What Car Use Air Ride Suspension?

Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:51 pm

I was looking up air ride suspension, and thought it was just use in trucks and buses, then I found out, that the Lincoln Town Car, had air ride suspension. Now, that the Lincoln Town Car was discontinued, what current cars, use air ride suspension? Also if there is none, could this feature be used in future cars?

PS: I count this as a car post, which is common on A-Net.

What Car Use Air Ride Suspension?

Hi!

When we were kids in the 80s here in Europe my mum had a Citroen which had air suspension I think. It was very different. The whole car used to raise and lower when you started the engine and switched it off.

I don't really remember the ride being any smoother though but maybe it was.

Many thanks,

Pierre

Edit: Sorry I just reread and you were asking about current cars. Sorry.

The Town Car ended pruduction only 9 months ago.
Plenty of Town Cars out there on the market for you to chose from 1984 model year till 2011.
They're also used on Maybach, Rolls-Royce, Lexus, Land Rover/Range Rover and SsangYong.

While not currently produced my H2 has air bags on the rear and is probably the smoothest riding vehicle I have ever owned.
It can be adjusted up or down from standard position but I have never had to raise it in use although I have had to remove the nerf bars/steps a few times for clearance when doing some serious off road work. (excuse, make that play)

My 2007 Lexus GX470 has a rear air-ride suspension, and it's the only thing about it that I have a real love-hate relationship with.

No Citroen don't use air, the classic Citroen ride is from Hydropneumatic suspension, using pressurised nitrogen. A similar system was the hydrolastic suspension used by British Leyland, I owned a hydrolastic Mini for a while, for a small car it had a great ride.

Other cars using air suspension are:

Audi A8, A6, C7
Maybach
Mercedes S Class
Range Rover
VW Phaeton & Touareg
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Rolls Royce
Bentley
SsangYong
Subaru
Lexus

There are many more.

A friend on mine had an HQ Holden with air shocks, every couple of months he had to pump them up.

Will these cars might have pneumatic suspension adjustment (including my Navigator), that's very different from the old Citroen system. The Citroen would collapse to the ground without pressure, whereas the others will not - there are springs and other suspension pieces that hold the car up.

My parents had a Citroen CX back in the day. Absolutely stunning highway car. The ride was like velvet. But that same suspension was a source of mirth and fear on mountain roads.

My mother was telling me the other day about her father taking her regularly from Paris' suburbs to Lyon (about 500Km) and back in the same day to visit her grandparents, cruising at more than 200Km/h in his Citroën DS with hydro-pneumatic suspension. It didn't feel that fast.

That was also a car that could drive on three wheels if necessary, and jack itself up when you needed to change a tire.

Because it wasn't. The only way to get a DS to 200 km/h is to set off a rather large bomb off in the trunk.

Early DS models(remember they were in production nearly 20 years) would top out at about 140, from what I remember. Later versions topped out around 160. The most powerful version ever made right at the end was the Palas version which would get to 190 with a good tailwind.
