Do You Place Bumper Stickers On Your Car?

Tue May 08, 2012 12:31 am

Do you put bumper stickers on your car and if you do, what do you have?

I myself do not have any bumper stickers on my car. I see most bumper stickers other than a AAA sticker as just tacky particularly with a new car. The two worst kinds for me are political stickers, even the ones that support the candidates that I like and the ever present "student of the year at ____ academy", one person had four stickers covering the back window of the minivan that I saw.

I prefer not to. I do have an MIT sticker on the back window (my friends and I in high school all bought each other car stickers when we got into college) and an AOPA one on the side window though

I like to leave the styling of the car unblemished as much as I can. That said, if you have an ugly POS anyway, go for it!

I couldn't agree more. Bumper stickers are beyond tacky. Cars are some of the biggest purchases you will ever make, why would you taint it with a pointless sticker? Even though I hate all bumper stickers, I won't give any grief over political affiliations or proud parents, but it's the ones that have stupid "jokes" or sayings on them that boil my blood. They're never funny and look awful!

Though not the bumper, I can't stand these...

And the only thing I've allowed on my car is a simple alumni sticker from my alma mater.

Ages ago, I had only one bumper sticker. This was at the time (80s) when you saw all those cutesy stickers like "I brake for children", "I brake for Animals", and the ubiquitous "Baby on Board".

Mine read "I brake for Hallucinations"

Since then I stopped using them, as they mess up your paint.

No. They look stupid, cheap and trashy. There is likely no worse way for one person to communicate with their fellow people. Also, any guy with truck nuts should be kicked in the real nuts.

I saw one the other day, I thought I knew what it meant, then I looked it up and I was right. It's a picture of a hand with the ring finger bent over...look up 'shocker' on Wiki if you don't know what I mean.

I'm not easily offended, but I seriously questioned why anyone would want to put that on their car. Disgraceful.

I guess I'll have to put a picture of my fiancee's new Cube on here; Cube's don't have bumpers though, and I sure wouldn't put some "sticky" sticker on the back window. As I bought the Cube for her as her Valentine, I really had to give her some way to "announce the fact"; as I do graphic design as a hobby, I designed a big 12" X 12" valentine with two big red hearts, with TO: and FROM: top and bottom, printed it twice on vinyl sign film, then bonded the films to two 12" square pieces of 1/8 in. sign magnet material (which I usually always have laying around) On valentine's day, I got up early, washed the Cube, and stuck a magnet on each front door, then parked the Cube in the front yard. Needless to say, my sweetie was tickled pink with her "valentine". (She especially enjoyed "showing it off" on her FB page!)

Here's the "unintended part"..............as she started driving around town in her "Valentine Cube", people started asking questions, like where she got the magnets, etc; so after a week or so, I made one more sign and put it under the one on the right door; "Custom Magnet Door Signs"
Your Choice, We Design
Email....................
I only put that one on the door occasionally when we go to Terre Haute, and then only 8 or 9 times.

So far I've sold about 18 more door signs.

The whole trick to having a sign on your car is to have one that other people like, think is "cute", and can "identify with"
every time I notice someone looking at her valentine signs, they're always smiling, and not one person has shown any displeasure or made any negative comments.

Haha, I saw one of those for the first time yesterday...and another one that was a big hand grenade on a truck's back window. Makes you wonder what the hell is wrong with people.

Seems like many stickers are about making the driver feel superior in some way. People just have to stand out somehow.

Unreal, are we supposed to be impressed or feel sorry for somebody based on these things?

You'd blend right in!

Here in Colorado I see a lot of stickers that say 'nobody cares that you tele' (a reference to the notion that telemark skiers think that they're superior). Funny. I then saw one a couple of weeks ago saying 'nobody cares that I tele'. Ha, at least he understands!

True, but a lot of people do do a lot of bragging. Look up the word 'blowhard' on the internet, you'll see a specific example of a blowhard is 'one who has bumper stickers on his car saying how great his children are'.

