Jony Ive's Designs: Beautiful

Sun Apr 22, 2012 10:30 pm

This thread is just about me expressing my views on the design features from Jony Ive and not a thread about iOS vs android or apple vs Samsung etc. I want others opinions on designs too.

I think the iPhone, iPad and iMac all really stand out as being something different. I particularly love the feel and look of the new iPad. The iPhone also stands out against other smart phones as does the iMac when compared to other all in one computers.

I think Jony Ive has an amazing creative vision and I hope to see his designs for many many more years to come.

Anyone else agree / disagree?

I agree, there are no better looking laptops, PC's or phones than those sold buy Apple, IMO the guy should be knighted.

While I must admit, I had no idea who (or what gender) Jony Ive is, if he came up with the design for the new iMac, I guess I must agree also; I just "invested" about 2K in a new 27 inch iMac, and as far as I'm concerned, the thing is awesome!

My only problem is, the thing is about 1 inch too wide to fit in the opening in my computer desk, where my old 20 inch iMac (which I'm typing this on) has "lived" for the past 8 years; (perhaps if I had still been reading "Mac Life" every month, I would have known about Jony Ive ?)

As I really have no need for a smart phone, I haven't paid any attention to the new iPhones, and as the new iPad is still way down my priority list of things I want / need to buy, I haven't looked at them either, (other than noticing the huge crowd all "milling around" oggeling them at the Apple Store in Indianapolis, when I went to pick up the iMac.

For anyone needing an iPad, (but lacking the necessary "bucks" to buy one ), I will point out, I bought my fiance' a Kindle Fire when they first came out, it does many / most? of the things the iPad does, (albeit the slightly smaller display), and she has used the thing 24/7, ever since she's had it, and loves it dearly. Right now, she's in the hospital having the necessary surgeries to go on kidney dialysis and the Kindle is her "link" to the world, (while her almost new 17in Dell lap top is sitting home gathering dust.) The Kindle Fire is an amazing device considering it's relatively low cost.

And a special tip at the hat to Dieter Rams who, without doubt, has influenced Ive:

Exactly. I was just going to link the Rams vs Apple analysis to this thread as well.

He has been.

Both deliver brilliant products, which requires not only brilliance of the designer, but a level of corporate support normally not found in the corporate world. Ive was exceptionally fortunate to have Steve Job pushing and supporting him. And Ive has also been fortunate to have more advanced technology available, both in terms of tools and in terms of components.

One good indicator of the support Ive has at Apple is shown in this article:

Ive has always acknowledged Rams as a major source of inspiration and Rams considers himself flattered that his design principles have become so popular (again).

Both were/are focused on elegant, simplified designs, reducing a technical device to its purest form. Starting from that, it is unsurprising that there will be superficial similarities.

But when actually using the respective devices you quickly recognize whether form is following function or if it's overriding it.

The success of Braun in earlier years and of Apple today has more to do with providing products which work simply and provide their technological functionality with a minimum of fuss than with sheer ornamental design.

And with the far higher complexity of today's digital products that has become even more challenging than with the much simpler analog ones in earlier decades, so actually managing to create not just a physical design that's nice to look at, but beyond that creating a user interface and usability design that keeps the technical complexity in check, making the device as easy to use as a much simpler analog device – that is extremely challenging and few have managed to really pull it off thus far.

It seems funny that many executives still do not understand how good design lowers cost and can dramatically multiply customer willingness-to-pay. This was Apple's ace. Not their financial planning and analysis. Their wealth came from design. Funny how designers still go without work, right?

While that is often misunderstood as just being about superficial appearance, and that is not how Apple became successful.

The core of it being Jobs' statement: "People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

No. Many designers are utterly incompetent and should be kept as far away from design jobs as possible!
