Who Are The Worst Tourists?

Sun May 27, 2012 8:07 pm

Which people would you least like to find booked into your hotel? Who have you had really bad experiences with?

Come on everyone share you prejudices: be they nationality, race, class or gender.

Me:

British Chavs - I cringe every time I seem em. loud, drunk, national embarrassment. Why go abroad if you just want to eat, sleep and drink Britain. Stay in Britain and claim your dole.
Western sex tourists is SE Asia - Makes me embarrassed to be male. Why would you want to sleep with someone who doesn't want to sleep with you.
Upper class elderly Americans - Cringing cultural insensitivity seems to be built in on manufacture.

I'm going to pull out my hypocrite card here, but sports teams are the worst. I play for a team, and we have the police called on us for noise complaints every time we travel for games. We've actually been banned from a handful of hotels in cities around eastern Canada. I honestly feel really bad for the paying customers and hotel employees who have to put up with our crap.

Ran into too many of these creeps when I was in Phuket.

A friend of mine used to work in security at YUL. She said that they would always pay special attention to males aged 30+ travelling alone from Thailand, Cambodia, etc. because they very often found illegal pornography in their luggage.

YES! Completely agree, makes me want to burn their tracksuits/football shirts of just chuck them in the pool telling them to a) stop ruining my holiday and b) get a fashion sense (e.g. don't wear those shoes with that tone of jogging pant), wear sports clothes for doing sports or down the gym!

That and someone like Janice off Friends :P

Fellow Dutch people, depending on the area you run into them. They are usually loud and always voicing their opinion in Dutch which nobody understands and/or cares about. I try to avoid them when I'm abroad.

Hi!

I would vote for myself. While not obnoxious or loud (I don't think) I am terribly cheap. I never support local business and always stay in chain motels and hotels, particularly budget ones. When wandering around a city I also always sneak into posh hotels and use their restrooms. While I was in Singapore and Australia years back me and my brother would even sneak into posh hotels and use their pool to break up a day's sightseeing. I don't know about now but security was pretty lax back then in that part of the World and we never had any problems and had some good swims for free!

Many thanks,

Pierre

Americans.... most especially in a non-English speaking country. They seem to think that shouting their request/comment/instruction louder and slower will make the foreign language person understand what they're saying in English. Too ignorant to learn a few words in the other person's language even though they're visiting a foreign country. The assumption that EVERYBODY speaks English, and EVERYBODY wants US dollars and not their local currency. That's UGLY!!!!

Not all of us are like that. The first time I went to Israel, I learned some Hebrew beforehand so that I could communicate easier with local merchants, etc., even though I was on a guided trip, and told that there was no need to learn Hebrew. I've continued learning more as I go on more trips there (I've been there 4 times so far), and although I only ever remember a few basic questions, my numbers, etc., I attempt to speak Hebrew, and only ask "Ata medabear angleet?" (Do you speak English?) when I get to a point in the conversation when I am at a loss for words.

And Israelis really do - at least in my experience - love the American Dollar.

I don't think it depends on the nationality so much as on people's social background. You just think people from nations other than your own aren't so bad, because you don't really know what to think oft them. If you're British, and you see Chavvy people, you feel ashamed and disgusted. If you're in Cuba and see loud Argentinians, you don't necessarily feel the same way about them because you think it's an endearing, South American trait - or something along those lines. Even though they both have comparable social backgrounds in their respective homecountries. Just that you think of one as the deadbeats from the estate, and you think of the other as some nice, new exotic encounter.

I find lower class people in general off putting. Lower class not in terms of their socioeconomic standing, but in terms of their lifestyles. It is reasonable for me to assume I have zero common interest with people who get drunk in the afternoon, shouting along to corny music. I don't have anything against them, personally. I just wish to avoid their proximity.

Scum will be scum, and act accordingly. It really has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, religion or nationality. Except for East Europeans. They look funny to me. No offense.

