I'm almost surely in a totally different "situation" than anyone else on A.net; For over 40 years, I was on the road most of the time; for the last 25 years I worked, I hauled new cars all over the U.S. and because cars take up so much space on a car carrier, there is no room for a sleeper cab, so the company sets up charge accounts with hotel chains, and you get to sleep in a real bed every night, rather than a damn sleeper cab. Hotels have big advantages,and a few "disadvantages".
Almost all big motels have live music, and as we all know, live music "draws" women from hither and yon ! And a lot of them are not "in any hurry" to rush home after the bar / music shuts down; the disadvantage of this is, if you are "into" earning maximum bucks, you do do that by getting up at 4 AM
, and getting 600 miles down the road before you go back to bed; that's hard to do if you spend 3 or 4 hours "entertaining company" before going to sleep at 3 or 4 AM
! (That usually causes sleeping till 11 AM
, so you don't get so far that day ! Anyway, all of that came to a screeching halt in 1997 when I retired from working. I did some serious traveling around the U.S. for a year or so, but after a while, the then wife and I decided to go our separate ways; partly because we owned about 5 houses at the time, we didn't get divorced; I stayed in the original house, (which I liked back then), and she moved into another house, about 6 miles away; That lasted about a year, until i got incredibly lucky one day, and "bumped into" this lady on of all places, the internet ! (She lived 200 miles away, so I wasn't worried about "getting involved"
for almost a year, it was no problem, as she is extremely intelligent, is loads of fun to communicate with, and we had a lovely time just "communicating"; but as always seems to happen, we both finally became "curious", and I drove the 200 miles to visit her; it's now 10 years later, and I'm still "here" ! We have been engaged for about 9 years now, and after a suitable time to "get acquainted", we have finally decided to change her last name to mine, this coming December 23. I haven't checked yet to see what day of the week the 23rd falls on yet, but it's of no importance anyway, as it's going to be a very brief "ceremony".
To answer to the OP's original question, I very seldom travel very far without Miss Arlie; she likes to go to Vegas a couple of times a year, so she usually flies out with her lady friend, and they have a ball playing the slots for 3 or 4 days, then it's back to IND
to meet the plane and bring them back home. I only like to go to Vegas about once every 2 or 3 years; and even then, we seldom stay in Vegas, other than to sleep.
We love to go to Florida together; the only problem there is, I'm very much "into" nature, and I am fond of poking around in a big swamp, photographing the birds, alligators, snakes, and the "flora"; Miss Arlie is NOT into getting more than two feet from the truck, because she's deathly afraid of wild creatures ! I know of this gravel "trail" in the Everglades where you can see 100 alligators in 5 miles; they're laying all over the place ! At one wide spot, I stopped and got out to photograph a beautiful white Ibis, and there were 3 or 4 alligators lying near by; one was much bigger than the rest.........about 8 or 9 feet; I got some nice close ups of him / her, ( you gotta turn 'em over to tell the difference), and for some reason, I decided to grab his tail and see what he would do; Miss Arlie has her camera ready, only she's not concentrating on getting the shot, she's worried about the big alligator trying to eat me ! (I should probably mention, I have been around all manner of alligators, crocodiles, and snakes for years and years, and I'm pretty confident in my "ability" to deal with them safely; ) anyway, when I grabbed the alligators tail, he IMMEDIATELY decided to jump into the water; I had a VERY firm grip on his tail though, so he's in 4 wheel drive, trying to get traction with all four feet, kicking up sand all over the place, and it was all I could do to hold my ground; I should probably mention here, I strongly advise anyone reading this, DO
NOT, under any circumstances, ever attempt to grab even a 3 ft alligator by the tail; if it's a 6 or 7 footer, DON"T get closer than 15 feet or so; if he's as big as this one was,........stay in the truck ! Alligators may look sluggish and slow, because they only move fast when they are trying to catch something they want to eat; at which point, they are about as "slow" as a mongoose ! Anyway, Miss Arlie gets all excited, snaps the damned shutter, and get's everything but my head in the shot ! In retrospect, I should never have done what I did, with that big of an alligator;
I may drive to Cincinnati for a day or two to cut a tree down for my ex, or visit my daughters, but other than that, where ever I go, Miss Arlie is with me. And December 23rd.............it's my 80th birthday, and how many guys have you known that get hitched on their 80th birthday ?
