2012 NHL Play Off Thread

Wed Apr 11, 2012 4:37 am

I guess most Canadians dont care   but its NHL play off time again

As they say, how do you know its spring in Canada? The Leafs are out

Match ups

Flyers vs Pens
Wings vs Preds
Kings vs Canucks
Sens vs Rangers
Caps vs Bruins

My guesses are:

Pens in 6 - just because #87
Preds in 7 - tough call
Canucks in 5 - too good for LA (as long as Schneider plays mostly)
Rangers in 5 - again should be easy but not quite a sweep
Bruins in 6 - head speaking, heart would love to see Ovechkin step up a gear and eliminate those a$$holes  D)

All I have to say is go Rangers! They've got it this year I think. I'm hoping the Penguins go down just because I can't stand Crosby and my buddy is a die hard.

You missed a few match-ups:

Rangers - Senators
Bruins - Capitols
Panthers - Devils
Penguins - Flyers

Canucks - Kings
Blues - Sharks
Coyotes - Blackhawks
Predators - Redwings

I am rooting for my Penguins all the way. Not sure how the rest of the match-ups will turn out though.

Playoffs without the Canadiens are not proper playoffs  .

Anyway, my predictions:

Rangers - Senators: Rangers in 5
Bruins - Capitals: Bruins in 6
Panthers - Devils: Devils in 7
Penguins - Flyers: Penguins in 7

Canucks - Kings: Canucks in 5
Blues - Sharks: Blues in 6
Coyotes - Blackhawks: Chicago in 6
Predators - Redwings: Nashville in 6

I'm really looking forward to Pens v. Flyers. Also, Bruins v. Capitals and Preds v. Redwings should be interesting

Scores from yesterday

Flyers 4 - Pens 3 (Pens took a 3-0 lead and the first Flyers goal was a mile off side and they won it in OT)
Wings 2 - Preds 3
Kings 4 - Canucks 2

Down to earth with a bump for Canuck nation, terrible performance, 2 game suspension for Bitz (rightly so) & Luongo was probably their best player.

The NHL have changed the rules again for the play offs and there are a lot of calls, particularly for charging and snow showers not given in the regular season. Its not like the Preds or Wings to get as many calls... and its no excuse for the Canucks to lose and play so badly, but the refs need to put the whistle away a bit more and it will really irk everybody if they carry on like this but at the same time miss such a blatant off side (Flyers 1st goal).

Three games playing right now, Rangers are whooping the Sens 4 zip, Sharks are 1 up on the Blues and the Caps are tied goalless with the Bruins so far.

Great games thus far IMO. As a Rangers fan it is tough to root for the Flyers but boy do I hate the Penguins. I bet my buddy after the second Bygrz wouldn't lose it for em. He thought he made a safe bet. I won a dinner though    . I was excited to see the Rangers do work and happy the Canucks lost. Get the Sedin sisters out of the playoffs asap.

Coyotes nearly coughed one up tonight - gave up a game-tying goal with literally seconds left on the clock in the 3rd period but managed to survive in OT. Despite being seeded third it still seems like they're the underdog in the series, hopefully they can pull it out after they were swept in the first round last year.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I don't understand why they even have a regular season, they should just start out with the playoffs. Don't more teams make the playoffs than not? Seems they last as long as the regular season, crap, they are still playing ice hockey in June...wake us when it's over.

The problem is: The Canucks are trying to earn The Cup the old fashioned way: by playing. Instead of being an American team and giving the board of governors cash.

Crosby is an embarrassment. All he did all game was run his mouth and start 3 fights that he couldn't finish. I used to be a huge fan of him, but ever since he returned from injury he has been a total disgrace. Captains should never behave like that.

That game had some rough goaltending though. Bylsma and Laviolette must be losing their minds.

I predicted the Penguins in 7, but it looks like it's going to be a sweep from the Flyers...

Out of 164 times, only 3 teams managed to recover from a 3-0 deficit: the Leafs in 1942, the Islanders in 1975 and the Flyers in 2010. It does not give much hope for Pitts.

As disgraceful as the game was, I have to say I'm sick and tired of the league refusing to run the game right. Get the calls right! Period. The tying Briere goal in Game 1 was offside--several calls today were bad. There is no excuse for swallowing your whistle or making a bad call! That has to be one of the craziest games I've ever watched. I'd be surprised if some suspensions don't come from the NHL, especially on the Penguins side. There were some scary shots. Their bench was a ghost town at the end of the game. Though It was entertaining to watch. I just wish someone really would have put Crosby in his place. The refs protected him like a newborn. I wish this Crosby mania will go away. He is a great hockey player, but they make him out to be the best ever. Though it does look like this series will be over soon. I thought for sure it would go to at least 5 or 6 games. But possibly 4 is shocking.