I agree with those who suggest 'sex tourists' especially those seeking children (under 18's) for sex, seeing violent sex, either make insultingly low or no payment exploiting very poor prostitutes, unsafe sex or to rape in countries with lax laws or enforcement.

Some others:

'Drinking' tourists. Americans between 17-20 (we have a 21 age minimum nationally) going to places with lower ages mainly to drink and get drunk, often with bad behaviors as a result. Various Europeans where alcohol is expensive or difficult to access going to places with cheap prices and less strict access, too many drinking to excess and with resulting bad behaviors.

Tax-dodgers. Going to various tax and corporate no or low tax havens to drop their riches to avoid taxes. This hurts the tax revenues of their countries of residence/citizenship.

Those with no respect for nature. I have seen far too many examples people getting too close to wild animals, cliff edges, hot springs, some bypassing safety structures or worse; that throw trash around instead of placing it in a collection container.

Those that commit acts of vandalism or graffiti, especially at historical or certain natural sites.

Those that drive too fast, too slow or otherwise show no respect of road laws.

Those who are obnoxious racists or sexists, belittle locals, or otherwise treat with no respect.

Those that speak loud, using insulting, obnoxious, filthy language.

Don't respect tipping 'rules'. This is a problem with many tourists where tipping is not the custom or included in a restaurant or other bill then go to places - especially the USA - where it is a custom to tip and not normally included in the bill and where the tips are an important part of the income of service employees.

Visiting sports fans - especially if the 'home' team wins.

Criminals who go to another country, do their criminal activities and leave before caught.

Religious 'missionaries' who go to a poor country to seek followers offering 'help' but at the cost of getting converts or groups like the Mormons who are looking for souls to steal in foreign countries.

That's a cliché. I have seen surveys saying that American tourists are among those who are most welcome.

Quoting something (Reply 9):

Those tourists are really bad, second only to some British students who spent some days in Berlin with their class, and were caught spraying graffiti on several residential buildings.

A category of its own, albeit mostly harmless, are dumb people: I once ran across a profile page of a British lady on virtualtourist.com who wondered why Berliners would not "repair" Berlin's Memorial Church's tower ruin. In other words this church tower:

GNU license

Another lady, I think from the Phillipines, wondered if she could see the Alps while in Dresden or if she had to go to Denmark(!) to see them. Granted those people, while clueless, can still be nice - and my geographical knowledge is limited, too.

Perhaps even the Canadian who got a free sightseeing tour to the next police station is basically a harmless and nice person - albeit totally clueless: He did the Nazi salute standing in front of the Reichstag Building, which, as you all know, accomodates the parliament, and where you won't have a hard time seeing some cops.

People ...

I really can't think of a group. Every group has their bad apples. I think one thing is age. Younger people will be louder but at the same time I think they are nicer too. Asian tourist in huge groups taking pictures of everything can be annoying but they are polite.

I am trying to think of what type of tourist is the worst down here in Miami. Nothing really comes right to mind. I'm deliberating between the loud braziallian or loud New Yorker. A 25 year old New York male. That might be it for Miami.

As for the tipping most places down here that get a lot of tourist have inserted 18% tip to all checks.

This statement shouldn't surprise you knowing that posters constant anti-American remarks on this forum. Purely anecdotal, but when I travel me and my dad always learn words and will thank them in the local language even when they speak English to us the whole time. I'll even learn a lot of the alphabet if they don't use the Latin alphabet (like in Greek for example.) But woe to me... I'm just a stupid American

Sounds like most of you guys in this forum doesn't travel much.
The worst I have encountered have been from the Middle East. Some can be very rude, pushy obnoxious and worst of all, their entire family act this way with their little children being just as rude, bratty and behavior unchecked by their parents. Many don't wear deodorant either.
Then there is the bus-loads of Russian tourist that are far more obnoxious than the stereotypical American tourist. They get angry because no one speaks Russian outside of Russia.
Then there are the soccer/football hooligans and they come from just about any country in Europe.

I do not like generalizations, but in the spirit of this thread, I will share a few stories.

