Nalbandian Disqualified For Hurting Official

Mon Jun 18, 2012 11:13 am

David Nalbandian has been disqualified for kicking an advertising hording into an official at the Aegon Championships final causing significant bleeding. He has lots his second place E44,000 and can ecpect to be fined another $25,000.

His actions seem totally inexcusable to me and I would think a ban is in order.

That had to be unbelievably painful.

I read in a news report that Nalbandian claimed that he should not have been disqualified...LOL he's lucky he didn't get his ass kicked too!

Sounds like he may be lucky to escape without prosecution for assault. The Police are investigating.

What a dick. Can't believe he tried to blame it on the ATP being hard on the players or whatever:

It's a tough moment to end a final like that but sometimes we feel so much pressure from the ATP playing so many tournaments.

"Today I've made a mistake. Sometimes I agree and I do but everyone makes mistakes. I don't feel it had to end like that - especially in a final.

"There are a lot of rules and sometimes they don't do anything. The rule book is very big and I can tell you the ATP do a lot to the players and nothing happens."

What a dick.

Some of the comments in the US newspapers try and make this sound no different than a player smashing his/her racket or some other kind of tantrum. Professional tennis doesn't need this behavior and whether or not he knew kicking the board was going to injure the linesman doesn't matter to the linesman. I'm actually glad he spoke up for himself on the court and told the player he was in the wrong.

I don't know if he should spend jail time because there really wasn't intent to injure but he should spend some time out of professional tennis as a result.

I don't think he should be held legally liable in any way (unless the linesman needs medical costs covered), but fine and suspension from ATP would make sense.

We agree 100% vik. Even if this was in the US his medical costs would likely have been covered by the organizer's insurance. As I mentioned, he doesn't need to play professional tennis for a while, IMO. And, as you say I fine would make sense as well.