Another sticker I can't stand is one that simply says '26.2' - I guess it's just saying that 'I run marathons'. Great, congratulations. Now get out of my way.

I have 3 (though they're more decals than bumper stickers):
-one that says ICOM Inside (like the Intel logo, ICOM=Computer Engineering)
-one that says Colegio (the UPRM's old name)
-one that has the design of the Interstate route signs but with a paw print (our mascot is a bulldog)
-If you count the parking permits for each year of college, I have 3 from the UPRM and one from UPRB.

Others I was planning on adding or had in the past:
-One back when Bush was president that said Buck Fush, but it's meaningless today.
-During the 2008 Democrat primaries, I supported Hillary. Her campaign sent me one.
-I had one on my previous car that said: Retired, I was tired yesterday and I'm tired again today.
-Also on the same car, I had a decal with a bowling ball and a pin that said "Boleador boricua".

I'm not one to add dozens of bumper stickers or decals, but a bit of personality on a car doesn't hurt anybody.

No bumper stickers for me.

And one of my biggest pet peeves is the big American Flag.......on an imported car!! One of my neighbors has American flags flying from his car windows, stickers all over the place.......and he has four Hondas!

Thank you, I will keep my General Motors cars, which I've had for decades with no problems, and leave the stickers in the drawer.

Bumper stickers are unheard of here, they're all on the glass or the rear door (or course, sedans are rare too). Also, nobody would think of putting their high school or college on their car. The most common one I see is this one :

It means someone is attached to the island of Corsica. They're very common around here, as the suburbs of Paris are full of immigrants from the world but also from the rest of the country. Another common one is to show you're from Brittany :

Again a lot of people here in the west of Paris come from there, including my father.

I wouldn't put a sticker on a car I bought, but I got my car from my parents with two small ones and I left them. They're on each side of the rear windshield, where the glass is over the interior of the car, so they don't hamper visibility.

One is a triskelion because it's nice and a different way of showing you have a Celtic background, without separatist connotations :

The other one is a sticker showing support to the SNSM, the National Society for Sea Rescue, an NGO that intervenes in about half the rescue operations on the French coasts. My father is a sailor and taught sailing in his youth, so sea rescue is close to his heart.

Also, the regulations recently changed for the license plates here, the alphanumerical ID has become national instead of local, so the département number is no longer part of the ID. Instead, it's put in small at the right hand of the plate, with a small image of the region. But the catch is that you can put any number and corresponding region, no matter where your live, so when I registered the car to my name I chose 974, for the Réunion island. A place I've never been to, but that I find inspiring, and the logo is nicer than the one for the Ile-de-France region. And at least when I'm outside of my region, nobody will call me "ugly Parisian".

Whenever I saw that symbol (usually on crappy old french cars) I was always tempted to ask the person if he knows what it means.

It's kind of like driving around Europe with a swastika on your car. You may think it means good luck from the old Hindu usage, but it unfortunately has come to mean other things.

He has an army strong bumper sticker, a Boston Bruins bumper sticker (which is being removed as soon as I get home) on the window, and a Hartford Whalers sticker. I'm getting a big UND Fighting Sioux Head decal to put on the rear window. Have to support my school, and it looks cool!

No.

During my first job out of college when I was doing a lot of hiring, my boss gave me a sage piece of advice. He told me when a job seeker pulls into our parking lot, take a good look at their car. It can be old, new, dirty or clean--but pay special attention to the back end. If he/she has a lot of bumper stickers, be warned--they're very opinionated people, their opinion is always right, and they're not afraid to tell you (and others) about it.

By george, he sure was right.

That and they're tacky.