Mexicans can be nasty. Specially if they are not very cultivated. I was once sitting at a bistro next to Notre Dame´s Cathedral in Paris when a Mexican family sat at a table next to me. The father and the noisy kids ordered their food. He ordered Boeuf Bourgignon. When it arrived, he got out of his bag a can of Mexican "Jalapeños en Vinagre" from Herdez, opened it and dump the chiles on top of the Boeuf Bourgignon.

I almost had a seizure and the French waiter you could tell he wanted to strangle the man. What´s the point of travelloing so many miles to experience another country and its culture if you won´t leave your chiles behind? Absurd.

Then you have the story of the Mexican who during France´s World Cup extinguished the eternal flame on the grave for the Unknown Soldier under the Arch de Triomph by taking a leak... It sparked an international incident, if I recall correctly.

Americans are touch and go. I´ve met excellent behaved Americans on my trips, people I´ve made friends with for life. Polite, friendly, culturally sensitive and overall excellent people. But then you have the average high school or college spring breakers, ugh. I´d rather not get close to them for miles.

Argentines are a tough crowd too. They make comparisons all the time and are very hard to please. They can be very vocal and rude and have a hard time understanding why things are not done like they are done back in Buenos Aires.

It´s all general of course. Scum is scum and you will find it everywhere as has been already said.

No. It was really a serious thing. The Mexican Government had to get its Ambassador to France into a ceremony of "dis-agrriveuosness" for the French people. If that term exists, sorry, it´s just too technical-diplomatic jargon, but it was really bad.

I thought there were a lot of sophisticated travellers here at A.net but I guess there isn't. I get annoyed by Western tourist that only hang out in enclaves full of other Westerners and do nothing but sit around and people watch. On top of that, they want to start arguments about US politics and these aren't the Americans I'm talking about.

The worst tourists are the ones who travel the world only to see it in comparisons.

"You don't have [x] here..."

"Back home, we don't do it that way..."

"This isn't like back home..."

And so on. Sure, on one level it's only natural to use something familiar as a reference point in trying to understand something else, but that's not quite what I'm getting at here. A traveller needs to appreciate places and experiences for their own sake, otherwise why bother stepping out the front door?

Otherwise, I find the Travelling Drunk Aussie Bogan the most annoying and distasteful kind of tourist. I blame the likes of Jetstar and Air Asia X for spreading this particular blight around the world.

I am surprised I haven't seen more Americans this and Americans that....Hey, I agree we are obnoxious. But as individuals there are a couple of good American tourists out there, I am including myself in that group.  With that being said, I will say that Americans are the worst tourists! I can be honest about things and its true IMO. As Bookishavaitor said he dislikes tourists who say "Its not like this at home." Well there you go. Thats what they (not I) do. I have been to a few places and thats what I have witnessed, American tourists giving the locals grief because they cannot accommodate them to their "standards." The whole point of travelling is to see how the rest of the world is! Its NOT the same. However, ethnocentrism most often prevails in the mindset of that person.

The Japanese are pretty much trained and conditioned to be polite as all hell, so this isn't surprising. We Americans have been routinely told when we go somewhere to be polite and to not make Americans look bad. We did just the opposite in Catalonia....for one day.

The worst tourists I have seen don't fit into a nationality. A couple of years ago, I was in Israel over the High Holidays - the 2 most important holidays on the Jewish calendar. I saw a couple of people - their accents sounded Canadian to me, but I'm not sure - complaining LOUDLY that for 2 days, nothing would be open. Now, this is just me...if I'm going to a holy country, I research any holidays during my trip beforehand and prepare for them. So my worst tourist is the one who goes someplace - even in their own country - not knowing what they're getting in to. Example...I love Washington, DC...but am not a big fan of crowds, so unless I'm going there for something like an airshow, I'll plan my trip around any events, protests, etc. that are going on.

Try going to France and see how you get on , they may speak english, but few will admit to it, even in the hospitality industry, certainly snapped us out of "lazy mode"

I've witnessed some fairly appalling travellers over the years, most of whom appear to want everything to be just as it is back home, I wonder why they travel, why not stay at home and make us all happier people ?

