Crazy Things From Your Childhood

Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:44 am

I've been wasting away the last hour looking around Youtube, and I came across this gem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGfmvh4kxkI

Here's part one, should you wish to subject yourself to hell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di36AjqqMs4

As one youtube commenter so aptly stated, "i was soo sad when my parents threw away the video now i know why......" Talk about a trippy video. Talk about some patient parents, too. I remember when our copy of this video suddenly disappeared. I enjoyed the video quite a bit almost 20 years ago. I don't doubt my mom burned it and mailed the ashes back to the studio that produced it, along with a nasty letter.

Anybody else have anything they'd like to share from their childhood? Memories of anything that now you look back on and wonder what in the name of all things good and holy you were thinking?
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.

Getting up very early every morning to watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLCg1kb1sA0

There was another Nickelodeon (Disney?) show in kids sang, danced & acted out to a song that went something like "I'm an elephant too, I can do what the other elephants do, I can pull my ears, wave my trunk, and do what the other elephants do." I use to love that show. Sadly, I can't find it on Youtube (or even recall the name, lyrics are from memory).

I am not surprised. that video is full of WTF.

For me, when I was a kid, I had similar fears/nervousness as other kids, but for radically different reasons:

I hated singing during church (catholic school) because I was afraid the music ministry would ask me to join them because of my singing voice.

I was originally nervous doing a reading during mass not because of stage fright but because of a fear of men wearing dresses (or whatever that robe thing is) -- turns out there, I think I had a reasonable excuse to have a fear    (don't worry none of the priests at my church were like that)

I preferred sitting in the left side of the car because that's where the driving side is (i always wanted to drive)

I became a fan of Dale Earnhardt because his number was the same as my bus route as a kid (3) (where I lived a lot of us identified ourselves based on what bus we rode)

I was a weird kid. Still am

Any Canadian children who grew up in the late 80s or early 90s will remember this.

How about this show from the US? I remember hearing this when I was about 7-8.

I wonder what kids would think today if something like that came on TV.
Hard to believe that Disco Duck performed on the same stage as Kiss, David Bowie, AC/DC, Wolfman Jack, Richard Pryor, Steely Dan, Flip Wilson, Barry White, Heart, The Village People, Steven Martin and other greats.

Awww I loved Take Part! Brings me right back to my childhood.

Now for my contribution... Another nightmare inducing gem from Canada.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REGsa2S2pCk

This, my friends, is a show called "Size Small." First, we start by meeting Miss Helen in her creepy face shaped house, who seems as though she has had way too many happy pills. Note that through the window behind her, there doesn't seem to be an inside to the house, just a black abyss. We then meet the rest of the cast, a boy named Oliver and several puppets. And the show begins! We start off with a disturbing sing-song, involving the return of Oliver's disembodied head in the black abyss surrounded by white gloved hands, with no apparent owners.

But what happens next remains to be some of the greatest nightmare fuel I have ever experienced. Friend Record. Good lord, that thing haunted my dreams when I was a small child, and still continues to on occasion. Something about how it can't keep rhythm, the unnatural movements, the all-round creepy appearance... You can't get worse than that.

But wait, I've got one more for you! Also hauled from the depths of early '90s Canadian children's programming..

Am I the only one who remembers "Kids Can Rock and Roll?"

Hi!

When we were kids we used to play this game called "Murder in the dark". I don't remember exactly what happened in it but I think it involved pieces of paper with names written on it and darkness and everyone jumping on top of one of us at the end! That was pretty weird but a lot of fun when you're 7!

Many thanks.

Watching japanese monster movies as a kid in the 70s with my brother pointing a water gun at the tv to keep me quiet because I actually thought the monsters were trapped inside the tv and if the screen was hit by water it would melt and the monster would come out of the tv and eat us.

Listening to my 8 track tapes of things like the allman brothers and black sabbath. One way out and Paranoia were my two favorite songs as a kid. I could listen to those songs over and over again. When I listened to One Way Out i always had a mental image of me and my best friend at the time Richard riding on a ski lift up through the fires of hell.

Listening to my Singing Multiplication Tables records.

My favorite cringe worthy memory was of me in the tub and suddenly realizing i couldn't find the shampoo. Rather than try to look all over the house for it, because at 8 years old i had no concept that things were always stored in the same place, i got out of the tub naked and wet and walked out the front door to my mother who was standing in the middle of the street talking to a neighbor. I can only imagine the look on the neighbor's face to see this naked child coming down the walk. I then tugged on mom's arm to ask her where the shampoo was. I seem to recall my mother was pretty taken aback that I was standing in the middle of the street naked.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

The era I grew up in might not quite match "Disco Duck", but I have to say that Bill Nye the Science Guy changed my life. That show got me into science like never before and I remain so to this day.

Nice!
The 8tracks we had as a kid was Saturday Night Fever, Chaka Khan and Loggins & Massina.
The 'lodies' down the street that drove Trans Ams had listened to Black Sabbath.

Haha!
Disco Duck was my early childhood. My later childhood (11-12) was in the early-mid 80s. By then we had Mr. T being a positive role model for the kids. Check out this video and movie he made. At the time, I felt I was already too old for this kids stuff but now in my 30s, I find this so comical and amusing. I picked up a used LP of this for free at a record store a few years ago. I would eventually buy a new old stock VHS tape of this on Ebay.
Come to find out, I went to middle school with 2 actors in this movie.

Then what's even more outrageous is Mr. T's follow up album.  Wow!

Ahh, nothing wrong with a little nudity when you are young and naive.

In my day, it was a well-stocked public library that made the difference, created by the local oligarch and funded by the taxpayers.

I was from the Bill Cosby "Fat Albert" era. That Cosby was one whacked out dude!

Can you imagine today having a cast of characters called "Cluck, Bill, Rudy, Dumb Donald, Mushmouth, Fat Albert, Bucky, Russell, and Weird Harold"?

Same era for me. We actually got up early on Saturday, as that was the only day cartoons were on.

I miss the candy cigarettes, Jarts, and those cool red and clear water powered rockets that you pumped up with air to launch.

Yep, from earlier postings it seems we are of the same era.

It's interesting how many shows were based on the kids having a band.

The Junkyard Gang had a band, so did the Archies, the kids on Scoobie Doo, etc etc etc.

I guess it was an early tie-in to marketing: they saw how the Monkees could sell records, so they wanted to cash in too.

Then there was "Schoolhouse Rock!"...

In that era, kids were more or less expected to take up a musical instrument.

No surprise I took up one of the least cool possible instruments...

Yep, and you added water so it would shoot out the bottom.

I remember my uncle letting us put beer in instead - man did that rocket take off!

We kept asking for more, but he decided he'd prefer to drink the beer instead!

LOL, I remember getting beers for my dad and his friends when they were over--I would get them for a price, a sip of each one. Just had to make sure I threw the tab away so nobody would step on them. Or we would save them and make chains from the tabs.

I also remember those helicopter toys Vertibirds. I had this one:

Was SOOO cool.

Here is another show I remember from my 11-14 year old days.

Video and Arcade Top 10:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulOBXIiywl8

My grade 6 or 7 teacher knew a producer of this show and got our whole class on it. I remember coming in on a weekend and we all took a bus to the studio in Mississauga. They taped about 8 episodes that day. To this day I distinctly remember meeting "Nick Picholas" who is now a radio DJ in Buffalo, NY. He walked into the green room which was catered by KFC and exclaimed "I have to hold my nose otherwise I'll end up eating everything here". He was quite a large guy so I don't doubt him!
