Hypocrisy At Its Best?

Thu Jun 28, 2012 8:39 pm

Today I was assigned to work on a rather luxurious cruise ship which is doing 12 night mediterranean cruises, I was at the gangway checking the guests cruise cards. When this character shows up, none other than Mr Alejandro Cao de Benos, for those who don´t know him, he is Spanish born (from an aristocratic family) but he is the only foreigner working for the government of North Korea, you can find him on youtube videos proclaiming how wonderful and what a worker´s paradise North Korea is and Kim Jong Il this, Juche that, USA evil, etc.

As soon as I saw him I knew he looked familiar to me, and when I checked his card and saw his name I almost had to contain my laughter.

So we have this dude talking about capitalism, US imperialism, the cause of all the world problems and yet he is boarding a luxurious ship (from a very well known American company) to go enjoy himself on a Med cruise, yet back in Pyongyang people do not have the freedom to travel between cities, let alone out of the country and even less so to freely book such capitalist pleasures as a cruise vacation.

Your thoughts?

Doesn't sound different from the hypocrisy of all the NK leadership, there is nothing socialist/communist about unelected leaders, a ruling family and a political elite living lavishly while the rest of the population starves.

Reminds me of the head of the communist party in Greece, always so vocal against capitalism, the west and the US, yet her two daughters attended private (and American) schools in Athens and both studied in the United States. Practice what you preach is something unheard to all of them.

That is how it always works. Those in power have access to a wealth of benefits and this will be no different.

I had to smile at this as I have been looking for some really good deals on a Med cruise and the 12 day cruises, especially the Venice to Barcelona route - or the reverse, which you seem to be working. Hopefully there will be some good sale prices we can grab.

I just have one word for him: Gilipollas.

I bet his family was supporting Franco back in the 1950s-60s.

How it works. A smaller example would be a well known attorney down here in Miami. Guy has written books and is a sucessful attorney, not really sure why when I've seen him he wasn't so great. Anyway he is worth lots of money but he has openly supported communism in Cuba and his wife says she is a communist. It's easy to say that when you have millions of dollars and live a nice luxurious free life.

I think it's like that a lot with cases like this.

I doubt this guy actually believes what he says. It is just his job. Think of it as a long-term paid acting gig.

An integral part of being a despot is living a life significantly more lavish than those who you rule over.

Exactly. It must be pretty fun though. I'd love to spend my days writing ridiculous speeches proclaiming the apparent awesomeness of the 'dear leader' (did you know that he invented the internet and that in his first game of golf he scored 11 under par?). Does this guy get paid for it?

Same happens in Venezuela with Chavez, he´s always attacking the evil US imperialists, the CIA is plotting to kill him, Bush is a drunkard, etc, yet a big part of his family is living in Florida attending Universities and living it large.

oh and he uses a Blackberry and has a Tweeter account...

Venice to Barcelona is being done by the Carnival Breeze, Solstice and i think the Mariner of the Seas ( a bit of a oxymoron name that ship has, I mean, what else can you be a Mariner of? )

Solstice would be my pick

My thinking is that it was inappropriate for you to identify a guest of your employer, particularly on the same day that he boarded.

I suggest you be more discrete in your future postings or else you might be looking for a new job.

I disagree. Putting principle over profit can be a good idea and it is one in this case. Hypocrites like this man need to be exposed.

Thank you Ronglimeng, at least you were more polite in bringing your point, unlike another member who just accused me and came around with an attitude (those posts where deleted on my request)

As I wrote on a deleted comment, I did not sign a contract and let alone a privacy disclaimer, so I am free to name, point and shame as I please, honestly if I have seen a big celebrity I would not have mentioned it, I don´t care what they do on their spare time, but this is different, here we have a man who praises a criminal and oppresive regime on one side and on the other goes around indulging on a lavish lifestyle.

Exactly my point, thank you aloges   and I really wished this Cruise company knew who he was, if I was the Captain of that ship I would have denied him boarding.

Agreed - If I did the same at work I would be fired for sure.

the world is full of hypocrites. He is just one of many who compromises themselves every day at work in order to get paid. Hell if I was paid the right price (it'd have to be a gigantic sum)by a dictator I'd do the same.

Anyway congratulations on working on a cruise ship. When I was 12 that was my dream!

What's it like working on those cruise ships? I heard people can make around 10 to 15 grand on a contract for a couple of months.
Also, most of the time, workers are on a 16 hour day schedule, with no contact with guests on any free time.
Is that true???

Well if you wiki the name of this guy, it states that it was his dream, pretty cool to play Commies and then come back to your lavish life back home.

Well, I don´t actually work on the ship itself, I work for a company who does the port services.

Not really ¨A couple¨ of months, they work for 6 months, some work for longer! from what I have gathered from a few crews.

That depends on your position, I see crews disembarking and going into town, but again it depends on the job you have onboard, and yes you do work really long hours.

From what I heard from a few crews I asked, the life onboard is OK, lots of work but overall OK and good enough money, just choose the company you want to work for carefully

I was also considering it, but just found another job.

If you care to dismount from your pedestal for a moment, please consider the following:

1) The OP did not name his employer, the ship the person in question boarded, or its intended destination.
2) Cao is paid by a dictatorship to be a public figure. Disussing a public figure's lifestyle is not unreasonable, and it certainly wouldn't be a first on this forum.
