Post A Pic Of Your Pet

Mon Jun 18, 2012 11:10 pm

Haven't had one of these in a while. I adopted/rescued my wonder pup from the city of Calgary pound almost a year ago. They estimated she was 3 years old at the time she was caught and she spent almost 4 months in lockup with little to no interest from anyone as she had "issues" (resource guarding/anxiety etc). I decided to give her a chance and she has become a relatively well adjusted little pooch.

I'm afraid to say I have a huge dislike for cats!

As for me, I don't have any pets. But my girlfriend does have two dogs who I'd like to consider my own...

This is Alfie, a cross between a Terrier and a Poodle (AFAIK)

And Jayden, a King Charles Spaniel

And here is a photo of our Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix Abbey (3 years old)

They are all very obedient and lovable dogs. They are truly a pleasure to have.

Here is Buddy, our five year old Black Lab. See that tree in the backround? It took him two seconds to get from that tree to th current position in the photo! He's a constant motion machine. But very friendly but certainly a wilda** dog!

I never really was a cat person either I was brought up around dogs. My sister brought Lillith because she'd always wanted a cat however as soon as she took the cat home it only wanted to be with me. She is quite affectionate though and quite naughty. When she thinks no one is watching she'll take a swing at one of the dogs (usualy Rex) then he'll get into trouble for chasing her through the house.

I'm a dog person to be honest. However, our cat was rescued. She was a kitten abandoned by her mother who though we were Social Services or something. She had a litter of about 4-5 and this one was rejected. My sister waited all day to see if the mom would take it back and when it never did, she talked my parents into keeping it. Just a few weeks later, a second litter could be heard in our backyard and yet another cat was abandoned.

On this picture, that cat is barely 3 weeks old. We gave him away to a family friend.

Now, I don't really like cats because to me they seem to have this bitchy attitude, but at the same time, their personalities are something incredible. For instance, our cat got jealous when we brought the little tyke above to the living room. She sniffed and turned her back on us and hid under the couch. When my sister once went to grab her, she hissed and clawed back. Downside to having a cat? All the hair...my sister practically cleans the living room twice a week and vacuum is a must.

Aren't those Caucasian Shepherds naturally quite aggressive? I haven't seen one in the U.S. but I have heard that this dog is slowly replacing the Pit Bull as drug dealers dogs of choice and others in the 'hood.

I highly recommend it. It's a valuable service to the community. There are all kinds of jobs that you could do at a shelter.
But if can be heartbreaking seeing all the dogs there without homes. There are a lot of great dogs in shelters awaiting adoption.
That's how I got three of mine posted above. They were just too good to leave there.

If someone doesn't have the time to work a schedule in a shelter, you can often foster a dog at home. The dog stays with you and on weekends you return the dog to the shelter for adoption viewing and then if it doesn't get adopted it goes home with you again.
I did that for a long time too. It also helps the dog because some dogs get depressed in a shelter and become withdrawn. By going to a foster home the dogs faith in living is restored. Some shelters have off site adoptions at pet stores. You usually bring your foster to one of those if your shelter had that kind of program.

Another thing we do at our shelter is run shuttles between the shelter and the dog park about 5 miles away. We take a group of five volunteers and dogs to the park to let them run wild. This also helps with the dogs morale and keeps them well socialized.

There are just so many positions available in shelters I am sure you can find something to do there that you will find very rewarding.

We found Emma, our Black Lab, on petfinder. My parents have had 4 Black labs between them, so after Dixie, our last lab died in March 2011, we knew that we wanted a pure Black Lab.

We know that since she is a rescue, there is a chance she is mixed. Her tail is kind of a hook shape, which isn't correct for lab...we aren't sure if that's because there is another breed mixed in, or she is pure, and something happened in the breeding to change the tail. Either way, she is a great pet, and we love her.