And the Rats are back! Not that I am a big hockey fan but besides for the 12-14,000 people who go to hockey games on a consistent basis in South Florida I do not know anyone who is. Well I do have some Canadian friends from school but they do not have anyone to root for this year.

First playoff win since 1997! Wow that is a long time. It would be great to steal a game in NJ and bring back home ice but I wont get my hopes up. Playoff hockey is great though. I do not watch much during the regular season but if there is a game in the playoffs I am watching it. At least until the NBA playoffs start.

The media sure did. You should have seen his post-game interview. He was incredibly childish. When asked why he pushed away Voracek's glove when he was trying to pick it up, Crosby's answer was "I don't like anybody on that team...I just don't like them". The 11-year old house league kids I used to coach give more mature answers than that! I can't find a good link at the moment, but I'll post if I do find one. It's all over Sportscentre right now.

And I thought Pittsburgh was supposed to be the NHL's "golden franchise." Not that I want preferential treatment, just a fair fight. Canadians wonder why Lemieux called the league a "garage league"? Here's a really good reason why! I'm sorry, Canadians, but the fighting's gotta go--this was not a hockey game, neither was the last game. As long as Buttman and company keep listening to dinosaurs like Cherry and Milbury, this is what they get! I know our defense has been suspect the last few weeks, but please!

Completely forgot Ottawa was in it. As for Vancouver I am aware, watching right now really talking more about east coast as 100% of the Canadians I know are from Montreal or Toronto.

Question:
Do Montreal, Edmonton Toronto etc.. or really any Canadian team fan root for Ottawa or Vancouver or is it more of a dislike for those rival teams and rather see a US team win? Or it really depends on which team I imagine.

Very entertaining game today. Asham is definitely going to be getting a phone call from Mr. Shanahan, and I believe he will be suspended for that hit. I personally thought Crosby acted like a complete punk today, and he did not earn my respect. Basically what happened today was Philly was way more disciplined than Pittsburgh. I thought this series was going to go seven, and I am shocked that Philly is up 3-0. I didn't think the reffing in Game 3 was that bad, other than not handing a misconduct penalty late in the game, which led to the hair pulling incident.

Here are my predictions for the rest of the series.

Philly will win, just not convinced it will be a sweep yet.
Rangers over Ottawa in six.
Bruins over Washington in 7. With the low scoring nature of the series, it favors Boston in the long run.
NJ over Florida in 6.

Nashville over Detroit in 7
LA over Vancouver in 6
St. Louis over San Jose in 7
Chicago over Phoenix in 6

If my predictions hold true, the Rangers and the Devils have some bad blood going back to the regular season, which should make that an entertaining game. The Bruins and the Flyers had some very good games in the regular season as well. In the west, that would leave St. Louis vs LA, and then Chicago vs Nashville. Those will be great series, though not as great as the eastern series you will get.

It's not an issue of whether fighting should be allowed or not. It's an issue of all these kids coming into the league thinking they're tough. In my opinion, fighting should be left to the fighters.

Doesn't have much to do with nationality. Canadian fans just hate other Canadian teams out of rivalry. I'm a Montreal fan, and if Toronto was the only team left in the playoffs (not likely to happen anytime soon) I doubt I would cheer for them.

Sorry but that's way off. A very high majority of concussions and head injuries in hockey are related to hits to the head (charging, boarding, elbowing, etc), not from fighting.

Doesn't matter. If you want to keep players safe, start by banning fighting. These guys get paid way too much to let them be hitting each other in the head outside of the game.

This was mentioned tonight on one of our Sunday night sports shows here in Philly. Pittsburgh is an older, and presumably more mature team, whereas this Flyers team has a lot of rookies, so you'd expect them to want to prove their stuff. The opposite is happening. As a Flyers Fan, it is great to watch us totally dominate our instate rivals...both in character and on the ice.

I would post my opinion of Sidney Crosby, but I don't want to be banned for some of the words I'd use.

Canucks lost again tonight. They're 3-0 down, on the verge of being swept by LA. Jonathan Quick has been quite remarkable tonight, stopping 41 shots.

But only 9 / 41 caused him to actually move... shocking, lots of calls in Canuck nation for Vigneault to go today. Dont really agree, its up to the players, as one of the radio commenters said today, they need to learn to stop being chihuahua's and be doberman's - hole in one!

Agree. They need to get their attack back on track. I heard Daniel Sedin might play game 4. I don't know if it's reasonable for him, but it shows how desperate the situation is in Vancouver right now.

Otherwise, I watched the Rangers-Sens game tonight. It was really a great game, despite the low score. The Sens deserved better, but Lundqvist has been imperial again.

I also love the playoffs atmosphere. The crowd of Scotiabank place was amazing.

Preds up 3-1. Wings age finally caught up to them?? Looking for an electric crowd at the Tire Barn in Nashville Friday to finish them off.