I tend to avoid places where British chavs are likely to hang out, with a bit oif research this isn't normally a problem, as the media is full of reports of drunken behaviour by British tourists across Europe. On that basis the obnoxious ones are usually from other nations, and US citizens tend to appear as the worst. rarely by behaviour as US citizens appear to me to drink rather less than Europeans, and appear to be on the whole readily able to obey laws. The problem seems to be on the lines of "we wouldn't put up with this at home" be it the hotel bed, the meals, even the water pressure in the shower.
The result was that I had a vision of a litter free nation, everything freshly painted, marvellous cuisine, and a shower with water pressure that stung your skin. Then I went and visited the US for the first time !
I now realise that the US has just as many instances of litter, poor hotel rooms, poor service etc as we have.

Hard to generalise really Ive met good and bad in all places I have been . Brits/Germans/French/Dutch/Italians/Greeks/Americans/Canadians/Spanish etc.....

I would avoid the Spanish resorts of Benidorm and Magaluf etc... they are horrible and full of people I prefer not to mix with.

Alot of my vacations are cruise ship ones so you don't get many hooligans on those especially the off peak and longer ones.

Then you have the story of the Mexican who during France´s World Cup extinguished the eternal flame on the grave for the Unknown Soldier under the Arch de Triomph by taking a leak... It sparked an international incident, if I recall correctly.

Ahhh... I remember that one. Who was that guy? Probably a son-of-a-politician dilapidating tax money.

For the record, I've found most American tourists to be polite and respectful. Sure, youngsters can be noisy but most of the time they abide by the rules. Family kids tend to be well educated and polite.

Whenever the Rangers, the Canadiens, the Canucks, the Kings, the Pens, the Caps, and the Wings are in town, more than half of the fans are fans of the other team.....but I think after this season we'll see more. They're already predicting record season ticket sales- and i mean a shattering of the previous record

There are a lot of ex Detroit people in Phoenix. Probably they are Coyote fans during 78 of the 82 games, but when Wings come to town they are Wings fans.

It is the same in Tampa. I am a Wings and Lightning fan. Against other teams I go for the Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum, but when Wings come to down (which is only once ever other year) I wear my Wings jersey. When Wings came last winter - the Forum was 90% redwings jerseys and I recognized a lot of the people there that normally wear Vinny Lecavlier and Stamkos Lightning jerseys wearing Datsyuk and Zetterberg Redwing jerseys when the Wings came. Plus it also helps when the Lightning General Manager is a former Redwing captain and legend.

With the new NHL alignment Wings and Coyotes will only play each other twice a year once home and once away this coming up fall.

One of my friends had a stopover in CDG. Now, I don't know how true this story is, but this happened in the airport. In between flights, he goes to get a coffee. He asks the cashier is they take credit cards. Her response, "Huh?" This goes on for about ten minutes, him trying to find out if they'll take his credit card. Mind you, he already has his drink. Finally, someone behind him in line just yells at the cashier, "carte de crédit!" and she understood.

Now, I know the European and Asian schools systems teach numerous foreign languages, but the American school system is not like that. I think anyone working in a major airport that handles a large amount of international traffic should have at least basic English skills...especially when "credit card" and "carte de crédit" are very close in terms of pronunciation.

Even before this, France was way down, close to the bottom on my list of countries to visit.

Now I did have an experience in Israel, where, if you saw one of my above posts, I had been told before my first trip that "everyone speaks English." One night, our group was in downtown Tel Aviv. Most people opted for schawrma, but myself and a couple other people opted to go to a burger place. My Hebrew at this point was horrible. It was my turn to order, and in Hebrew, I asked the cashier "I'm sorry, but I don't speak Hebrew, do you speak English?" She said she didn't. No one else in the restaurant did. So I had to call my Israeli friend who was also on the trip over from another restaurant to help us order. After he ordered, he looked at me. "By the way, she understood everything you said, she was just screwing with you."

