Does Anyone Still Eat At Pizza Hut?

Wed Jul 04, 2012 1:30 am

Hi!

Today while I was driving back from a short break in France with my brother I started thinking of this Adam Sandler film I've been watching recently where he takes these kids to Pizza Hut at one point. It really put me in the mood of going to one but the one in my local town here in the UK has closed down. Are they still doing well? Do their pizzas still taste nice? Do they still do that salad bar where you fill that tub until it's way overfilled with a ton of potato salad and other stuff! Maybe it just tastes better when you're a kid but as a kid we definitely had some good times in my family going to get Pizza Hut to bring home!

So anyone still go to Pizza Hut? Can I come along next time please!

Many thanks,

Pierre

I don't know about Europe but Pizza Hut is still alive and doing well (and probably my favorite chain pizza, although Domino's is pretty good since they changed their recipe) here in the US.

When I was a kid, we used to go to Pizza Hut maybe once a month or so. They had some deal with schools, where if you read a book (or a certain number of books, or something), you'd get a free pan pizza.

In the last 15 years, I've only gotten delivery from Pizza Hut. In fact, I have no idea if they even still have sit-down restaurants; all the ones near where I live are just delivery locations, far as I know.

I liked the pizza when I was a kid, but compared to local pizza shops, Pizza Hut is far worse. A big pile of grease with some bread, cheese, and sauce thrown in.

With that said, I still do order it now and then. Sometimes you just feel like eating a big pile of grease...!

Pizza Hut is DISGUSTING! It's the McDonald's of pizza chains. Except McDonald's is tolerable on occasion.

I enjoyed Pizza Hut when I was a kid, back when the local Pizza Hut in my hometown was more like a pizza parlor. Now it's a fast food chain and I cannot stress enough how awful it is. My brother loves it and we argue about this every time the topic of pizza comes up.

I think they do have sit down restaurants, and I think we're both out of their demographic. In college I used to go to them or order from them fairly often. Once I graduated I bought more from Little Caesars, now that I am a "professional" I spend probably 2-3 times more on a pizza then I would from Pizza Hut and get a decent pie from a local restaurant.

To be honest, frozen pizzas have caught up with Pizza Hut. I'd buy a Digerno or whatever they call it pizza before that. CostCo take and bake pizzas go for $9 and are twice the size of Pizza Huts too.

I eat there every so often. Prefer the base from pizza hut but Domino's toppings. No idea why

I quite like the free unlimited salad they give you with your food although It is an expensive eat out though for what it is. Dominos, however, if you get 2 pizzas and 2 sides it can come to 60 (yes, SIXTY) quid if not more.

I actually like Pizza Hut thin crust pizza and I'd ordered it on a bi-weekly basis for a long time. Much better than Dominos, Papa Johns, etc.

Now that I live in rural Alaska I'd actually pay a great deal for pretty much any type of pizza.

Indeed - I just looked now, if you want 2 14 inch pizzas, garlic bread and 2 1.25l cokes, it's 46 quid. The pizzas are 20 quid EACH.

It's a lot for pizza (and greasy pizza at that - 170 cals a slice) and I could easily get the same from a local takeaway (which isn't exactly good for you either anyway) and pay half that. My local dominos is a takeout/delivery only store with a pizza hut next door, and dominos are very often caught sticking their promo stickers and leaflets on pizza hut's door.

They do... There's at least 2 in my city. Haven't been to either in a few months, but both parking lots are almost always full when I drive by.

There's also one of the delivery/take out only ones close to my house. That one is fairly busy as well.

I went last year after not going for many years and it was awful. It has gone very downmarket and the pizzas aren't THAT good. I think Pizza Express have given them a run for their money, not to mention the abundance of high quality pizzas that you can now cook at home. I always feel that Pizza Hut cater primarily for children and the lower end of the market.

Me too. I think of the takeaway pizza chains, Pizza Hut's thin crust pizza is the best of the lot. It is certainly better than Domino's, in my opinion.

You must have been to the McDonalds on Virginia Ave. (ATL) Except that one is rarely tolerable! There is also a Pizza Slut on Virginia Ave. I think it was cleaned sometime back in the early 1980's.There was a fire back in the 1990's that shut it down for a while. Most of the surviving cockroaches moved over to the Flying Pig. I think the dirt/grease combination is the only thing holding the building up at this point.