I forgot all about this until today;

I bought my 1 ton, dual wheel diesel P/U truck in 2003; about a year later, I more or less moved to western Indiana; shortly after coming to Indiana, I bought a Lucas Mill; (a portable saw mill made in Australia) The saw mill is designed to be able to take apart, and load all of the component parts on a P/U truck, so as to be able to move it about easily, then put it back together quickly; it's really a great machine, however, it has two parts that require some "thought" to transport;

The "side rails"; each side rail is an aluminum extrusion, 20 ft. long, 4 in X 10 in rectangular tube; each one weighs about 75 lbs.
No problem for two men to carry, or load and unload; however, here's the "problem"; they are perfectly straight; if you get one bent, or otherwise damaged, it becomes "scrap aluminum"; ( and a new rail costs about $ 2,250, USD.) Also, because of the terrible economy in the U.S., there is a HUGE amount of people stealing anything made of aluminum, copper or brass, and selling it for scrap. Taking all of this into account when I first bought my mill, I resolved to take VERY GOOD CARE of my aluminum rails ! I was thinking, "I don't want to be driving around with all of that new, shiny aluminum on my special platform I built on top of my truck, from the front bumper, to the back bumper. So, my very first "project" when I first set the mill up was, I had a 22 ft poplar log, sawed it up into 1 in X 6 in boards, all 20 ft long; then I constructed a 20 ft long box, 12" in x 12"; I made it with 4 separate hinged doors on the top of the box, (which can be locked with just one pad lock). the front end is solid, and the back end hinges down, the rails are loaded in the back end, the door is then raised and locked;

I worked on the thing for 3 or 4 days, got it all done, mounted on top of the truck, and I stood back to admire my "one of a kind" big long wooden box; As the truck is bright red, I decided that the box should be red also; I gave the thing a couple of coats of red paint, and again, stood back to "admire" my work. And I'm thinking, "if I leave this thing on when we drive down to Florida, it doesn't weigh very much, and I'll have over 20 cu. ft. of perfectly good cargo space...........but then everyone on the interstate is going to see this truck going down the road, with this 20 ft long box bolted to my custom designed and built racks, and they are going to go crazy wondering what in the hell would anyone carry in such a box ?

It took me all of two minutes to get my "inspiration" ! back when I was in my 30's or so, I was very interested in reptiles; I always had a bunch of various kinds of snakes, lizards, alligators, even one very rare species of crocodile once; a good friend of mine had 10 times as many reptiles at all times, and for a few years, he had this huge big 16 ft long Burmese python; burmese are usually quite "docile", (as compared to reticulated or rock pythons), (but don't let them get hungry) and when we moved the big python around, it took like 3 or 4 guys to pick it up and load it into the back end of an old station wagon. Then it took the same 4 guys to keep the thing from crawling up front, etc. (not a good way to transport a python, for sure)

Anyway, I decided to paint a sign down the length of my big long wooden box; "Queen City Pythons & Boas", Cincinnati, Ohio

It was a great idea, but after hauling the box around for a month or so, and still not ready to go to Florida yet, (and after a month of wasting a few hours every day answering questions ).........(or refusing to answer questions, ), the novelty of the idea kinda wore off, so I took the box off the truck and bolted it to the back side of my garage; Makes a secure place to store my side rails when I don't need them. I have often wondered what I would have run into if I had hauled that box to Florida and back ? ( about 2,000 miles) Back then, diesel fuel was like $ 1.75 / gallon; now it's $ 4.00 / a gallon

Now when I go to Florida, I'll probably either fly or drive the Cube !

I dislike bumper stickers, but I do have a gobadge, well a selection of them actually.

I don't put any on my good car, but on my old sad truck I have plenty. Mostly right wing stuff, as you can see. I would like to find an Obama decal that says left and put on the left side of my tailgate. The spark decal on the far left is the Wal-Mart logo. I picked up that gem at the Wal-Mart museum in Bentonville, Arkansas last summer.

And one of my biggest pet peeves is the big American Flag.......on an imported car!!