Emma has been a part of our family for over a year now. She has definitely been abused, and when we first got her, she didn't know what to do while she is in the house. She stayed on an old quilt that had been Dixie's bed, and had her scent on it. After a few weeks, she would walk around, and stay in other rooms for short periods of time. Now, we can't keep her out of our beds, she just always has to be around us. Loud noises still startle her, but instead of running away like she did at first, she will jump, but then investigate the noise.

We love the little personality that Emma has developed, and don't see how anyone could abuse this sweet dog.

You'd be surprised what I hear out of people at our shelter when it comes to the way they treat animals. In some areas of the country dogs & cats are treated just like livestock rather than a family member. I have run into quite a few people who weren't even aware that dogs have emotions too! Some of these people shouldn't even have kids let alone dogs.

Congratulations for adopting a black lab! Unfortunately black dogs get a bad rap at shelters due to the "black dog syndrome".
Old wives tales tell people that black dogs are more likely to bite than other colored dogs do (not true). Black dogs are harder to train than other colored dogs (not true either), and even worse if you have a black dog and a t-storm comes the dog will attack you and your family. (not true either). And you wouldn't believe the number of people who believe that crap.

As far as your hook tail on your lab goes it doesn't necessarily mean that your dog is not a full blooded lab. It could also be what's known as a "fault" in the dogs physical description. It doesn't make your dog any less of a dog nor less desirable. But you won't qualify for a show ring, but since your dog is neutered it wouldn't be able to compete anyway.

We do see a lot of labs in our shelter. I think the reason for this is that people don't research the breed before buying a pup.
And labs are wild dogs when they are young. Just overly playful and they really love their owners! After a few years (3-4 if you are lucky) they calm down. They are very intelligent and learn very quickly. And they do require exercise, and a lot of it too.

There is a website you may want to look at: http://www.blacklabrador.com. It contains tons of information about the labrador retriever breed. I recommend it to any lab owner.

If someone doesn't have the time to work a schedule in a shelter, you can often foster a dog at home. The dog stays with you and on weekends you return the dog to the shelter for adoption viewing and then if it doesn't get adopted it goes home with you again.

I couldn't do that....last time I tried that (ex-wife and I), we ended up keeping him because we got attached ...

We love the little personality that Emma has developed, and don't see how anyone could abuse this sweet dog.

Aren't those Caucasian Shepherds naturally quite aggressive? I haven't seen one in the U.S. but I have heard that this dog is slowly replacing the Pit Bull as drug dealers dogs of choice and others in the 'hood.

They are quite aggressive and effective as guard dogs. Her fangs are very sharp at their back edge and the muscles on their neck are very strong. As a breed, they tend to be quite disobedient at times but this can be solved by proper training when they are young. They just have to get who is in charge from the start and even during their life, they need to be reminded. For example, when walking her, she is never allowed to lead, only to follow, I was told this was crucial for her never to assume she is in charge of the group. Although they are known to be aggressive and very protective of their territory, they are very good with all members of the family as well as people who are "accepted" in the house by the family. Mine tends to bark a lot at everything that moves but she is not as aggressive as other dogs I see around. She also behaves very well when she is being walked.

Nice looking dog though.

My niece and nephew have a half corgi half jack russell terrier mix. Very sweet dog, really do love Corgis. One of a few small breed dogs that I like.

My cats:

Sweetboy and Coco enjoying each others company on a cold winter day.

And the newest addition, Toph. She was found up a tree by a friend of a friend. We went to go look at her and she came home with us. After two weeks now the other cats are getting along well with her, though she harasses Sweetboy b/c he is such a big pushover. Coco has a much firmer hand with her and I think Toph respects her more and doesn't bug her as much. I was very worried that Coco would take much longer to get along with her, but I came home last Tuesday to find the two of them asleep together on the couch.

Sounds more like neglect than abuse. Abused dogs are frequently aggressive. Neglected (undersocialized) dogs are usually very skittish.

Our Toby is a very fearful, skittish dog. If we walk at him too quickly, he runs. When we pet him, he often cowers. He's terrified of every single human in the world except about four people. I'm pretty sure he spent most of the first year of his life in a crate in someone's back yard.