I know what you mean. I think it is because there are so many Americans who have never tasted "good" American Pizza such as can be obtained in places like New York or Chicago. Personally, There is no pizza quite like what I can get in New York. It just has a certain taste to it I can't find anywhere else.

When I was brought up in London we used to go once every few months and it was a treat. When I go to see my Mum in London sometimes we still go but its maybe twice a year.

We have Pizza Hut in Dublin and I have been a few times over the last year for lunch with a mate . I still enjoy it but not that often .

When I do go its Garlic bread and cheese. Then I get a Super Supreme deep pan with pineapple and black olives.

There's a Pizza Hut in my hometown. Its a fairly new building thats actually nice to sit down in. I usually have them deliver as I am usually to busy to go in and sit down. There is a local mom and pop place but they dont deliver so I go with Pizza Hut more often than not. Pizza Hut does have its share of grease, however all the Dominoes in my state seem like they're twice as greasy, so I go with Pizza Hut.

Pizza Hut is somewhat isolated in PR. There are as many sit-in restaurants as there are carry out/delivery only restaurants. Lately I've been meaning to eat healthier so I rarely eat at Pizza Hut (about 2-3 times/year). However, I'd never miss out if invited.

I was just in a Pizza Hut restaurant this past Saturday here in northern NJ. I don't think I had been in a sit-down for a number or years or even take-out for at least a year.Their pizza is ok, and with coupons it can be a good value but in Northern NJ there are many good family run pizza places with better quality and fair pricing I would chose first. Pizza Hut, along with other chains, may be the only places to get anywere a decent pizza away from major cities with significant Italian-American populations and where few independent, family run pizza places. Unfortunately US style pizza has become a generic fast food in many places of so-so quality.

Throughout the USA, Pizza Hut has closed down some sit-down restaurants over the years and opened up many 'express' locations in malls and take-out/delivery locations. They still advertise nationally on TV and radio, often have coupons in the newspapers and ad fliers you get in the mail, so they must have enough customers.

Growing up in the 1990s, Pizza Hut was THE pizza place. To this day, I measure all pizzas against the ones made by PH. I loved their salad bars, their family-oriented vibe, and their consistent quality. In recent years however I do admittedly eat there less often, not because I think they're 'less-cool' or 'past-it', but because PH outlets haven't increased the number of outlets they have, especially when compared with Chilli's or McDonald's.
Last week I was walking in Dubai with my family when we noticed a Pizza Hut restaurant filled to the brim; in fact, there were so many that even the outside area was more or less full (and inside is a 2-floor restaurant), unusual for Dubai in the summer. Brought back so many memories.
In Egypt they need to expand more. The latest batch of malls/trendy recreational areas do not seem to have any Pizza Huts that I can think of. PH seems to be focusing on the home delivery segment more, even here. Perhaps it's profitable, and PH ads do continue to appear in the media, but I do feel like they've been somehow eclipsed by other eateries.

Ever since the Domino's down the street from me closed several years ago, the only pizza place that delivers to my area is Pizza Hut (Papa John's claims that there is one that delivers to my area, but I'm sure that if I tried to order from the, they'd say they don't deliver to my area.). That being said, if I'm going to go out for pizza, I drive to the Little Caesar's in the shopping center at the entrance to my neighborhood.

I normally buy a cheap frozen pizza at the store and doctor it up with my own ingredients.

Pizza Hut is vile. Dominoes is only a little less vile. Papa John's is the poster child for vileness.

But, I grew up in NY and subscribe to the notion that pizza is like sex...it's all good (even the vile stuff), just varying levels of good.

Here in the Greater Pizza Eating land, aka Toronto, Pizza Hut seems to be hanging on by the skin of it's teeth...
They are more expensive than almost all the other delivery chains, and don't run nearly as many promos as they used to to keep people looking at them.

They do have the decently priced lunch buffet if you just want a quick pizza lunch and are close to a sit down Pizza Hut.

Honeslty though vs Canada's own Pizza Pizza and Pizzaville, the US chains like Domino's and the local places (Dozens of them in Toronto area) I don't know how they stay in business.

Many thanks for the replies. Was interesting to read. It's good to see that they're still doing well in some countries and places. Maybe I just think that they're struggling in the UK because I haven't been in one for so long.