I have seen some that are worse. I was behind a van once that had a Buy American sticker on it right next to a Yamaha Racing decal....

I really hate those "In memory of" decals people put in their back windows. Around my area you see that a lot on worthless rusted junk. First off a car/truck isn't something that is an appropriate memorial and is your rusted out 95' Ford Explorer the best way to remember you dead family members?

He told me when a job seeker pulls into our parking lot, take a good look at their car.

I have heard that it is best to know your audience...

Very true. About 10 years ago, at my previous employer, we interviewed a woman for a teaching position. I happened to be in the parking lot when she pulled in and noticed the dozen or so stickers on her car that had something to do with witches, most of which were rather weird. I said something about it to the boss and guess what; she didn't get the job. I wouldn't drive my old beater to a job interview anyway, it might break down. I have also heard about people looking inside the car, a messy and disorganized car likely means the person is the same way. It is easy to do if you walk the interviewee out to the parking lot.

Another sticker I can't stand is one that simply says '26.2' - I guess it's just saying that 'I run marathons'

I had no idea what that meant. I hate that now too.

Looks like my kind of guy! After Obama is out of office he'll have a lot of work to do getting those off. I only have one anti Obama sticker, so I'll have a lot less work on my hands.

A friend of mine's daughter had about that many anti Bush stickers on her junk Ford Escort. After he left office she had to peal them all off and replace them with other goofy leftist stickers.

I keep seeing that thing online, but never in real life. I wonder how many are really out there. That thing looks photo shopped to begin with.

Don't worry it goes both ways. I saw a few stickers in Inkster, Michigan, in 2008 that said "Don't vote for the white guy".

I only put a sticker or decal on a car if it goes nicely with the car's shape and curves. For an older 80s or 90s car, your standard square bumper sticker or decal doesn't detract much from the boxy shape of the car. Stick a square sticker on a mid-90s and up vehicle though, and it looks atrocious.

For newer cars I like to use vinyl transparent window decals, if anything. On my current car I have only one. A deadmau5 logo.

I have 2 stickers on my car (only one on my bumper though).

Trunk by the license plate I have:

On my actual bumper I have the following sticker which allows me to use the HOV lane even if I am driving alone:

Other than that, I'm not really into telling the world about my beliefs through stickers on my car LOL

How do you get one of those? We don't have that in Michigan and I would like to know more about it.

The State compiles a list that meet certain standards that are eligible for the sticker. My car (a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid) is on the list so I called the DMV when I bought the car in 2007 and gave them the VIN and Reg# and got the pass in the mail a few days later (fastest I've EVER seen the DMV move....and they were nice too LOL!) BUT, it is going to depend on the state D.O.T. and D.M.V., here is the layout for NY:
https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/clean-pass
http://www.dmv.ny.gov/cleanpass.htm

You would have to see if Michigan has a similar program.

Hope that helps!

I have seen this sign in a car being driven by someone on a cell phone. By putting that sign in the car they're asking people to drive carefully, which they're contradicting by using a phone

Yes, anyone using a phone whilst driving is an idiot.

Nice NRA stickers. I don't put on my car because i fear that the police might profile me because of them and pull me over and demand that they search my car for weapons.

True, I can't tell you what motivated any one individual to put a sticker on his/her car. But I can make a reasonable hypothesis based on what I have seen over the past 25 or so years on the road. That's why I said "Seems like many..."

Interesting how you can look at an individual as they drive by and determine they are smug and perhaps even arrogant.

Not saying you are a Christian (or not), but it's interesting to me how people in general feel it's a Christian trait to be modest, yet during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus himself says:

Quote:

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

I've had the Christian modesty thing shoved down my throat since childhood so it's hard for me to "let my light shine", but I don't have a problem with those who can and do let their light shine.

From what I've seen of NRA literature, the NRA is all about safe and legal use of firearms, so that shouldn't be a problem, no?
Inspiration, move me brightly!