I completely agree Photopilot! Although a couple of times in Germany, I had my little German phrasebook out and had practiced a few phrases in German with the employees of the small hostels I was staying at, all the German merchants wanted to do is speak English! They wouldn't speak German to me!

At all the other places, they patiently suffered while I butchered their beautiful language and a few even corrected me and replied in slow, easier to understand German. One place even fixed my sunglasses for free and thanked me in English for trying to speak German.

No matter how bad you butcher a language, your hosts do appreciate the effort and it goes a long way! Especially in the more rural places.

Generally, I don't like anyone who gets in my way whilst walking. I don't care if they're from Freilassing. Just don't get in my way, please.

Worst in Austria

1. Americans
They can be very touchy and in your face. I once gave bus directions to a guy who was from some suburb in Detroit who tried to give me a hug after I helped him out. Also, they always assume that everyone speaks English. Not just at the airport, but everywhere. So, they begin talking in English.

2. Japanese
I don't understand why they take pictures of everything. Not just buildings. EVERYTHING. One time, on a bus, I saw a Japanese guy take a picture of a machine where you validate your ticket. It was just a metal box.

3. Chinese
They can be very rude.

4. British
Loud, obnoxious. Trying to get from the train from Kaprun or Kitzbühel to the airport for their FR flight back to STN. Can also be very rude. Two weeks ago, I was at an outdoor bar and two male british tourists had to be dealt with by the police because they'd gotten out of control. They were trying to urinate in a small fountain. The toilets were 10m away.

I know a lot of people, and agree with this view to a degree, that wish that Austria in general, and Salzburg in particular, didn't have so many tourists. From April through October, it is the worst here, and I avoid parts of the Salzburg Altstadt altogether. A close friend of mine recently turned down a job here in Salzburg to move back to Augsburg. She said she just couldn't stand the tourists after 6 years at university here.

I HATE Chinese tourists. They take three steps on the sidewalk in front of some random building or hell...even a trashcan...then have to pose for a family picture.

I almost had a seizure and the French waiter you could tell he wanted to strangle the man.

Seen that for myself! But it was the waiter who almost had a seizure! I loved the way you put it. I fell off my chair laughing!

I find the Japanese usually to be very nice. They may be hard to understand sometimes though. I find that they have a curiosity about everything they see. That's maybe why they take so many photos. They also like to bow a lot. If I see that they are going to do this even here in America, I'll usually reciprocate.

One time in front of the Palmer House in Chicago there was a large group of Japanese tourists lined up. They were taking cabs to their destination. They were all standing in a perfect line. When a cab came, 4 or 5 would get in the cab and then the entire line would bow before the cab door closed and departed. They did this each time a cab came and picked some of this up. Since they were all wearing business suits I figured that they were there for business.

I wonder why it is then that there are so many Americans travelling with Canadian flags sewn onto the back of their backpacks?

I don't mind the pictures too much, although they show zero restraint whether it's the Eiffel Tower or say, a poor minority dressed differently even within their own Chinese borders. It's more the consistent lack of awareness as they steamroll right over those around them without any acknowledgement.

Because those Americans are lame and think the world hates them and is just waiting to beat them up, when in fact most people (perhaps all even?) realize the American government does not necessarily equate to the American tourist.

Japanese like remembering things.......and find that taking photos of the weirdest shit possible is the best way to memorize stuff. When I was in Tokyo, on a train, going back to my hotel from Harajuku, there were these middle school girls who were taking 100s of photos of me on the train....simply because i looked like some musician (which i kinda am)....and I was quite honored to say the least.

My 5 months I spent studying in BCN and traveling around europe never had a problem being American. Most people wanted to know more. In Spain I fitted in well and spoke Spanish but even when speaking Spanish or in the other countries it would come up and I never had a problem. Most people wanted to know where I was from in the states, what I thought of their country and how much they either want to travel to the states or how much they enjoyed it. Those fake Canadians I don't get it. They are just scared I guess.
