What Killed Arafat?

Tests hint at possible Arafat poisoning

Nine-month investigation by Al Jazeera discovers rare, radioactive polonium on ex-Palestinian leader's final belongings.

I know there is a lot of circumstantial / anecdotal evidence supporting the idea that Arafat was poisoned. Will be interesting to see what Al Jazeera come up with.

What has DocLightning got against Arafat? Not a brilliant leader but not nearly as much blood on his hands as successive smash-and-grab Israeli regimes. Not even close.

I would think: not well. If this is true, I hope it was Israel that did it - at least then they'd deserve the crap that's going to come their way.

Oh boy, here we go.

In the (probably futile) interest of heading this off before it gets out of hand, arguing over whether Israel or Palestine has the moral high ground here is useless and stupid. NOBODY has it. The high ground is sitting empty, waiting to be claimed, but to date nobody has proven themselves worthy of holding it. And until somebody does manage to remove the proverbial sword from the stone and stop screwing the other side around, this discussion will continue to be, in the words of South Park, an argument over the merits of a giant douche vs. those of a turd sandwich.

Of course the Israelis will say Arafat was poisoned by those with competing groups and leaders among the Palestinians. The Palestinians and the Arab/Isamic world will blame the Mossad. I believe Arafat was in his 70's when he died, so natural causes wouldn't be unusual. This just may be a bunch of rumors by those trying to vie for power of the Palestinians or to bash the Israel.

I doubt the Israelis would have poisoned Arafat. They had no motive for wanting him to be killed. He was probably one of the worst leaders and worst negotiators that the Palestinians have ever seen.

I've read a lot of your postings and am genuinely surprised you would want to see a whole nation full of civilians have "crap" headed their way. Why?

That's fair. But at the same time, it's also short-sighted to assume that most of the folks who live there are as militant in their outlook (over arab/israeli issues) as we are. They're not all bad, you know (though I do take the stance of "the less religious, the better")...

I don't want to see that at all. But let's be honest: I will be very surprised if it doesn't happen (and pleasantly surprised at that). Because that's how things go over there. And if Israel is going to get struck, I'd rather it be for something they actually did rather than something people just think they did.

Of course not everyone over there is militant. In fact, I'd say that the militant people are firmly in the minority. My point was only that it's of no use whatsoever getting into a match of "X isn't as bad as Y", because there is no winning there.

The guy was pretty much on his death bed at the time, and was losing support. If Israel wanted him out of the picture, they would have cooked his compound in broad daylight. It wouldn't have made the situation worse from what it already was at that point in time.

That's the most pathetic excuse I've seen on here yet.

Well, what surprises me here is how long it took to reach such a conclusion. Come on, Arafat died almost eight years ago.
