Why Are Blonde People Considered Better Looking?

Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:37 am

I was lying awake last night wondering why blonde haired, blue eyed people are considered "special" in some way, or better looking. I know it's hard to generalise about it because you can get ugly blonde people as you can dark haired, but overall, blonde haired people with blue eyed are seen to be special.
What are your thoughts? Do you have a preference? Are you blonde? Do you think you're treated specially/ differently because of it? Thanks

I am not a huge blonde fan but I get the attraction. Blonde hair has a light, shiny clean look to it.

The blue eyes thing I think is attractive, because very pure blue eyes look almost unnatural/mysterious, (not too many occurences of blue coloured things appearing in nature, especially on mammals). Deep brown eyes have a simlar effect on me.

Add me to it. Black is also nice. Light blonde looks fine to me, beautiful, but when looking for a girlfriend I prefer darker hair, darker skin. I dont like untanned white skin. And certainly blue eyes are special, but sometimes it borders to being scary.

Same.

Reason why blondes may be seen that way is because over 95% (personal estimate) of the world's population is not blonde.

I actually prefer light skin, not suntanned skin, but very dark hair (almost pitch black) and blue/green eyes.

For a Scandinavian, I have very dark hair, but with a blonde tint.. and green eyes.. very happy with my eye colour..

I'd say it's mostly true for women, and it works on me. A blonde haired woman in my field of vision just gets my attention. Maybe also because my first two girlfriends were blonde.

As a kid I had blonde hair and blue eyes myself, and got some remarks about it, but of course as a kid you don't care. I remember loving my hair, especially in the summer when it got almost white. My hair then got darker and my eyes greyer, not that attractive. And I can never pull off the 3 days beard because it's not dark enough.

I had read some time ago what 1 in 11 Caucasians are blonde. Given that statistic (however true it may be) I would say that it is the rarity of the feature that makes it attractive. People want what's unique.

Quoting raffik (Thread starter):

Nope. You can find equally attractive people of every hair colour, every eye colour, every ethnicity, etc..

Of all the girls I've dated, most have been blonde, but I think that has just been by chance.....or maybe I sub-conciously love blondes. Who knows

There seem to be cultural differences here.
In Finland blond people, dark blonds especially, are so common it's often seen kind of boring hair color. Thick dark/black hair and deep brown eyes are rare among ethnic Finns and many find them cool.

I think blonde hair is special. But red heads / gingers are top of the list.

I prefer the dark hair/fair skin look personally.

Yet the majority of my girlfriends (and now my wife) have been in the blonde/dirty blonde range.

And my only regret is no 'gingers' at all.

I think it's the image we've been sold as to what is attractive. It's just like why was there a time when white people got all rights and colored people got second class citizenship. People wanted to be as white as possible and that meant white skin and not-brown eyes.

Blondes are cute, I have to admit. If she has blue or green eyes, I'd find her attractive. Of course, Asians are my preferred ethnicity followed by Middle Easterns (as far east as India and as far west as Northern Africa. I find Asians hotter than Western girls. And if I ever find a girl like this...   Something about colored skin and clear eyes that I find haunting yet attractive.

So it's all a matter of perspective.

It's a myth, at least in the US. There was a study several years ago among straight white men and it found they preferred women with dark hair over blondes (with the exception of California, where there opposite was true).

You can count me as an honorary Californian (yuck!). I've dated brunettes, but my long term relationships have been exclusively with blondes.

Slightly off-topic, and I don't want to turn this into a political flame war, but has anyone noticed that a lot of Conservative women, especially Conservative Christian women, dye their hair blonde?

Jan Brewer
Paula White
Callista Gingrich
Ann Romney (is she natural?)
Nancy Eisenhart

Mind you, there are several notable exception. But I just notice that I don't seem to see the same blonde dye-jobs on the left side of the political spectrum. Dye-jobs, yes, but typically to conceal grey, rather than to change hair color. I have no idea what the significance is.

I don't think blondes are necessary considered more attractive per se. I think people in general have an attraction for someone that is different in someway from themselves. Considering there are so few blondes as a total percentage of world population, it comes down to a supply vs. demand issue. The scarcity in the number of blondes (supply) creates an unusually high demand for them.

Well, to be fair, they are recessive traits, so they are going to be pretty rare. That makes them exotic. The vast majority of the human population on Earth has brown hair and brown eyes.

I was reading something a few years back that said Blue Eyes are a mutation and were not around 3000 years ago. Myself and my children are all blond and blue eyed. Also is red hair also recessive so in the future would it also be more rare.

For me it's all about the eyes. I used to like blondes, but I really don't care about the hair color (as long as there is hair!), but I LOVE blue and green eyes.

I have been blessed with green eyes. Thank heavens!

Well, I wouldn't call them Nazis, but if there is a tendency of conservative christian women to dye their hairs blond, it could be seen as a (consciously or unconsciously?) effort to emphasize their (real or wanted) ethnicity.

(Also, because there could be a demand for blond women, by the majority of the conservative christian men.)

Most people's preferences are due to nurture, this includes two types of nurture:

1) societal expectations
2) subliminal

The first is very easy to explain and prove with another example: not even 100 years ago, the "tanned" appearance (by tanned I mean any skin with obvious sun-induced shading), was considered unrefined, lacking sophistication, and even repulsive in my parts. Today (at least in Argentina and I'm sure more so in "western" countries), it is considered "chic", attractive, and a symbol of health, vigor, and even wealth. I recall my grandmother's inimical bickering with my mother whenever she would take me to a picnic. She bewailed that she was being negligent for allowing me "into the sun", that my skin would be ruined; by "ruined", she meant I would get a permanent tan. She had already given up on my mother long before that. To her, "porcelain" skin as she called it was the standard of beauty.

But with the advent of faster modes of transportation (which at first were available only to the wealthy), people could more easily go to beautiful destinations and come back looking "radiant". In many countries, that look thus became associated with health and wealth, so tanned skin is seen by many as such an indication, while paleness indicates people who don't have the means to "get out and about".

Same with hair: in the 17-18th centuries, brunettes were much preffered, which is why in many paintings of the time you only see aristocratic women with jet dark hair. In the 19th and most of the 20th century, perhaps due to influences suffused into all of culture by the pervading racialist notions of the era (specifically European supremacism which even shaped the social and immigration policy of countries like the United States, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa, and of course we know what happened in Europe with the Jews and others), non-black hair became the standard of beauty. And as the opposite of that, blonde hair most of all (in reality antthing from light brown and on). This was because such hair colors were considered "uniquely" European, and used as arguments for the superiority of the White man. Since modern fashion culture and media emerged at this time, the trend was further cemented on magazines, television, etc.

I think now we are seeing a reversal again: women with naturally tanned skin and brunette hair are in vogue.

The second reason is more local and personal: people are attracted to what is "exotic". In countries where blonds abound, they seem to have a knack for brunettes. In countries where blonds are a rarity, they seem readily mesmerized when they meet one. It is the human nature of saying "yes" when "no", and "no" when "yes", which we have since we are little kids. We like going against the norm.

Well Hitler considered them special - so maybe if you grew up in Germany in the 1930s/40s you could have that pounded in your head.

I personally don't see anything that special about blonde women - I dated a few and they did nothing for me - I've been pretty much into dark haired Latinas (and not the ones that dye their hair blonde) for the past 10-15 years.
