Where To Watch The 4th Of July Fireworks In NYC?

Sun Jun 03, 2012 3:43 pm

So I will be in New York for the 4th of July. I've already been there years ago on the same date, and chose to watch the fireworks standing on FDR drive (and being there hours and hours in advance, under the sun, with other millions of people). It was a nice experience, but this year I'd like to do it differently.

What would you suggest as the best way to watch those fireworks? I was thinking about a boat cruise like this one:

It looks like it's not sold out yet. Do you think this is any good? Or should I look at something else?

Thank you for your advice!

Take the ferry over to Weehawken NJ, the cliffs above the Hudson river have the best views. Also Sinatra park in Hoboken.

A few years ago, a friend and I went to Battery Park to watch them over the Statue of Liberty. As soon as that display ended, we walked maybe 2 or 3 blocks, and were able to see another one above the East River.

I should note that we got to battery park around 6:30, and we were sitting right by the water.

That year they were still doing the Macy's display on the East river and New Jersey was doing their own from Liberty State Park on the Hudson. Now there's only one display, on the Hudson. The best views are from the Jersey side, especially the Palisades cliffs in Weehawken and Sinatra park in Hoboken.

Everywhere you go its going to be packed with massive crowds. The Jersey waterfront might be better given that there aren't many buildings blocking your view like in Manhattan........

That's good to know, thank you! And thanks for all the other tips, too.

What about the boat cruise - is this more of a tourist trap, or is it any good? Has anyone of you done it?

I went to watch and shoot them in 2009, which I believe was the first year they were over the Hudson. I went up to Alexander Hamilton Park in Weehawken. It's up on the cliff, directly across from the Intrepid, and just north of the fireworks site, so you are looking back toward midtown Manhattan to view them. I got there early afternoon (1 or 2pm) and got a spot right up along the fence overlooking the river.

There has always only been one diplay, the Macy's display, that was always on the East River. A couple years ago, the year you went, there was an event (I forget exactly) going on at Liberty state park so there were two displays that year (Macys on the East river and the event at Liberty State Park in New Jersey on the Hudson). Now there's still one, Macy's, but they've moved it to the Hudson (where it should have been all along). The Hudson offers much better viewing opportunities.