I like Pizza Hut. Not my first option when I want to eat pizza, actually it only goes when I want Pizza Hut, even because some of their food look more like a pizza pie than a real pizza.
Here in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Pizza Hut has downsized, but you'll still find some restaurants spread throughout the city.
There is one at GRU also.
With so many Italian immigrants here, I believe they can even get offended if you call the food sold at Pizza Hut a pizza.

It's workmanlike pizza, decent value if you have a coupon (and coupons are ubiquitous around here).

These days, I tend to buy principally from locally-owned places, to suppo small business and (of course) for quality and variety.

Still, a well-run Pizza Hut will provide a decent product at a fair price. Hard to fault that.

They're still alive and well here in Indonesia.
Pizza Hut started their own specialist home delivery PHD... But people still prefer to eat at Pizza Hut or call them up for delivery.

Domino's having a resurgence here...

Why Pizza Hut is still popular here? Cheese ain't cheap here... and home made pizzas turn up to be quite expensive ! Yeah pepperoni is not cheap here either... In the end, want a pizza? It's cheaper to call Pizza hut for delivery. Their localized menu is doing reasonably well... and the salad bar is still popular as ever (salads aren't cheap here if you want have it at home for yourself).

When I go to a city here where there is no good food, well, Pizza Hut is a refuge away from "threat of diorrhea"...    The quality variance of KFC and McD here is too great to risk, so Pizza Hut wins for me outside Java & Bali if I'm on a long stay/deployment somewhere.

Quoting rfields5421 (Reply 23):
In Southeast Asia and Singapore, Pizza Hut spend a few million dollars developing a system to keep pizza warm on delivery motorcycles. That is how the business has changed over the decades.

LOL! Yeah! Not bad, I had a pizza delivered LATE (but with prior notification by them due to the heavy traffic in Jakarta), and when it arrived here, it wasn't warm, it was still HOT!

Quoting rfields5421 (Reply 23):
The bigger issue in the US is that the 'Chicken on a Bone' as a meal is dying out. And it is in many European countries. Young people want their chicken processed and served in a 'nugget' format.

Nuggets aren't as popular as chicken on a bone here, to the extent that McDonalds had to defend its market against KFC by offering "chicken on a bone"...

Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 28):
So they treat them this badly everywhere?

The chicken you buy from your local supermarket, treats their chicken the same as KFC.

(And Pizza Hut TV advert is on while I'm writing this! Grrr!)

I find their pan pizzas to be delicious, most of the time. Much better than dominos or papa johns. Their regular and thin crust is about on par with Papa Johns, but still better than dominos.

Ive found particularly in the area I live Pizza Hut has ditched their town centre stores to open up take away only stores and then focused on out of town retail park outlets which offer eating in facilities.
I used to like Pizza Hut however my most recent experiences of poor quality ingredients, cutbacks on toppings and terrible customer service has lead me to the slightly more expensive but much nicer Dominos.

Of course the best pizza I have ever had was in Chicago, but that is a different topic all together.

My second job is delivering Pizzas for the Hut. They're doing well, though they've slashed wages for the employees and hiked delivery fees. So people aren't really tipping delivery drivers anymore...which means most nights tips don't even bring us up to minimum wage, forcing the restaurant to compensate the difference.

Always tip your delivery driver! They depend on your tips!

As for the food. The pizzas often make me sick with all the grease they contain. I prefer Dominoes over Pizza Hut, actually. Pizza Hut does have some interesting products though that are delicious, like the new P'Zolos, they're delicious, and P'Zones are my favorite item on the menu (calzones).

They make a mean BBQ chicken pizza too.

If it's free, it's fine with me; otherwise as Nancy Reagan said back in the 80's, I just say no! Amazing how in pizza towns like Chicago and NYC Pizza Hut and those other cardboard chains survive. See the favorite pizza thread on this forum.

I'll put it to you this way; back in the day when I was a kid (and therefore had no say in the matter) when I was taken to Pizza Hut for sit-down meals, I'd eat their spaghetti. And even THAT was barely passable.