The NHL should be ashamed and embarrassed after the last few days. Brendan Shanahan is an idiot and should resign immediately, having been incompetent enough to accidentally give Shea Weber's three game suspension to Andrew Shaw. The least he should do is give finish Raffi Torres' season as a parting shot.

Blues vs Sharks finishes 4-3 yesterday

Three more today

Panthers 4 vs Devils 3
Preds 3 vs Wings 1
Coyotes 3 vs Hawks 2

So in the west

Los Angeles Kings lead series 3-0 over Vancouver Canucks
St Louis Blues lead series 2-1 over San Jose Sharks
Phoenix Coyotes lease series 2-1 over Chicago Blackhawks
Nashville Predators lead series 4-1 over Detroit Redwings

In the east

New York Rangers lead the series 2-1 over Ottawa Senators
Boston Bruins lead the series 2-1 over Washington Capitals
Florida Panthers lead the series 2-1 over New Jersey Devils
Philadelphia Flyers lead the series 3-0 over Pittsburgh Penguins

There have been some great games and hockey, but its a shame they have been somewhat overshadowed by thugish behavior & resulting incompetency from the league.

Quoting GrahamHill (Reply 34):
I heard Daniel Sedin might play game 4. I don't know if it's reasonable for him, but it shows how desperate the situation is in Vancouver right now.

He said he would not play unless he felt 100%, and seems hes been OK for a week, but he is not match fit - could see some much needed PP cameos, will be a physcological boost, but probably too little too late. At the end of the day, if you cant beat 8th seed LA, albeit much improved with the new coach, how do you expect to progress past Nashville, Phoenix, Boston or anyone for that matter?!

Agree entirely Weber should have gotten Shaw's three games; what Weber did to Zetterberg wasn't a hockey play. For Shaw, Smith naturally went down, but if four or five doctors have to come out on the ice, Smith should have been pulled. Instead, Smith finished the game without incident and has now won two games. In the case of Weber, Shanahan's rationale was that Zetterberg wasn't hurt. Shouldn't that same rationale prevail for Shaw, which appeared to be somewhat accidental? So, is it about the action? The injury? Or the star-status of the player involved?

Neal was given one game this morning for his two hits against Philadelphia in a game that was more of a wrestling match than a hockey game, and that's as a repeat offender. Neal should have gotten two, bare minimum, one game minimum for each hit. Asham, rightfully so, got four games, and Backstrom got one.

Nothing yet known on Torres, but Shanahan has to throw the book at him, a multiple repeat offender who left his feet and gave Hossa a late and direct hit to the head, which possibly took him out of the series. Torres has a lengthy discipline history, so I hope and suspect that Shanahan will not be lenient.

I have never been so livid leaving a game as I was last night. Torres is a scumbag who has now gotten away with cheap headhits on my team TWICE (exactly a year apart go figure) with an average of 1 penalty minute between them. If Shanahan doesn't throw everything he has at him, I'm done with this joke of a league.
It's time for them to draw a line in the sand with repeat offenders like him and let them know without a doubt if they don't turn things around they will be gone for good, but Shanahan clearly doesn't have the balls for it. As it stands right now, when they "made of example" of Matt Cooke last year the only person in the entire league who actually got the message was Matt Cooke. 17 game suspension and he has completely changed his game, and it wasn't just him saying "oh well I won't elbow people in the head anymore" it was he had to work the entire offseason practically relearning his entire playing style and he should be given all the credit that's left in the league for it. With what Shanahan has been doing all season: 1 game here, 3 games there, even the occasional 5+....all with absolutely no consistency, it's not enough to get it through anyone's head and convince them to change, but he won't man up and dish out the punishments that need to be dished out on people like Torres.
But what pissed me off more than anything was finding out after I had left that Bettman was actually there, and that basically just shrugged off the hit like it was nothing. I had joked at the beginning of the series that he had some conspiracy going to make the Coyotes win and I'm actually starting to believe it along with everyone I was sitting around. The horrible officiating, doing nothing about Smith's now multiple Oscar worthy performances, and not even acting concerned when one of the league's best players get sent off in a stretcher. It's a disgrace and the sooner someone finally outs him the better everything will be. As much as I hate to say it, they need another lockout to get their act together before someone gets killed.

At least he has more balls than the last guy. Campbell would rather drop a big fine and let the guy play the next day than to actually make him sit.

Are you they should both get suspensions, or that Weber should and Shaw shouldn't? Because Shaw absolutely deserved that suspension.

Shanahan only suspended Neal to make an example out of that embarrassment of a game. Under normal circumstances I don't think anything would have happened to Neal. I watched it live, and then again on Youtube, and although the hits were unnecessary, they definitely weren't bad enough to warrant this punishment.

