Cyrillic Script

Sat May 19, 2012 8:08 pm

Hi, I am trying to identify a ship that I saw at Valletta last year.

The name was in cyrillic script.

It was K, (reverse N), (Upside down V), b, A, (reverse N), H.

If anyone could translate, it would be much appreciated.

Is this what you read: КИДВАИН ?

That would be KILBAIN, totally letter for letter translation (although my Cyrillic is kinda rustiy), but I hope it will help you.

It is very similar.

My first attempt was a bit shaky, as I do not have a Cyrillic keyboard.

КИ(upside down V)bДВИН is a bit closer to the name on the ship.

KI?bLIN seems to be the translation.

I assume that first 'b' is Ь...it looks similar, but this is not really a consonant...and I haven't found the upside down V (could it have been the Greek letter lambda?).

Many thanks.

It does look like Ь. The other letter is Lambda.

I may have been misled by thinking that the ship was Russian. I did not consider Greece.

КИЛЬАИН ? Sure it wasn't КИЛЬДИН ? The "Д" is a D, not an A but looks like an A and is used in every Russian game and movie title as a gimmick. I googled КИЛЬДИН and got:

I'm no detective but I think I may be on to something...
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

Did the "b" look like a "b" with an extra bit on top, or like a "B"?

If it's the former, it would be "Kilbain". If the latter, "Kilvain".

Quoting Mir (Reply 7):
"Kilvain".

That's what I was thinking with the "upside down V" The only thing on Google that comes up is generic Russian navy posts and this thread.

The upside-down V is definitely an L sound. Sometimes also depicted as "Л"

So, now that I've found my Russian keyboard function, to the OP, which one of these is it?

1) КИЛВАИН

2) КИЛЬАИН

3) КИЛБАИН

4) КИЛЪАИН

I would go with Кильдин, simply because I know that name exists (it is a French female name) and that is how it would be written in Cyrillic.

DeltaMD90

That is the one.

The writing is the second ot the options that you suggest.

Knowing that ship's name is Kildin, I found the following;

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1403684

My photo shows at least 4 men standing guard on the gang plank, (1 in some sort of camo gear).

Knowing it's role, that makes sense.

Many thanks for everyone's help.

Not sure if KILDIN is the one...

Marinetraffic.com (AIS ship tracker) lists KILDIN as a Norwegian fishing trawler now positioned in the Sea of Barents.

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shipdetails.aspx?MMSI=259635000

I don't see any cyrillic...

It is. Here is (yet another) source to confirm, along with the fact that the OP has already positively identified it.

http://flot.sevastopol.info/ship/razvedka/kildin.htm

Part of the Black Sea fleet, and indeed a medium-range reconnaissance vessel. I was probably wrong about the origin of the name though. It seems that there is an island in the Barents sea named Kil'din (Кильдин), and that is probably why the vessel is named so.

Time! Also it's very hard because I'm not near any Russian speakers. It's a goal I have later in life when I can settle down stuff...