I am confused why people are saying that it is £60 for a full meal for a few people from Domino's/Pizza Hut. There is coupons against it and deals on all the time. It is definitely not cheap even with the money off - even half price. I'd rather have better Chinese or Indian food for less or even go to the chippy and one £2 portion of chips lasts for an entire day (Persian people who run takeaways in the UK seem to always serve ridiculously huge protions) and even cod only costs £3... For one large pizza you could get enough food for 3 people for an entire day!

For all you PH fans there is an actual PH buffet during lunch hours in ATL on Virginia Ave. It is possible to eat and eat until you have to be removed by ambulance. It is the equivalent of being drunk by pizza but it's so good. Total cost about $6.50 plus $1 tip. There is no salad bar but who goes to PH for salad?

I'll occasionally get a craving for Pizza Hut. Not just pizza, but a Pizza Hut pan pizza.

I find their pan pizzas to be delicious, most of the time

Being from Chicago and now living in Houston Pizza Hut seems to be the only place I can order a pan deep dish style pizza from. I have found it is best when you tell them "light on the sauce" when ordering. Southern tastes around here prefer the cracker style paper thin crust.

Unlike Chicago I don't know of any pizza parlors here like you have in Chicago or New York. Thee used to be Bierraporetti's but they seem to have vanished. Star pizza is ok but I'm way up on the north side in The Woodlands.

My very first job when I turned 16 was working in a Pizza Hut, the very first one to open in Chicago to be exact. It had full sit down dining with red checked tablecloths on the tables and served beer. I have not seen a Pizza Hut like that in years and years. All the ones we have here are just a store front where you order for takeaway. Back then Pizza Hut was still owned by the guys who started it in Wichita, KS. Since then it has been owned by Pepsi for many years and now Yum Brands. Yum also owns KFC & Taco Bell.

Yeah why not? I am brought a cup of water by my choice and told to go help myself to the buffet. Payment is made at the cash register and that is mostly the only interaction with the waitstaff who is also collecting lots of tips during this busy time. Due to the buffet it is a help yourself environment and tip is paid on checkout. It's not like I'm sitting at Fogo de Chau. Thanks for judging me anyway. $1 dollar tip on a $6.50 buffet is what percentage of the bill with minimal interaction?

One of my first jobs also was at PH when I was 17. I worked at the PH in Watauga, TX on Denton Highway with my high school friends. My manager was the oldest sister of my best friend. When times were slow we played Pac-man, Asteroids and other games in the lobby. I will never forget making an order for a large thin crust with triple green peppers only. We too had the checkered table cloths. 1981 was a happy year!!!

I had pizza hut twice in France recently. Apart from anything else it was open on sundays when everything else was shut and was cheap for pizza + dessert + salad bar. I thought it was actually pretty good. back home they only do takeaways now and dominoes are cheaper, closer to home and better so I don't use them.

I used to love going to Pizza Hut as a kid for their salad bar. But it seems like that free standing Pizza Hut locations are becoming fewer and fewer and more and more small retail counters are opening up.

I love Pizza Hut--but I usually order their WingStreet brand, bone-out wings, Honey BBQ or Spicy BBQ. Their pizzas are still pretty good. They still have sit-down locations, I try to go to one every Wednesday for their $0.50 wing days. It costs $7 for 14 bone-out wings!

There is one free standing Pizza Hut I know of in Houston. It's on I45 North and is on the edge of Gunspoint. They used to have a lunch pizza/salad buffet for lunch but they discontinued that about 8 years ago or so.
The location I buy from in The Woodlands is one of the Express locations. The manager & staff seem pretty friendly and attuned to customer service. We'll see where Yum brands takes them.

I don't know of any Pizza Huts here anymore.

Our 3 main pizza chains are Debonairs, Pizza Perfect and Scooters

http://www.debonairspizza.co.za/
http://www.scooterspizza.co.za/index.html
http://www.pizzaperfect.co.za/

I see comments about pizza costing 20 quid, that is R 255.45 in our money, if you look at the prices on the websites you will see that 20 quid gets you quite a bit!

One of the better pizzas I've had (deep dish kind, not New York style), and certainly the best Pizza Hut, was in Greenwich, London. Have no idea if it's still there, or even exactly where it was. We sort of ran into it and were craving something not-British at the moment. I suppose it was British, by default. Pizza differs by local traditions.

Pizza Huts are frequent enough in northern New Jersey. What I wish we still had in abundance was Shakey's Pizza.