You've got to be kidding me elbandgeek. I've been a goaltender since I was 6, I've been run at more times than I can count, and I can assure you that Smith was not acting on that hit from Shaw. He deserved those 3 games.

As they say, how do you know its spring in Canada? The Leafs are out

Aren't the Leafs officially eliminated after training camp ?

Quoting YVRLTN (Thread starter):
Canucks in 5 - too good for LA (as long as Schneider plays mostly)

Well, that's certainly not going to happen. Jonathan Quick is out tending Luongo/Schneider. Canucks scorers have gone silent.

Quoting YVRLTN (Thread starter):
Pens in 6 - just because #87

Also not going to happen.

Quoting jetblueguy22 (Reply 1):
All I have to say is go Rangers! They've got it this year I think

Rangers play a very solid defensive game and have Lundqvist is the nets. Difficult to get to the net.

Quoting YVRLTN (Reply 5):
but the refs need to put the whistle away a bit more

As far as I can recall, this has been the worst refereeing in the playoffs, ever. Many blown calls or non-calls, or incorrect calls.

First of all, he should have not been allowed back in the net at all because of concussion protocol and yet he was perfectly "fine" to keep playing immediately after Shaw was ejected and not a second earlier. Then yesterday he was a "game time decision" up until the suspension ruling was announced. Don't even try to tell me he wasn't putting on a show. I'll admit Shaw could have been more careful but it was completely accidental contact, which if you watch in slow motion, was barely a tap that had him flailing all over the ice, and was not even close to worth 3 games except Shanahan decided to overcompensate for completely botching the Weber situation and chose Shaw as his sacrificial lamb because he's not a superstar and figured he wouldn't get called out on it.

No he didn't. He deserved a penalty for goaltender interference, and that's it. The contact was incidental. Look at the tape: he didn't lower the shoulder or aim for Smith's head. He just skated around the net and collided with him.

There's the front view of the hit and you can clearly see Shaw attempting to skate through the gap between Smith and the end boards - not aiming at Smith's body at all. The camera behind the glass clearly shows that it was a glancing blow - hardly a hit at all, let alone a dirty hit with intent to injure.

Ok, let's explore this. By your logic, the time I was cross-checked in the throat by an opposing player and went, I should have been immediately pulled from the game, despite being temporarily winded. I don't know your sports history, but it doesn't take a pro athlete to know that you can be hurting for a minute or two and still be able to perform the remainder of the game after catching a breather. It's more than likely that Smith pinched something or got the wind knocked out of him and needed a minute on the ice to gather himself. I've had to do this dozens of times.

Quoting BMI727 (Reply 45):

I'm looking at Shanny's video over and over again and I keep seeing the same thing: Shaw's shoulder making contact with Smith's helmet. Here is the video. Please pay special attention to the clips at 0:32-0:40 and 1:10-1:17. And obviously he didn't lower the should, Smith was standing straight up.

Quoting BMI727 (Reply 45):

Exactly! He collided with him! There was no attempt to avoid contact (aka stopping).

You know, I looked at this play a million times. There was nothing Torres could've done to slow down. He was traveling way too fast to try to get the puck, which was his fault, but suspending him is really just not the way to go.

The NHL really has its head up their ass right now with these suspensions. Let the dang players play!

If anybody should be suspended, it should be both the entire Pens and Flyers teams for their complete classlessness. Pathetic.

Yeah the worst feeling in the world is to get clocked like Smith was when trying to send a puck out from behind the net. I was taken to the hospital once with head injuries from a similar hit when I was a senior in HS.

Interesting article on www.cbc.ca today: City of Markham (north side of TO) to vote on the 26th whether or not to build a $300M 20,000 seat arena/entertainment centre. That could clear the way for the Islanders to move to Toronto. Bettman has told the Leafs there would be no compensation. Building to be ready no later than 2015 - which is when the Isles lease run out.

There are a bunch of articles floating around about how Shanahan is trying to "make up" for the fine for the hit on Zetterberg

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...han-is-making-up-for-past-mistakes

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...ride-unleashed-wave-154806457.html

http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/stor...a-penguin-flyers-2012-nhl-playoffs

http://arizona.sbnation.com/phoenix-...es-and-why-the-nhl-should-keep-the

Just a sample. From what I have been reading today, a lot of the articles seem to center around a consistent theme:

When Shanahan didn't suspend Weber, it gave a signal to the rest of the NHL that hits like that will only get a fine. And now he is trying to re-assert his authority with the rash of suspensions.
-----

I find it interesting that the max fine as defined by the CBA is only $2,500 which is really low when the entry level contract in the NHL is around 400,000. I am a Red Wings fan, and remember when Shanahan was a star in Hockeytown; but this has gotten out of hand. He shouldn't use how severe the injury is to the player as the measuring stick to determine if and how long to suspend someone. Hopefully players are getting the message and things will clean up a bit in Round 2.
