I need to add these events to my travel info website...

Since these celebration/parades are large-scale (Houston is expecting 300,000 this weekend), is there a list of the largest pride events in the U.S.?

I am sure that there is one somewhere. Chicago's was 750,000 last year.

San Francisco is this weekend. This city goes wild and all-out.

Wasn't in the mood for it this year (plus the hubby had to work that weekend) so I missed out on the DC Pride 2012 that, by all news reports, was a big success with a very mixed crowd. I do plan to attend the one here at my agency - more of an "observance" ceremony than a pride event but still a nice gesture to see that we are acknowledged by our leadership.

I bet. I attended the one in the German city of Köln (Cologne/CGN) last year and the atmosphere there reminded me a lot of San Francisco - just tons of people who wanted to have a good time.

Houston was the first and so far only nighttime parade. Have any other cities done a nighttime one?

OMG yes it does. Back when I was young, single, buff, and horny, I went to NYC Pride, which is similar to SF Pride. Trouble is that it winds up being a huge crowd of people standing packed together in the street in the hot sun. You can barely turn around, let alone move anywhere. Other than the parade, it's just a huge street fair/meat market. And with the street that jam-packed with people, it's a stampede with fatalities (a-la Love Parade) just waiting to happen.

I'd rather be at the beach with my hubby and our dogs than wasting my time in a fustercluck like that.

Yeah, I'm a kermudgeon.

I'm with you. I haven't been to Houston's in years and I can literally walk to it each year. It's just too hot , even for a night time parade and it's jammed packed with lesbians. Somehow the lesbians of Houston, other than our mayor, come out of the tool shed and act like frat boys!!!!

NYC is this weekend. Last year was absolutely insane as only a few days before, NY passed the same sex marriage bill. I have never seen so much joy in the faces of those marching and those watching. It's going to be hard to beat LOL!

This year I didn't attend the Long Island one and won't be able to make the NYC one, but I'll be having my own little "pride" when I head over to Fire Island for a few nights for my birthday.

Drunken twinks telling me how fat I am, overpriced drinks, and massive crowds. What are we supposed to be proud of again?

Very much mine. OK, maybe not item (2) so much, but otherwise, fun times.

Just... Pride is a poor way to accomplish any of those.

I just flew back home this afternoon. I spent the last eight days in San Francisco with my partner and two of our close friends who are also a couple. We rented an apartment near Castro and Market and had a great time not just doing pride things but exploring the city in general. Coming from a much smaller city SF Pride was a great time. Of course people complain about the drugs and over drinking which are common. But for me I don't do drugs and despite being bartender I don't personally drink that much and never had more than two drinks a night during the entire week, but I still had a lot of fun going out, socializing, meeting people and dancing.

Our own city has Pride in July (because so many people from here travel to go to Pride in other cities, often Toronto) so years ago the Pride committee here decided to move our celebration to July in-order to get better attendance levels.

Helsinki Pride this week, the beginning looks pretty official: opened by the Minister of Culture and Sports, the Mayor of Helsinki declared the "Pride Peace". I will check out some cultural events, a couple of beers later this week.

More peaceful here, except the alcohol part but that happens every weekend... To avoid the twinks I'll go the "Stroke" club on Friday, can't get in if you are under 24y old

Happy Pride everyone!!! Hope y'all have a fun filled month with the perfect weather and all.

Has anyone been to Pride in Sao Paulo? Heard that one's huge.

Count me in that group. The hubby and I have considered driving down to Charleston for their celebration next month. But it's quite a bit more tame and small scale.

Haven't ever been to any of the Pride parades here, and last Saturday's one here went well, as they usually do, apparently. Just not interested, although if I was in the city at the time I would go out of my way to have a look and take some pics.

Over the years I've accidentally found myself in a number of cities where Pride marches were taking place and they were usually good fun, although they weren't without their negative aspects. One in Manchester over a decade ago I remember purely for the massive gold-foil covered penises on a float. All I could do was roll my eyes to heaven and wonder what parents of kids watching would think. It was 3pm on a Saturday afternoon.

Another one in Paris I remember for the sauna float. There were guys in shorts in a huge bath throwing buckets of water at the crowds, which didn't go down to well with the elderly straight couple beside us who got drenched as it passed.

And in a Sydney Mardi Gras I remember a float for a S&M bar with a guy in a sling, wearing just a harness, with another guy mimicking what one usually does to someone in that situation.

I would have no objection to any or all of the above, but there's a time and place for everything. Again in Sydney, I was walking around one Saturday afternoon when preparations were being made for the parade later that day. I was crossing the road behind three builders and one mentioned Mardi Gras. One of the others replied "They're all f*****-up on drugs and full of Aids mate".

You'd wonder if we're progressing at all . . .

A lot of the queens here have been pretty hard on him for not being out, so I thought many of you would rejoice and dance for joy in the streets!

Now you can all sit and wait for Tom, John and Brad to pop out.

Birmingham rang in our Pride just a few weeks ago... Over-all it was the same as the previous two pride's I've attended... Same entertainment venues... Same sponsors.. Same faces... Even the anti-gay protesters were carrying the exact same signs!

I guess for a conservative city in a very conservative state with a small gay population, it wasn't too bad..
