italian motorcycle maker Ducati for €860.000.000. Looks like they desperately want to be BMW.

Both BMW Motorad and Ducati have done surprisingly well in a relatively weak economy. And both have introduced some pretty impressive new product that really broadened their market appeal (S1000RR for BMW and the Diavel for Duc). But the problem for Ducati is that they don't have the deep pockets that BMW Motorad has.

Audi infuses a bunch of cash into Ducati so they can develop a bigger line up of bikes and likely try to move into some of the emerging motorcycle markets in south and southeast Asia. Largely I suspect Duc will be left to its own devices, much like Lamborghini was, but there will be some cross pollination of tech and manufacturing expertise.

That's not correct, Ducati has built up massive debt, it's one of the reasons why they are being sold. Looks like the recent Ducati AMG tie up is now history!

Audi will be a good owner for Ducati, you just have to look at what they have done with Lamborghini, it's in the best financial shape ever, it's got several new models waiting to be launched. It's now (finally) the rival to Ferrari that Ferruccio intended it to be.

German technology (Audi) and Italian style (Lamborghinin and Ducati). What else would you want from life?

Oh Hell Yes!

While I don't own a Duc, I rode a Hypermotard for a day in the North Carolina mountains and it was fantastic, hauled my fat ass around quickly and cornered like it was on rails! Scary powerful!

Best wishes to Audi and Ducati for a successful merger!
