My Mother Turned 70 Today

Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:04 am

It was weird. We tried to celebrate as every year since my father´s passing. A great lunch and presents. But...she was turning 70. She did not want to make a great deal out of it, but my brother and me did. My present was "Planet Earth" narrated by Richard Attenbourough and she liked it. Boy I really wish she could be immortal.

My mom is 72 and living 1200 miles away in Florida, but we talk on the phone once or twice a week and from time to time when I see something I think she would enjoy I make sure it shows up on her doorstep.

My mom is truly a blessing. When I visit FL, I cannot tell you how many people come up to me and tell me what a blessing she is in their lives. She had well over a hundred people at her retirement party, and the waves of love people were showing all night and in the speeches that were made was unbelievable.

I guess she balances out my father, who was an alcoholic and an idiot for not realizing what a great woman he was married to.

My mum turned 75 last month and my dad will be 76 in October. Both still drive, my dad still works, he has retired a couple of times but I think my mum drives him nuts at home so he goes back to work!

My mum has had both hips replaced but is still going strong, she walks unaided. My in-laws both passed away a long time ago so I am very lucky to still have both my parents. They live 15 minutes away from me so it's easy to see them, unlike for my sisters (and their children) who live in England and Tanzania.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Well, we'll have to wait another 93 years before we can confirm that...
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

I can well understand your mother. When I became 40 I was in Muscat and got a telegram from my parents PLUS a big basket from the hotel director with fruit and two bottles of champagne ! And in the evening was in the Indian restaurant on top of Muscat Airport, overlooking the Straits of Hormuz with that endless stream of lightened tankers leaving the Gulf. A great thing

At age 50 I had a very nice evening dinner in a splendid and nice Greek-Egyptian restaurant on the beautiful coastline of Alexandria, enjjoyed it heavily but realized that I most likely had passed the first half of my life

At age 60, it was a silent affair locally just back home and some weeks later a nice meeting with my sister in law, but rather a bit subdued.

Sure, you nowadays can get 110 fairly easily. But my brother passed away at age 46, my Godfather at age 88, my dad at 87, mum at age 90, my favourite uncle at age 102 !! and was still completely up-to-date at 99 !!

BUT, your mother of course is painfully aware of the fact that it now can be over within a day or less. She now is in what may mother described as the "free-of-charge-grace-years". Alright, I had dad with us on a travel trip from Switzerland to Texas when he was 85 (died at 87) and he enjoyed it heavily. Mum and Dad were on vacations when Dad was 86 in Antalya /Turkey and both enjoyed it heavily. I had mum with me in Jersey/UK at age 84, in Malta at age 85 and in Beirut at age 86, and she heavily enjoyed those journeys. However, both all the time knew that it was just "life on call"

So, no, your mum may live on for decades, but of course realizes the realities

Its fantastic when one tries to do a little for an Elder parent who once did so much for us.
what can I say.....Their smile & unselfish affection says it all.

Indeed.

My mom has had a project to scan in old family pictures for quite a while now, so for Mother's Day I bought her a scanner that is easier to use, quicker, and does a better job than her current all-in-1 device.

I'm amazed at how grateful she is for a simple gift like that, which cost me $80 or so.

It seems the project of scanning in all those photos has weighed on her mind pretty heavily, and she is so grateful to be able to make progress on it.

And the project is paying dividends for the whole family: she is sending around all kinds of interesting photos via both email and Facebook!

So, as you say, a simple gift can pay all kinds of dividends, both for the giver and the receiver.

It makes me so happy to see how happy she is!

One thing I realise....How much successfull we become.....we can never be like our parents in terms of simplicity......Those folks were/are amazing. They find happiness in such small things.

You are correct, but if makes you fell better, we recently had a thread here about how satisfying a trip to the toilet can be....

We'll never totally eliminate our humanity, and IMHO that's a good thing.

As many distractions we have, there still is our basic humanity underlying every thing we do.

There's even times when it reaches up and bites us to remind us that it's still there!

Many of us still relish computer-free and phone-free holidays to help reconnect to our humanity.

WOW Revelation your post is damn near a carbon copy of mine with my mom who also lived 1000+ miles away In Cape Coral FL. My dad too was an alcoholic and an idiot at times he died in 1993. My mom passed away 2 yrs ago at just shy of her 78th birthday. But I too called her several times a week and also flew down at least 3 or 4x a yr so I always tried to do my best to be a good son to her.. Continue to cherish your mom you will be amazed how fast it all ends...

I want to join all of you guys on a thanksgiving for our mothers. My mom will turn 80 this year and is still, thanks to God, a very healthy woman that still drives both in Colombia and in the USA where she travels every year to visit my brothers and sister. She is a Soprano and still sings Opera (amateur) and even finished 1st in the female over 70 in the 5K in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. God Bless our moms.

If you can still remember that, you're doing pretty good.

Not so easily for your family.

See? Lookie there. God bless that woman. Especially to have raised you!

My mom is 83 and still kicking despite her handicap. Back in 1965 she had both of her legs severed in a car accident. Lucky for us a very talented Osteopathician was able to re-attach both of her limbs. It was one of the first successful limb re-attachments in medical history.
That being said, Mom is asking me to accompany her on a cruise of Alaska in August. My sister who is a Nurse Practitioner will also go. Mom still needs help getting along but she won't ever stop living life until she's dead. My sister and I know this may be her last vacation trip, ever, and it's up to us to show her a grand time. Mom has had a hard life and God bless her fortitude.
Don't feel sorry for me though. I'm taking the Coast Starlight up to Seattle and then the Sounder to Everett for the Boeing plant tour before I meet Mom and sis for the cruise. Should be pretty sweet.

So, my advice to you my friend Martin....
Forgeddaboutit!!!
Should she pass tomorrow, she knows her son loves her.
474218, Carl, You will be missed.

It's sad her time came, but as Kevin said, when she passed she had the joy of knowing her son and many others loved her.
